KASPER, EDVINSSON CONTRACTS & RED WINGS TRADE PROPOSALS ft. Max Bultman – Winged Wheel Podcast – 9/7

WWP NIGHT w/ the GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS TICKETS ON SALE NOW: griffinshockey.com/wwp

As the offseason begins to wind down, we’re back with another (remote) episode of the Winged Wheel Podcast ft. Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit to take advantage of the downtime!

We start by discussing the recent changes to the CBA, and how the NHL’s implementation plan on certain shifts can benefit Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings when it comes to extending Simon Edvinsson and Marco Kasper. Can Hockeytown’s core be solidified with more contracts like Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, and Lucas Raymond’s? We then discuss the earlier implementation of the Stanley Cup Playoffs salary cap and whether that means teams like Florida or Vegas would have to shed cap – could someone like Evan Rodrigues be on Steve Yzerman’s radar to add to McLellan’s Detroit Red Wings?

After announce WWP Night w/ the Grand Rapids Griffins details, we take an opportunity to review some mailbag “who says no” trade proposals: McTavish, Karlsson, Sandin Pellikka, Danielson, Bear, Connor, & more – would any of these deals make sense?

All of that & lots more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment – enjoy!

  1. Is it possible that Yzerman is a dickhead to deal with? Both Bert and Walman, fan favs, were shipped out after Arbitration. No deals of note or significant signings in the past few years, while posting a mid team, which he holds responsible to improve enough to make playoffs.

In short, it doesn't seem to me that Yzerman is doing a great job. I would call it barely acceptable. He is my favorite player…but Yzerman the GM… disappointing

  2. Its always a good Sunday when these come up before noon.

Thanks for all the work guys. We're getting close. Mentioned on another podcast I think with the arrival of his first child and getting that monkey off his back after personal struggle will lead to a career year and a splash at the Olympics for Larkin. His dad strength is going to be a big factor this season I think.
Naysayers come at me but were making the playoffs this year baring major injury to the big 3

  3. So, saw an interview with Taylor Kitsch (Terminal List: Dark Wolf and others) on the Empty Netters podcast. Didn’t know the guy grew up a huge Wings fan and had a very good junior hockey career. I really enjoyed listening as he is pretty hilarious. Lots of good stories (how he first met Yzerman, how he was holding out participating in an NHL All Star event unless Yzerman played, and some of those interactions were hysterical). Kind of tangentially Wings related, but I enjoyed the whole interview.

  4. Ed is steady and capable to the task, not sure he will get all star money though. The Red Wings could not afford to whiff on that #1 pick in the 2021 draft after Raymond in 2020, they had to build moving forward with quality pieces. Ed has better size than Brandt Clarke Similar who has similar career point totals so far.
Offensively they passed on Johnson, Sillinger, Guenther, and Eklund who could have helped in the point totals. .

  5. I would love to see Yzerman trade for Mikhail Sergachev to complete Detroit's future defense!
    Trade proposal:
Detroit trades their 2026 1st round draft pick (top 10 protected), 2026 2nd round draft pick, Shia Buium, and Erik Gustavsson to Utah Mammoth for Mikhail Sergachev.

    Detroit Red Wings 2025-2026 line-up:

    Soderblom Larkin Raymond
    DeBrincat Kasper Kane
    JVR Copp Appleton
    Rasmussen Compher Berggren

    Sergachev Seider
    Edvidsson Johansson
    Chariot JBD
    Holl

    Gibson
    Talbot

  6. Good solutions today versus optimum solutions that may never materialize. That is how I view some of the options that would make the team better. Acquisition costs need to be taken into consideration, but we have the prospect pool of close players to pay some of those.

  7. Maybe should watch first. Kasper 8.7 x 8 and Edvinsson 8.555 x 8 They are CORE. And stop complaining team not having first line left winger. What more 39 goal DeBrincat is? List all others.

  8. If buffalo starts the season off slow I am throwing everything at them to get Dahlin. Having mo, ed, al Jo, dahlin and asp would be bonkers
