The New York Rangers have been making lots of trades and signings with the intention of changing up the core group of players on the team. One trade they could look at making that seems somewhat realistic is possibly acquiring Bowen Byram.

I've longingly wished the Rangers could trade for Byram, but I'm not trading Lafreniere to do it. Byram wants out of Buffalo, so he's going to be traded. It's probably unrealistic but my trade is a 1st rounder next year, Parsinnen & Brodzinski. If one of Berard & Othmann was necessary instead of both those guys I'd do it. Byram would be an ideal partner for Borgen.
Laffy could get back to his impressive self with a little motivation

But everything really depends on what use Coach Sullivan projects he can get out of each player.
Can he salvage the terrible Laffy that disgusted and disappointed team and fans so often last year?
Can Coach fit Byram into an improved defense from last year?
What player will give 100% effort and results?
Damn can we at least get the season started and see what the team looks like before talking trading everybody that’s not Igor and Miller.
We def need more defense but at what cost? Laffy can be one of our better forwards. I agree with let’s see the season start before we trade everybody.

On the Sabres side, having Byram gives them another attacking option from the D. That gives them 3 guys who are dangerous from the backend . For us, the prob with moving Laf is that I don't see a definitive replacement at 2nd line wing. We are much more defined on the left side. On the right your choices are Mika , Laf, um 3rd? Rempke on the 4th … pending suspensions. If we sign a wing in the off season like a Necas or Kempe for example, it's a easier pill. In fact , it would make sense. 🏒

NO! We lack enough top 6 players, especially relatively young ones and we have plenty of good defensive prospects. No way, no how, once again we have a trade proposal that looks at the current situation instead of projecting even a couple of years down the line … I know people are pissed at Lafreniere for what happened last year, but he's on a contract that will get better with age, and we all know the guy, if motivated properly, he can eventually approach a PPG if given PP1 time (instead of the garbage PP time he's always gotten). He isn't an aging Mika or Kreider …. let Sully pump this guy up, because he knows how to work with talent. Trade from strength, not weakness. Borgen, a 1st, and a good d'man prsopect is the best I would do. Probably not good enough, but why care?
This would be a fantastic trade. Laffy has proven himself to be lazy and does not have the upside of a top ten, let alone first overall, pick. Soucy goes along as a must move. We actually have fwd options that have that kind of upside potential and won’t leave you feeling like “that was a puck i could have gotten to myself. Why can’t that $7mm dog get there.” Let’s find out what the Otter/Berard/Perrault crew can do.
