San Jose’s WORST-CASE Scenarios For The 2025-26 Season | Worried About Goaltending Depth?

The San Jose Sharks face a potential perfect storm of setbacks this season. This episode explores three worst-case scenarios that could derail the Sharks’ progress.

Goaltending woes take center stage as we analyze the high-stakes gamble on Yaroslav Askarov. Will the young netminder live up to expectations, or could his struggles leave the Sharks exposed? The offensive drought that’s plagued San Jose in recent years comes under scrutiny next. Can Will Smith, William Eklund, and Michael Misa inject much-needed firepower, or will scoring remain elusive?

Defensive concerns round out the trifecta of potential pitfalls. We examine how newcomers like Dmitry Orlov and John Klingberg might impact the blue line. Could injuries or underperformance from these additions leave the Sharks vulnerable?

Tune in for an in-depth analysis of the challenges facing San Jose and how they could shape the team’s fortunes in the upcoming NHL season.

  1. Is the weight really all on Askerov's shoulders? We had Adin Hill who left the sharks and won the cup the next year so he obviously wasn't the problem. Then we got rid of Blackwood who was also a stud and took the Avalanche on a deep run in the playoffs. That's 2 All-Star goalies that our DEFENSE made bad. I think Mike Grier is brilliant brining in these veterans on the blue line. If Askerov can even be mediocre I really feel our blue line has the experience and our young hotshots on offense can catapult us up the standings.

  2. Heres something: the goaltender that allowed 25% of Celebrini's goals last season and 12.6% of his points has retired.

  3. So is Alex or jakub even able to just take some load off Askarov? Barring any injury. Just to give some relief with a minimum of confidence ??

  4. I like looking at all the possibilities that could occur this upcoming season. A good sobering look at what hopefully will not happen but we should be ready for all scenarios.

Funny how you mentioned you were already prepared for the defense to be bad so you worry less about it or are more prepared. lol!

Tomorrow sounds like it will feel good for sure. I land somewhere in the middle, but hope for your episode tomorrow as we all do.

The only thing you mentioned that really made me wince was about one or more of our young players having a season or career ending injury. Now that is something that would suck. Everything else is a one season setback.

Like you said, GMMG has ensured most all contracts are short term, so if a scenario plays out like you discussed, corrective actions can be taken and the team upgraded to an extent sooner rather than later.

  5. So let him (Askie) play this season and if he isn't the guy then you have this year to make another move before you truly compete for the playoffs next year

  6. I figure, worst case… plane crash, no survivors. Wipes out the whole team. In the first nine games, so future talent on exhibition is gone too.

Any performance on the ice, however poorly it could go, would be massively better than that.
