With Rust and Rakell still in the fold, the forwards are plenty good to start hot and stay competitive. Who knows what happens in goal, but as you note we have 4 guys to platoon. That defense though. How does that defense pull together enough to be competitive? It would take a Graves career resuscitation, Pickering doing his best Slavin impression (assuming he even starts the season with the club), and at least one of Clifton or Dumba pulling themselves together. That's a lot to ask.

A hot start means almost nothing. This team will lose in the first round of the playoffs as a 6th-8th seed.
The defense might be historically bad
It will be like we're back to the latter half of the 90's. Hot start and then .500 their way into the playoffs.
they've had hot starts before….then they crash. And with that Olympic break they'll get cold anyway
I think the Rangers will be better than last year, especially under Sullivan. They still have Shesterkin. Sullivan hasn't had a reliable goalie since Matt Murray's unbelievable playoff run.

if they still have graves and karlson on defense a bad start is more likely ! rangers only got rid of 2 of their problems they still have many more ! sully will get them into the playoffs but they wont go far !
Honestly, I expect a hot start because of the change behind the bench. Yes, I've been calling for them to get rid of Sullivan since the debacle that was the 2019-20 play-in round no show against Montreal. Based on what we know of Dan Muse's history, his style, and system, we could see a huge improvement just by cutting the number of games lost after jumping out to a two or more goal lead. If you cut that in half, you're looking at a net positive of 12 to 16 points in the standings.
