Leafs trade Marner to Vegas, winger signs eight-year, $96M deal with Golden Knights

Mitch Marner’s time with the Toronto Maple Leafs has come to an end.

The Maple Leafs have agreed to sign-and-trade Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Monday.

Marner then penned an eight-year, $96-million deal worth $12 million in AAV.

Centre Nicolas Roy comes back to the Leafs in the deal. The six-foot-four Roy, 28, had 15 goals and 16 assists in 71 games last season. He has one year left on his contract with a cap hit of $3 million.

Marner, 28, spent the past nine seasons with the Maple Leafs after being selected fourth overall by his hometown club in 2015. The Markham, Ont., product has been more than a point-per-game player during the regular season (741 points in 657 games) and just shy of that in the playoffs (63 points in 70 games).

However, his tenure with the team has been marked by playoff failures — the most recent being a 6-1 loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of their second-round series this past season.

The core of Marner, Auston Matthews, John Tavares, William Nylander and Morgan Rielly advanced past the first round just twice in eight seasons together, losing all six of their winner-take-all games along the way.

Marner was the third-highest-paid player on the Maple Leafs at $10.9 million. He signed his previous deal in September 2019 under former GM Kyle Dubas.

In March, Marner reportedly declined to waive his no-trade clause for a potential deal to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Mikko Rantanen.

Marner’s point total (221 goals and 520 assists) places him fifth all-time on the Maple Leafs’ scoring list, behind only Mats Sundin, Darryl Sittler, Dave Keon and Borje Salming. Matthews, with 727 points, sits sixth.

  1. Didnt he get mad and yell at his teammates durring the playoffs and no-one didn't even look at him ? Lol i felt at that moment he wasent coming back !

  2. If you think Toronto is better without Marner… you're lost. Every team but Toronto wanted this guy. Toronto won't win the cup for another 20 years.

  3. The fact that the only one from the playoffs is a blocked shot while he was still on an ELC says a lot about his play when it mattered

  4. mostly individual regular season achievements, not much doing in the playoff success department.
nothing he did made me proud especially from the time he threatened to hold out at training camp for his contract in 2019 until he left.
in fact, my proudest moment is when the spoiled, entitled, selfish baby finally took his ball and went anywhere but home.
"wake the f*** up" – said to his team by mitch marner in game 7 and he hadn't even worked up a sweat and was nowhere to be found on the ice himself.
mitch marner too scared too man up, wears gilmour's number in vegas but doesn't have 1/100 the heart, grit, toughness, tenacity and the killer instinct that doug gilmour had.
he wore 16 in toronto, a far more skilled player than darcy tucker sure, but doesn't compare in the intangibles department.
other notables to wear 16 in toronto gary leeman, russ courtnall, eddie olczyk, clarke macarthur and CRAIG BERUBE.
you know who else wore 16 in toronto? nikolai borschevsky and even he had more of all of the above than mitch marner in 93.
    good riddance.

  5. Mitch we had issues but it doesn't help anyone to be a bitter ex. Go get your cup, and maybe we can have ya back for your pre retirement

  6. Should have put his contract negotiations at #1. Way to bend us over Mitch, you really "loved" Toronto when it was lining your pockets 😂 what about him throwing the puck over the glass in the Montreal series? What an amazing clutch play. Now he's running to Vegas because the lights were too bright in Toronto 😂

  7. Ofc the Leafs didn’t do much of anything in the post season, but most of that had to do with terrible cap management. It wasn’t Marners fault he has offered that 11M contract and what person realistically would’ve turned that down?? Dubas handcuffed this team years ago and Marner has had to take the brunt of fan disappointment when this Leafs team was never built properly to actually have a chance at anything major at least in the playoffs.

  8. 0 goals in 20 games 5,6, and 7. You can slice it any way you want too but your highest paid players have to get you goals in close out playoff games if you want to win and Mitch doesn’t do that so I doubt it gets better in Vegas

  9. the should have traded matthews to Calgary to get Khadri and lined him with Marner American players are garbage

  10. Some of these don’t seem that long ago but it’s hard to believe it’s been nine years and things didn’t work out as planned in Toronto but he’ll have a new chapter of his career in Vegas
