fwiw, 65 pts would have finished Sharks 31st last season, 70pts finishes 30th. (behind CHI and NSH)
Not sure the Sharks can jump up that far in the standings next season. I admire JD's thoughts but find them unrealistic in this regard.
I predict it is unlikely that the Sharks are 32nd again and most likely they end up in the bottom 3-5. Bottom 8? Nope.
This is where I disagree with JD. I think anything above 32nd, having most of the FA acquisitions work out and the continued development of the prospects is a winning season for the Sharks.
I also believe that the FA market will be as bad or worse next offseason than it was this offseason. With a cap jump of over 8 million most impact FAs will be resigned as other teams would rather keep a player they know than hope one of the few FAs will sign with them.
The Sharks being in the position they are, means most FAs (who typically want to win either now or very soon) will have the Sharks at the bottom of their list (despite being able to get more money as money is not always their prime objective).
This being the case, I expect the Sharks to resign/retain/extend as many players as they can that can help the team now and in the near future. I speak of Klingberg, Wennberg, Ferraro, Lilljegren, Kurashev, etc.
Yeah, there are other ways to acquire players, but what the Sharks have the most of is cap.
And the cap is best used in free agency as it comes at no other immediate cost. Trading to get players costs more than just cap, it costs assets (picks and prospects) and most likely means a bad contract coming back.
As GMMG has stated, they are not there yet. Maybe after next season if the prospects continue to develop and give GMMG confidence that he has slots filled not just in the now, but in the future when they are hoping to contend.
