The Clock Is Ticking for McDavid

Connor McDavid is the best player in the NHL, but his next contract could change everything. Will the Oilers finally build a Cup-winning roster, or risk wasting his prime? Hockey’s biggest question is about to be answered.

  1. I hope Panthers and Oilers meet again in the finals. No matter which team wins, we'll be witnessing greatness.

  2. You HAVE to win a cup. You don’t need two or three or four. You need one. I have followed the NHL since 1981. A lot of great players never won the cup. Their legacy is that of a guy who never won. Lundquist, Thornton, Iginla to name three out of…hundreds? Lindros, Bure, Kariya. Many have forgotten these players completely. Iginla played forever and was a powerhouse player who left in a whimper wanting to continue yet not a single team would sign him. Nobody ever mentions him anymore. He never really retired as far as I know. Ovechkin said it a year or two before finally becoming a Stanley cup champion. I need to win a cup. He did, and he didn’t need a trade to get it done. McDavid, Dionne, Hawerchuk, Peter Stastny.

  3. Seriously. I’d gladly make 8 instead of 12 million over 8 seasons if that means having a solid roster around me. I’d still be financially secure for life. I don’t get the need to be the best paid player. It’s actually a great look to take team friendly deals. Makes it much easier to like the player which in return can give large paydays in commercials and other sorts of branding with name of non selfish player attached cause their likeable. Nobody likes greedy people. The best player making much less than players he often humiliates on the ice by dominating proves to everyone that winning is what matters. The oilers had two shots at a cup. Nobody will care. One team wins each playoff. All the others lose their final game. It doesn’t matter if you lose three finals in a row like St.louis Blues did decades ago. They lost all of them. Oilers making playoffs not even a certainty in 25/26. Remember the Bruins just three years ago. A top three regular season ever and massive cup favourite. Now they aren’t a playoff team. Gotta deliver when it’s there.

  4. The only way he's doing it anytime soon is to take a massive pay cut and sign with Florida. As a 17-20 million dollar man….. that's not getting it done anywhere.

  5. You really have to wonder why the best player in the league can't attract other talented players to come to his city. The fact that they sunk $19 million into the worst defensive pairing in the league is pretty telling that no one actually wants to play for Edmonton.

  6. McDavid should goto the Habs! God that'd be incredible, itll never happen but if he wants to have a better team than those two should drop their salary so they can be allowed to GET some greater depth and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, get the man a good goalie.

  7. the president said its not a negotiation will wait on him , made me laugh my ass off , so basically will pay him watever his greedy asss wants which i bet he takes 20mil or over with the cap going up to 114 million and if he takes the max 20% that what 21 million a year lmao then ill laugh more when oilers fans bitch and cry as to why they have no depth or goaltending ,serious thye would be better off trading him for an elite goalie like elite and a couple other players and picks , other than my team the avs , we won a cup with 2 goalies with out back up franky stepping up big time , but look at tampa and florida , elite goalies locked up long term ,vassy is making 9.5 and bob 10 million , even if oilers did that and paid a goalie then they would have no depth and better dmen , they fu cked themselves giving him 12.5 million outta entry level when the max was 14 mil at the time lol , sorry oilers no cups for you or u mcmuffin , i am for once happy with my teams goalies 5.5 for blacky is a god damm steal , i live in alberta and hate the oilers lol so i love to see there down fall . they had there chance and blew it , now they are gonna get bounced in the 1st or 2nd round , and to give some context mackinnon stayed at 6.3 mil till we won a cup then went to 12.6 only 100k more than mcmuffin, hes been at 12,5mil for 8 years lol mack and landy took less money so we could build a team .. oilers stars sure didnt do that lol

  8. If McDavid never wins a Stanley Cup (which is very possible)… every team needs to take note: INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS CANNOT WIN CUPS ALL BY THEMSELVES!

  9. As much as I think it would very exciting for the league if Mcdavid hits free agency, I doubt he leaves Edmonton. His personality like a lot of hockey players (especially Canadians) ain't built for that type of smoke he would get for leaving when he couldn't win. Especially if he goes to the team that would make basically the most sense which is the team that beat him two years in a row already.

  10. The highest paid players in the NHL do not win the SC. I do not begrudge a player that bags as much as they can in their career, just don't lie to yourself that you can account for so much of the team salary cap and still expect your team to be able to afford role players that can win. McDavid will never win a SC as long as he is the highest paid player.

  11. Mcdavid won’t win in Edmonton. Same as matthews won’t win in Toronto. They wanna win? Take a discount. Build a deep team around you. You haven’t won shit to be worth that money. Take a bridge. Build a team. Win a cup. THEN. you can ask for the farm.

  12. His points will severely decline this year. Every player after the age of 28 declines. He will not be worth his contract. Happens every time…. His prime his past him. He's gonna get $15 million for maybe 100 points a season… Best to trade him. Also his wife wants out. This trade will sink the oilers.

  13. Trade him and get some future prospects. We won a Stanley Cup without Wayne Gretzky and I believe we can win without him.
