Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is a #sprinting #trackandfield athlete who has won gold medals and broken world records. But she has never done either in the 400 meter dash. Now that she has won her second US Championships in the event, will she be able to win gold in the biggest race of the year? And how will her decision to race less frequently than her competition impact her the World Championship?

I'm thinking she has already conquered the 400 hurdles, and doesn't want to later in life wonder if she could've won the 400 flat. No regret.
"That is not an opinion. That is a fact." — McLOL.
I expect Paulino to be the favorite for the 400 at Worlds. Sydney has not yet run as fast as Paulino's PB in the 400. But it wouldn't completely shock me if Sydney pulled off the win at Worlds. Notice that Paulino's signature is a strong final 200 in the 400. She's sometimes behind, or well behind, at the end of the first 100 or the first 200. Sydney is a strong finisher, too. So this should be an interesting battle.
Sydney is an incredibly strong sprinter; but so far she has lost gas in the last 50 of every 400 she's run while being on American record pace. If she's been working on that last 50, she can take the Gold and the American record. The WR is out of her reach
Somebody here acknowledged it already but I’ll reiterate; if SML, MP, and Nassar come off the final turn within inches of each other, what a race it will be!!!!! Paulinos final 200m is fierce, so it’ll be one to remember. SML shook Bol in the Paris 400mh final cuz she went into another gear that was impossible to match. I’ve never been more excited to see a 400m final since MJ was competing😊
This is a race with 3 women. Everyone else is eating popcorn and hoping for a great view. (Sydney can race men. Training with men who can all beat the women's WR has to be more effective than running against slower women.)
Shericka started out as a 400m runner. Would love to see her drop down to the 200.
Lert me summarize things this way: 1) New American Record for Sydney? YES. 2) New World Record for Sydney? NO. (Not in 2025, and probably not ever.) 3) Gold medal at the World Champs for Sydney in the 400 meters in 2025? Probably not.
Sydney will make history if she gets one 400m medal in Tokyo. whether it's gold, silver or bronze. There's no any women has ever got both 400m and 400mH medals at Olymnpics/Worlds during their CAREER.
Why would she regret anything? She's the 400m hurdles GOAT and has the medals and WRs. If she loses the 400m at Worlds, so be it…she's still learning the event.
Does she run against the best in the 400m .
Been running with her brother since i was a kid. Anything from 100M Hurdles to 200m to 400m to her signature event 400m hurdles …. She’s going to dominate. She won’t lose. We really never seen what she can do open in her pro days. But go check back high school.
When she writes her bio twenty years from now, she'll say, "I didn't really like running"
She's still getting bronze tho. this ain't the hurdles and she's gonna learn that very quickly
The race hype will continue to build Sydney's brand.
She's the queen of the 400 hurdles and beats everybody when she runs it so her next goal could be to accomplish the same thing in the 400 flat before the end of her career. It is risky like you said and she might lose the race at the Worlds but she has a couple years to go before the next Olympics in LA. to train and hopefully win the gold medal.
For me, all three have a good chance of winning gold. Naser, Paulino, and Sydney have run between 48.6 and 48.9 this year. At the moment, I don't see anyone else fighting for that bronze medal. Watch out for Naser.
I have no reason to believe that she is mismanaging her season. She has always been prepared
Yeah she has nothing left to prove in the 400 hurdles the only thing left that would enhance her resume in that respective event is if she runs 49 for the event. She has no equal. So she went to challenge herself in the flat instead. 😊 she might get under 48 one day kersee sucks at coaching mu but him and Sydney get it right Everytime
Judging from how Nasar and Paulino ran in the Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich yesterday, I think there is competition coming her way at the Worlds. Either way, 2025 is proving to be an awesome time for track, and I can't wait to see the races.
McLaughlin-Levrone May be a great athlete, but she is no competitor. She has no fire to compete against the best and will take every opportunity to dodge anyone who might beat her.
Simply put. IMO, it's either;
Naser, Paulino, Sydney
Paulino, Naser/Sydney
If Naser could go out fast and endure it, she wins it. I don't see Sydney winning it. But if she doesn't medal, I'll be more than shocked
Sydney will beat Paulinho at 2025 worlds 400m final. It wont be easy but she will win.
Her priority is serving The Lord. Amen to that!
Content… LOL. Coach Rob stuck in the content loop. Well, at least he likes to hear himself talk.
If all she had to do to race in the DL final was to compete at another DL event, why wasn't Hodgkinson there in Zurich?
47.8 incoming by sdy.
You could say the same for Fembe Bol. She competes against women who are not top competition and gets top reviews, however when Syd runs against her, she gets whipped badly! Sydney has been training for this event in private trying a different approach to improve her times. She will be at her top form when the Worlds come around and prove she is one of the greatest athletes to compete.
Let’s go Syd!!!!! 😁
Coach B, this is a beat up. Sydney is a young woman who we really must hope and believe will remain healthy and have a long career. Surely in the US you must believe in her more than anywhere; believe and trust in your nation, the value of your Continental races and . . . obviously, believe in the intimate trust between her and her super famous coach. The fact that she has such an unbelievably long history in that other event, does not detract from the long efforts in understanding and developing the technique in this new one. And just in exactly the manner decided between the two of them. Look back — if you dare at the development in times by the current world record holder, and how long it took for one perfect day in Canberra.
I've gathered Sydney's objective is to get the American record. She doesn't need to race others if she's targeting a time. Indeed, she's been racing against her own world records for a while now. I don't expect her to beat Paulino or Naser this year. I only hope that she achieves her goals.
And can we stop with the "sYdNey DoEsn'T raCe eNoUgh" narrative. 😊 Anderson debunked that last year. In '24 she ran more races than any other Oly gold medal winner in the 400M or 400Mh, male and female. Rai ran 10, Q ran 11, Paulino ran 13, Syd ran 15.
She’s going after Marita Koch’s 47.6. She has the 400M Hurdles WR. Now its the 400M. That’s it. Nothing else.
