The Modern Bunker Trend That Tour Pros Use | Film Study | Golf Digest

Have you noticed a change in how Tour pros hit bunker shots these days? It looks a little different from the conventional approach that was taught for decades. So what is the technique? Why does it work? Is it better? In this Film Study, Luke Kerr-Dineen breaks down the modern bunker trend and why it’s becoming more and more prevalent.

  1. This is how I've been playing my bunker shots since I was a kid! Did the same when I played against Collin in high school

  2. Public golf courses have crappy bunkers and there’s no place to practice bunker shots

  3. Just use the toe of the club, keeping the heel or hosel out of the sand. The hosel is what catches the sand. But still use a steep swing, hitting the sand behind the ball. Try it. It works like magic for me.

  4. just hit the slice method, it's easy as. And you dont have to squat low perfectly and look like a fool.

Clubs are getting too easy – should have brought in standardisation a long time ago for the pro regarding wedges and lofts.

  5. For the last four years bunker shots have been my best shot. The last 3 weeks it's been my worst. Fn golf man

  6. Dan Grieve teaches this method as well. If only there was a practice facility nearby. my only time to practice bunkers seems to be when I land in one.

  7. I tried this for the first time yesterday, in a tournament, no practice. Came out perfect, amazing, and has a tap in par. Could bunkers really be that easy?

I have been playing 40 years… i would rate my bunker play at around 10 shots worse on my handicap. With this technique it seems impossible to hit the dreaded skull.

  8. If the sand is nice, that’s a big IF, I would rather be in a green side bunker 7days a week than a thick Bermuda ruff. Way easier to control.

  9. Bunker shots are the easiest shots in the sport—you don't even have to hit the ball, but the sand.
This piece is a load of old cobblers.

  10. We the pro’s play bunkers out of the best conditions possible. For the rest of who play public golf courses, we hit out of bunkers that have no sand, have rocked, are poorly raked or kept up, feel like concrete. We play under extremely different playing conditions…so any instructional videos for amateurs to try to immulate the pros is a joke….

  11. Not really a new thing. Been a playing pro for the last couple of years but I did that 8 or 9 years ago when I first started playing. That’s one of the reason why I never really had to train junker play and was always better than most even at high level

  12. Thank god my coach actually taught me exactly how to hit bunker shots with this method and ive loved bunker shots ever since. He showed me how to alter my technique slightly for hard municipal sand or wet sad as well as nice country club sand. Then he gave me some secret sauce on how he hits fried eggs right next to the lip lol

  13. 5:18… The way Jason gets out of the bunker here, is the only way I used to play bunker shots. It worked kinda great actually… never thought of it as a trick shot

  14. U missed the most important question tho that amateurs want to know. How to hit that perfect amount of sand first??
About all I’ve ever found is u try to skim off some sand. Talk about stating the obvious. The REAL question is HOW?

  15. For me , bottom line is there is no practice bunkers anywhere near me that are open to the public..that i know of…? Central Connecticut 🤷🏼‍♂️✌️

  16. I was taught by the a pro to hit out of the bunker with a square face using the bounce over 20yrs ago. No one believed me that's the way I was taught.

  17. Seve aimed shut and Gary player put weight on the lead side. We call it new school because everyone does it 🤣.
