The Montreal Canadiens have trade Carey Price and a 5th round pick to the San jose Sharks for defencemen Gannon Laroque. Carey Price has only one-year remaining on his eight-year 10.5M AAV contract that he signed in 2018. He has not played in the NHL since 2022 and the move creates cap flexibility and space for the Canadiens.

Great trade. Sets up to make a trade deadline deal. We’ll see how Dach and Newhook do and if they rise to the occasion or if we need to make a trade for a 2c on a team that will miss the playoffs.
Looking at what it means for the Habs more specifically, they have Matheson on a 4.8M deal that expires at the end of the year who might be playing 3rd pair minutes this season. They also have Dach at 3.3M expiring this year and they just signed Struble to a 1.4M deal that has 2 years on it. If they traded Matheson away, or if they traded Dach+Struble, they would have over 9M in cap space. So, if by the deadline they decide that Dach won't cut it as 2C and they need to get someone, they can trade Dach+Struble, or if they decided Matheson isn't part of their future, they can trade him and can trade for basically anyone they want, even Sidney Crosby however unlikely that may be. Crosby's deal is 8.7M, they'd have over 9M if they trade away either Matheson or Dach+struble. Other option would be cap retention but that usually comes with a higher price tag so what knows if they'd be willing to pay that. So if the Habs are in the hunt or playing well and want a 2C, they will have the capital to do so!
As a Habs fan, it's exciting to consider the options that financial freedom buys us. But it's also heartbreaking. I think every Habs fan was secretly hoping that Price was staying in shape and his knee would magically recover just in time for one final cup run once the team was good. Obviously that was just some fantasy but you just didn't want to believe his career was over. I remember he visited my home town one year to sign autographs at a future shop. The line was so big it went around the future shop twice. They had to film the line with a helicopter just to get it on the news. I remember his first game back from Injury after that cup run, me and my buddy bought last minute tickets to the game. There was a nearly 15 minute ovation for Price before the game. Delayed the start time but they couldn't get the Bell Centre to shut up and sit down lol. I'll miss Price but he'll always be a Hab. Looking forward to his number hanging in the rafters.

Both Shea Weber and Carey Price knew 2021 was their last chance ! They give it all but it was not enough to beat the cap cheater of Tampa Bay Lightning. TB was a better team but they spent more that year.

We have missed Price since he stopped playing due to injuries, This is a money trade for both teams, His retirement will be in Montreal of that I have 0 doubts. That being said it's gonna be weird starting a season with no one on LTIR or salary retention from the get go.
Thank you for the explanation for the San Jose gain in that trade. This helps make sense why it costs only a 5th round to move the contract compared to Monahan that cost a 1th to Calgary despite Monahan being an active player.

As a leafs fan I'll probably get shit for this, but price was so fun to watch. The dude seemed like he didn't have the form good goalies do. And to this day i have no idea if it was because he learned differently or he was so disgustingly good that he didnt want anyone to read his body language.

I think one thing was missed reported elsewhere. SJS were also coming up on 50 contract limits, so taking a contract back from SJS was also a benefit for them. Ends up being a true win win for all teams
