Mike Sillinger, born June 29, 1971, in Regina, Saskatchewan, played 17 seasons in the NHL, skating for a record 12 teams! Drafted 11th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 1989, Sillinger racked up 240 goals and 308 assists for 548 points in 1,049 games. Known for his versatility as a center, faceoff prowess, and clutch scoring, he was traded nine times, tying an NHL record. But today, we’re zooming in on his time with the Islanders, where he shined in the twilight of his career.
Sillinger joined the Islanders as a free agent on July 2, 2006, for his final NHL chapter. In his first season (2006-07), he delivered a stellar 59 points—26 goals and 33 assists—in 82 games, helping the Isles reach the playoffs. His 17.1% shooting percentage and 58.8% faceoff win rate were key, earning him a 23rd-place finish in Selke Trophy voting for his two-way play.
