LeBrun: ‘When McDavid says he’s ready to sign, that’ll be a 5-minute negotiation’
Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan are joined by TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun to discuss where the contract talks between Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers stand and when should Oilers fans start to panic.
I think even if McDavid would prefer to play in TOR, he might feel that winning a Cup with the team that drafted him is more important than going elsewhere to do it and being seen as a bit of a mercenary. Like it or not, many people put an asterisk next to Ray Bourque's Cup win because he didn't win it with BOS.
It's September.. why isn't he ready to sign? Oh yeah, it's obviously because he doesn't wanna carry a worse depth team with a rookie coach and trash goalie tandem surrounded by AHLers to fill the gaps from lost key players like Perry, Kane, Skinner, Arvidson, etc.. Crazy that idiots actually think he'll take a pay cut to carry a trash team on his back for another 3 years lmao. He wants out, it's obvious.
Matthews is arguably top 3 or 4 in the league. If McDavid is going to leave Dristle, you couldn't replace him with a better player than Matthews. Maybe Mackinnon, but that would be it. They are also close friends who train together.
I think he should steal a move out of Crosby's playbook, and tie his number to his salary, 9.7 M per year x 3 years. That would give the oilers 4 more years total to win. He could even take around 16 million, but defer a bunch of money and get his cap hit down to 9.7. If after the four years they have not won, he would still only be 32, and he would have given the oilers 14 years. I think at that point the fans would understand. He says it's all about winning, if true, then show that. He's still made well over 100 million so far in his career, with many years to go, and tons of endorsement money. Sid put winning above money, and still will end up over 170 million plus endorsement money, and has 3 cups. That's why Sid is his generation's GOAT.

If he doesnt want to resign than he shpukd eventually let the team know to allow them to do a sign and trade to get value back.
oilers fans in denial, he wants to play in Toronto

He should take as much as possible so there is nothing left to build a team around him because it is all about the money.
He’s gone
Are you on crack? H e sure won’t win a cup in Toronto

He’s waiting for everyone else to set the president
Just say it. He doesn't know if he wants to stay in Edmonton. Period.

It might not be about where but for how long?
If he signs short term and something bad happens and he can't get $18M or $19M every year after only 4 years instead of a full 8.
It's a big decision, so taking time on it is a good idea.
