YZERMAN SIGNS HAMONIC & TRADE RUMOR BACKLOG ft. Max Bultman – Winged Wheel Podcast – Aug. 17th, 2025

Steve Yzerman has made a move in the form of bringing Travis Hamonic in to the Detroit Red Wings defense corps.

Tune in as we’re joined by Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit to discuss the signing, how it affects Todd McLellan’s options on the blue line, competing with Justin Holl and Jacob Bernard-Docker, Seider and Edvinsson’s slotting, impact on the Grand Rapids Griffins, and what Steve Yzerman needs to do by way of trade or free agency to fix the blue line and keep playoff hopes alive.

After that, we get into the stagnant but present NHL trade market, the Detroit Red Wings’ potential interest in Erik Karlsson, Mason McTavish, and Kyle Connor, whether Axel Sandin Pellikka or Nate Danielson would be worth giving up to get more offensive support for Lucas Raymond, Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane, and Marco Kasper, & more.

All of that and lots more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment – enjoy!

  1. Just had picked up a Hot ‘N Ready and some Crazy Bread tonight to do my part to support the team. Sat down to eat with my kiddo and saw this posted too. Wings night. Woo Hoo.

  2. As a Penguins fan, currently they are deadset on being the Pittsburgh Crosbys and placating him at the expense of the future. That said, I don't think Karlsson would consider waiving for anything except a contender.

  3. I think Hamonic is the clue that there's going to be some surprises in the lineup after training camp

  4. I would feel better about some of the signings of the past few years if I thought about the problem area they address and said to myself, “Solved.” There are big ifs attached. Solved if (insert performance condition here) happens. Most of those conditions are not high percentage plays.

  5. I don't have a problem with the "depth signings" we've been doing the past few years. It would be insanity to say that these players have no uses whatsoever. The problem I have is that we're not addressing any of our actual needs. We've needed a top line LW and a top four LD for a few years now, and they just refuse to actually do anything about it. Instead they've been using what I call the "dartboard method", which is they just throw a bunch of crap at a dartboard and see what sticks. They did it the past couple years with goalies, they've been doing it for a while with forwards, and now they're doing it with defense. It's not a sustainable strategy, and as much as I know Yzerman wants to, you can't just keep waiting and biding time year after year until all your prospects are ready. At some point you've got to make some kind of a big move or your team will just get stuck in the mushy middle forever.

  6. 31:50 re: Law of Averages
Unfortunately I would argue, given the last few seasons, that Law of Averages would indicate we are in for some significant injuries this year.

  7. I'm not gonna throw shade at the Mike Green trade.
The fact that Yzerman got a 4th round pick for the reanimated corpse of Mike Green was some tidy business, IMO. Also, that was two weeks before the world shut down. It's amazing any trade was able to be made, let alone one that returned an asset.

  8. Max is the man. This year is the most important for Raymond, Seider and the young guys. I'm going to be watching them closer than ever because like it or not it all depends on THEM and that is exactly how it should be. The boys have to grow up mentally!

  9. As a Wings fan who’s seen a lot of Karlsson play in Pittsburgh, he as advertised when it comes to his defensive play. He’s horrible and doesn’t see anything wrong with the way he plays which makes it worse.

  10. Really think ASP is the x factor in this whole D free agency situation. With him there, you have Seider, Aljo, ASP and Edvinsson. In some order. So that's this year potentially, next year probably. Hard to find a 1 year deal for a d man knowing he will go to 3rd line minutes aka purgatory if any longer than one year. Then the cap space will allow for a 1C or 2C.

  11. This team is easily a lottery team with any top player getting injured. Especially Mo or Simon but a top forward would be a big blow as well considering they’re already short a top line left winger. I expect changes to this roster whenever there’s a taker for Compher or Copp. Let’s say Compher bounces back, couldn’t be any worse could he? Are they moving him no matter where they are in the standings? I know my answer and I think Stevie would move him in a heartbeat as well. Who else do they have to sell if this season goes off the rails? Talbot, Moose, Chiarot and a couple other bottom six forwards are about it unless Stevie goes for a major shakeup which I don’t really see happening.

  12. We’ve watched the better player end up in GR over and over again. This “they’ll play the best player” nonsense never plays out that way. Edvinsson would have been in the NHL a year earlier. Kasper wouldn’t have started the year in GR last year.

Why is this front office so allergic to showing some confidence in their prospects?

If we get to a point where we’ve tried Wallinder, JBD, Holl, Lagesson, and Travis Hamonic is the depth we turn to, does it even matter anymore who it was? If we’re that bad off, we were screwed anyways. The difference between Travis Hamonic and a waiver wire pick up or Brogan Rafferty isn’t even going to make a difference in the end. If the ship is going down anyways, I’d rather they just sink with Wallinder or JBD or Tuoumisto or Viro.

  13. Whenever I hear Wings trade rumours it makes me laugh. If its a big name, I promise you Yzerman isnt in on him. He doesnt make good trades or free agent signings. Our strategy is wait until 2030 for the kids and when that doesnt pan out, blame the draft lottery or something. We need our Brisbois.

  14. IMO, it doesn't matter what Ed or AlJo does. As long as Chiarot is anchored around Mo's neck, the room for the Dcorp to grow is incredibly limited.

  15. If Max thinks the Wings will benefit from being a year older, keep in mind that all the over 30 year old players who are declining in speed and ability will also be a year older.

  16. With the state of our D-core I’m starting to think the Walman trade might be our worst trade in the last 10 years. I still don’t understand it

  17. 1:04:45 ooooh man im still so bitter about this, i absolutley SCREAMED for Detroit to pick up Forsling (been watching him since he came up at 16-17 year old and played top pair mins right away here in my hometown Linköping) when he was available. We where dead last that year in the leauge so we had first dibbs, we even had a huge need cause we had several d's out injured at the time. We DID actually went to the waiver wire that very same day Forsling was placed there, but sadly we instead choose to pick up Christian Djoos instead, probably because his father Pär played a short stint with the Red Wings in the early 90s… Really, REALLY frustrating at the time and even more today.

  18. Did you have one random prediction episode yet? Here is mine. Forget points predictions. Edvinsson makes coast-to-coast goal. Yes he will!

  19. You lose all credibility if your willing to give up ASP for McTavish . We have kasper that plays the same exact role
