Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres in a race to end their playoff droughts
The Buffalo Sabres are not the only team with a lengthy playoff drought. The Detroit Red Wings are riding the fourth longest playoff drought in NHL history at 9 seasons. Will they end it before the Sabres do? Is the acquisition of John Gibson enough to push Detroit into a playoff spot?
Have they passed the Buffalo Sabres in the Atlantic Division? Sneaky Joe says that’s up to Mo Seider and Lucas Raymond.

atleast detroit is doing stuff, they should not be lumped in with buffalo
Don't ever compare Gibson to Levi. Levi has just begun.
Yzerman never won a cup in Tampa and when he went over there?? they already had Stamkos and Hedman..so he walked into a damn good thing but he should not get credit for that team like he is given all the time..his real baby is this Red Wings team so I wantb to see how that pans out..cause so far he has not been good and he has way more access to free agents than the Sabres do
Yes the Red Wings will make the playoffs before the Sabres
What kind of biased nonsense is this! The Red Wings have been incredibly close to a playoff spot throughout the last couple of years. Now that the penalty kill is getting addressed with Appleton being added, Detroit will be SO MUCH of a better team this year than what you’re giving them credit for. There is no way Buffalo is finishing above the Red Wings this time especially after the last 14 years. Regarding goaltending, this is a MASSIVE improvement compared to Mrazek. Gibson was in front of one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL yet he pulled a 0.919 Save Percentage. That’s not even including how Cam Talbot had a 0.901 Save Percentage throughout the last season as well. The only real critique present that I have on Yzerman is his handling of the Jake Walman trade. I’m willing to play the long game here especially since Cossa is moving up in the pipeline and should get the start next season. Hopefully Sebastian Cossa and Axel-Sandin Pellikka start making it up the roster soon now that Gustuvsson, Charoit, and Holl are finally leaving. That will fix the defense of the team.
Nothing about Power is great lol
Every body has been below Buffalo for 14 years have rebuilt and passed us to make the playoffs. Boston will be next or any team below us. Give Kevin another extension
Detroit has no scoring beyond Larkin, Debrincat, Kane and Raymond. Raymond is awesome but that's about it. Then their blue line is weak beyond Seider and Edvinsson… And Gibson isn't going to save them. They are a wild card at best the Sabres are slightly better IMO with Thompson, Tuch, Zucker, McLeod, Norris, Kulich… Bufs b line anticipated better with Lord K-Ring, Timmins add ons obviously Dahlin at the helm. Obviously we know I'd love to see Helleson in their somewhere (and Weegar if Flames ever decide to pull the plug and go rebuild… Which is hard with Wolf in net), and possibly the Sabes should go for McTavish if he's obtainable 👍 🏒
What if Josh Doan scores 25 goals? How boss would that be? 🏒
Ha ha ha ha ha ha powers a great player ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
I don't understand sabres fans and their love affair with Owen Power. He's proven nothing and has never looked like an elite player.
1. Dahlin
2. Thompson
3. Tuch
4. Power/Byram
6. Benson
7 can remain empty, but tbh Power and Byram are kind of around the same level ngl. Byram is maybe better I think right now at least. Power should have the higher ceiling cause being as tall as he is in sports is super weird.
Detroit will surpass Buffalo. Gibson is a difference maker and he now has offense and slightly better defence. Detroit will make it and unfortunately Buffalo won't
1. Lyon was NOT better than Gibson last year. Gibson had a .912SV% while Lyon only had an 896SV% and Lyon only played 1 more game so the argument of sample size is irrelevant.
2. The defence isn’t good but saying it’s just Seider really shows how little you know about the wings because Edvinsson is a stud but the rest could definitely be better
3. A lot of the advanced analytics don’t tell the whole story because they were terrible under Lalande but improved under Todd and statistically had a playoff record pace under him.
4. Again once Todd came in Kapser was at the top of all rookie scoring since January to the end of the season and he as producing at low 50s in point pace.
5. It’s the sexy pick to say the sabres have all this growth potential with young guys… but that’s all if’s and hopefully’s and not sure fire bets
6. Larkin> Norris and Kasper > kulich if your basing it off last year so wings are better down the middle
7. The sabres got worse offensively on paper losing Pererka and you can cope thinking Josh Doan and Kesslring will even it out, you lost an almost 70 point winger
8. It’s always about if Buffalo will have its young players finally break out but it just doesn’t happen or at least not enough to make a difference
9. At least with Detroit sure we have less young players with POTENTIAL to take steps but… not a guarantee either. The wings added some players to make slight bottom six improvements offensively, defensive depth, and Gibson in goal, so you can’t say they got worse. The wings have a much higher floor than sabres and is a much safer bet. Plus let’s not act like soderblom, Berggren, Johansson, and Edvinsson don’t have potential to grow and take steps being all in low 20s for age.
10. Make fun of our defence all you want but your team tied with the dog shit penguins for the most goals allowed in the league. I like kesslring as an add but he isn’t gonna magically improve that number drastically.
70 points lol.. look at Todd's number since the coaching change. A Canadian coach will bring Canadian play to the lineup. You have no clue about Detroit's line up. You said Edvinsson is a no body lol. Give your head a shake. SAP, Danielson, MBN, Trey and Cossa. top D prospect, Top 2 goalie prospects and 2 of the top 5 forward prospects in the minors. Take a look at their top Russian prospect that I didn't mention. Detroit will soon be a powerhouse. They make the playoffs this year. SAP in talks for ROY.
You missed Simon Edvinsson on the Redwings blue line – 22 y.o., 31 points, +12. A young talent that needs to be watched. Gibson is a good addition. Problem is that the Atlantic is so tough the last years. Florida is surely in. All the other teams are unsure to me. I guess the Canadiens will get in, they have a great team. The Leafs, Sens and Lightning will be on more or less the same level, but if at all I only see a slight gap between these teams and the Bruins, Redwings and Sabres. In the Metro the Flyers and Jackets, Rangers might compete for a wild card. Penguins and Islanders are out. Will be a very interesting season.
Always fun to listen to a fan of another team try to analyze yours
Ben Chiarot (sure-aught, not chariot) isn't an ideal top pairing defenseman but he's provided steady defense for multiple seasons now. Simon Edvinsson was a 6th overall pick for a reason. He's 6'6" and put up 31 points in his first full season. Albert Johansson was his partner and an actual rookie and he was just as steady, actually playing defense better than Edvinsson IMO. This blue line is quite fine, if you ask me. Gustafsson could bounce back after a disappointing season, and if Bernard-Docker is better than Justin Holl, even our bottom pairing is better than last year.
Stop this crap, we could have traded for him 5 yrs ago, who is our GM…. is Kevin and Terry sponsoring your pod cast. This owner needs to bud the F out and Fire this GM Kevin Adams. It won't change, your fn clueless
Yikes! Thanks for the jersey shout out 😂
Say what you want about GMKA, he's way and above what Yzerman has done in DET
It matters not Buffalo Sabres general manger is a ducking disease" Steve yzermen is a Fukin Hockey hall of fame legend and Gm!
Explain to me when Tage Thompson got bulldozed and no one in the team cared
