I wouldn't have either #1,& I'm biased-i work at the Nuggets,& Avalanche arena-but McKinnon,& Makar gotta both be top 5 or at least right on the cusp.Makar has not only won 2 Norris but I think has finished 2nd once & 3rd twice.Only time in his career he didn't finish top 3 was his rookie year when he won the Calder.And Werenski is great but he fell off a lot at the end-as did Columbus. I still believe Makar,& Hughes are in a class by themselves & Werenski is half a notch below. And I still think Makar is slightly better defensively than Hughes-who has improved.But Makar has more defensive responsibility here.More PK,& shifts vs the opponents top offensive guys as the analytics will tell you. Makar is a better goal scorer also but Hughes is the best playmaking/passing dman in the NHL. For how young he is,ability,& intangibles-I wouldn't take any defenseman over Makar but Hughes isn't far behind for sure,& has had the significantly weaker supporting cast in Vancouver.
But with all the awards they have though-why does the NHL not have a defenseman version of the Selke? Nothing to do with pts -but the best defensive dman. Still give the Norris to the Makars or Hughes as basically the dman MVP. But there should be some type of Scott Stevens,Adam Foote or somebody like that-given out to the best guy defensively/PK regardless of points which neither Makar or Hughes would win. I don't know who you'd name it after but somebody like a Stevens,Foote,or somebody of that ilk in NHL history. Keep in mind-i didn't start following the NHL closely til the AVS came to Denver in 1995 when I was 19. I know a lot about NHL history since 1995 but not tons before.(though still more than the average casual NHL fan) Maybe a Larry Robinson or even Nick Lindstrom? As great as Lindstrom was offensively-his defense with his stick was other worldly. I don't know but but somebody smarter than me about NHL distant history could come up with somebody in history to name it after.
