Honestly without Marner his numbers are going to drop
Not a chance ๐๐๐๐๐๐
Not a chance ๐๐๐๐
Leadership is not just one player
NOT a good defensive player, and not a leader. Give the "C" back to Tavarres.
Me ether Montreal will win the Stanley Cup before the leafโs will
Marner has a better chance at a Cup than Matthews.
Oui ๐
No. Is he a good enough player to win a Cup? Yes. Obviously. Kyle Okposo wasn't better then Matthews when he won a Cup. It's the fact he's not good enough in his role to win a Cup. I dont believe he will ever have a good enough team to win a Stanley Cup as a #1 Center. His play declines too much. He'd either need to win when he declines to a 2C in his mid 30s on a good contender, takes another big jump in his game, or just changes his game which none of that I see happening.
This is my opinion as a die hard leafs fan. I believe myself with marner leaving the leafs are gonna show that depth in forwards wins. Now are they gonna win the cup? Yea hell no that's not happening. But the moves we made this year is at least baby steps. Matthews can be a franchise level player when he's healthy. Only issue is he's injury prone and can't get it done in the playoffs. We will see how he works with new players like Macceli but overall I see the leafs winning a round maybe even 2.
I share your same opinion, and question management's decision to make him captain, just because he was the top scorer. That said, he COULD grow into the role. We don't see his behind the scenes leadership, but he's not great with the media. Better than he was, though. In the early days he was a horrible interviewee.
