You nailed it on the Angels. I really don't understand why they can call themselves the "Los Angeles" Angels but the hockey team on the other side of the freeway calls themselves (rightfully) the ANAHEIM Ducks. The Ducks know they aren't the Kings. They know their target market. They embrace where they are (Orange County) and unlike the Angels, they don't pretend to represent a whole city that they don't. The Angels should just go back to being the Anaheim Angels and let the Dodgers have LA. Embrace your fans in Orange County.
The Angel should just call themselves the Anaheim Angels since there is already a baseball team that's called that has Los Angeles in the name and that team is actually in the city of Los Angeles.

Don’t hit on the San Francisco 49ers playing in San Jose too much, after all, in an earlier era, all the cemeteries were relocated to the farthest reaches of the county, Colma. Note a few burials still exist within the 1776-built Mission Dolores and the San Francisco National Cemetery
SF Giants and NY Giants dont play in SF nor NY respectively either.
Angles are like the ulgy step sister you only want to see a few times a year. They have been so mismanaged. LA is a top market and they have not been to the playoffs in years. This team is way undervalued. Build a new venue ie Rams style and watch. Being in the number 2 or 3 TV market alone should have brought top dollar. They have not unlocked the resources of that market.
Why can’t they name them California angels? Is it because Disney owned them?

I live a stones throw from Anaheim Stadium. For me to go see the Dodgers, I have to leave before 4 to get to Dodger Stadium by first pitch. Yet Artie does not use this to his advantage.
There’s no reason for the Angels to say LA. The majority of fans are in OC, the IE, and San Gabriel Valley. Yet Artie wants to be called LA.
It’s ridiculous and just plain dumb.
Regarding the Angels name branding, keep in mind, Orange County was once part of Los Angeles County until 1889. What is now Orange County was simply the southern end of Los Angeles County. I don’t have any problem with the team incorporating LA into their name.
PS — Who knows, maybe the city of Anaheim will evict the team and the Angels can move down the freeway to the now closed Westminster Mall!

The history of the NFL Giants and the "New York" prefix is actually an interesting journey.
Most of their players live in NJ.
Their offices/HQ are in NJ.
Fans are about half-and-half (actually more like 45%-45% as fans come from PA, CT, etc.)
After they were rescued from the Yale Bowl as Yankees Stadium was going through their 1st reincarnation, and the NJ taxpayers built them a stadium, the ownership initially dropped the moniker "New York Giants" and called themselves "The Giants".
NJ Sports Exposition Authority used to have a map of NJ at the 50yard line.
But 10~15 years ago, under Goodell, they shut that down.

I like claiming an entire region instead of a city you don’t play in . New England Patriots did it the best. They play outside of Providence but include fans from CT to Maine. The Angels should go back to being The California Angels.
"Bad taste in my mouth" is a great way to put it. Because a lot of times there are good reasons, even if it gets awkward. And we fans can't do a whole lot about it.
It's kinda like the New Jersey Devils, people think the Devils represent all of New Jersey but they don't.

Arte Moreno stripped both the City of Anahiem and Orange County of their honetown team by rebranding them "Los Angeles Angeles." And all for money. He said that everyone's heard of Los Angeles but not Anaheim. I wont mrntion thst the ANAHEIM Ducks, right across the street, were world champions in hockey at the time OR thst little mouse that lives 3 miles west of ANAHEIM Stadium (at the time) at Disneyland. No obe's heard if that place or know wheres it located. To this day travelers still ask where in Los Angeles the Angels play? BTW, Anaheim separatrd from LA County back in 1888. Sure, the Los Angeles Angels msde sense their first three years – they played in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium. But now, for marketing purposes, which still hasnt panned out, its just balderdash. Rename the Angels The Anaheim Angels, give the city and the county back its team!

I think the Giants and Jets would lose their TV area rights. That was how it was explained to me.
Plus, Warriors owner Franklin Meuli actually had the grand plan of playing 1/3 of the season at the Cow Palace, the new Oakland Arena and SJ State. Then, they realized that would've been a logistical nightmare and abandoned the idea.

My geography degree (for whatever that's even worth) tells me 'Los Angeles Angels' is the correct way to go. Anaheim is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Anaheim is essentially just a big suburb. 'California Angels' was always weird to me, as they're not the only MLB team representing the state. Maybe Angels fans will disagree with me as they leave the ballpark and turn on their Los Angeles radio station, driving home to catch the highlights on their Los Angeles TV station.

How about the “Strip in Las Vegas” is actually in Paradise, Nevada. So they should be called the “Paradise Athletics”.
The clunkiest name for a franchise like this was "Capital Bullets" which was only used for one NBA season (1973-74.) The Bullets had just left the Baltimore Civic Center for the brand new Capital Centre in Landover, MD, and picked the lamest way to avoid choosing between Baltimore and Washington as their locator.
What kinda gets me in the inverse of this, when a team moves but keeps a name based on the original location – the Jazz, the Lakers, etc.
Speaking of Panthers, why aren't the Carolina Panthers called the North Carolina Panthers? I don’t know NC geography, but is Charlotte close enough to South Carolina that both states can claim the team?

The Angels stealing the Los Angeles name for advertising purpose is low and shouldn't have EVER been allowed by MLB, but we know who runs the show over there in NY between Selig and Manfred so there's that. It's ridiculous.
Same goes for the 49ers. If they were intent on keeping the name San Francisco perhaps they should have done a better job securing land IN San Francisco. It's so wild to me that they call themselves SF when they're just not SF anymore.
The Angels really are the worst here, though. Dumpster fire organization owned by a dumpster fire human being. Moreno couldn't even get his team to October with the likes of Ohtani AND Trout. What a mess.
All I know is the Angel's only World Series championship occurred when they were the Anaheim Angels. I'm just saying.
For the Angels it's just disrespectful for the fans of Orange County Even though the 2 counties are right next to each other they are completely different atmospheres. The Angels have been in Orange County since 1966 and won the World Series in 2002 when they were called the Anaheim Angels and Disney united the county most locals to this day still call them the Anaheim Angels. Nobody wanted that name changed except for that HORRIBLE owner.

I think "broad" names are stupid. I grew up in the bay area but now in in Salt Lake City. Professional sports franchise that have a state in front of their team name instead of the city need to take pride in the city they reside. Utah Jazz and the Utah Mammoths??? Cmon man! Whats wrong with calling them the Salt Lake City Jazz?

Honestly I've never heard of one Angels fan recently who can't wait for him to sell the team. Unfortunately he'll be here to torment us for a long time.
All of us here are hoping that our Mayor Aitken can mend fences with Arte and get some ballpark upgrades done and bring back the Anaheim name but there doesn't seem to be any big news about that now, hopefully ??? this winter ?
