  1. Mario is, in my opinion, the greatest hockey player of all time. If he were gifted the amount of time in his career that many others had, his numbers would be even more insane. Sid passing Mario as the franchises all-time scorer is a fantastic accomplishment, and takes nothing away from Mario. It will be a great moment for Sid and I will be very happy for him when it happens. And I suspect Mario will be even more happy than I.

  2. Sid is to the younger generation what Mario is to us late 80s and 90s fans.

Today's game is much more high scoring than during Mario's day, Mario delt with the 2 line pass, cancer, bad back, etc. Same reason I wasnt overly impressed with Ovi breaking Gretzky's goal record. When half your goals are a 1 timer from the right dot versus a player who had to overcome 2 line pass and dead puck era, it just doesnt hit as hard. The way the game was played before the 2003 lockout, before the salary cap, etc cant even be compared to the olden days.

Really should be 2 different record books. 1 for the old times who had completely different rules and style of play, and a current post salary cap instalation set of records

  3. Mario will always be the greatest player in Pittsburgh history regardless of who takes his point lead no one can I do the greatness that he is

  4. Mario is the greatest 1:1 talent ever in the NHL. But he was never near the complete 2 way player that Sid is. That's ok. Even when Sid passes Mario in points, he'll still be player 1A in team history. That's ok and we've been blessed to have them both….along with Jagr.

  5. its okay if he passes Mario. Mario may still be the GOAT but Sid will be right behind him, the best player of the modern age. Mario did things Sid will never do, and vice versa.

  6. Records are made to be broken.
    Richards and Rosses are huge.
That said I personally look at per game numbers. Crosby will be #1 in the Penguins record books in a lot of categories but he will never be the #1 player in Penguins history. 66

Just a personal note. That is why Ovechkin’s goal record is amazing.

  7. Good Morning DK, (to quote the legendary, late Stan Savran) “Love the show!” My question is about Dan Muse. What sort of identity, different from Sully, do you think he’ll bring to the Penguins roster? And Dubas sorta used the phrase with Sullivan that usually coaches don’t make it to the other side of a rebuild, do you envision Muse making it to the next era of Penguins hockey?

  8. It has NO impact about how Mario is seen. Mario is the GOAT of hockey and of the Pens. There are no doubts that 66 is the face of the Pens forever!!

  9. Unfortunately, with injuries suppressing Lemieux's career totals (as absurd as they still are), there are people who didn't get to see him play, that have no idea just how ridiculously good he was. I remember a few years ago talking with some guy in his early 20's. The topic of greatest goal scorer ever came up, and this guy didn't have Mario on his list. Flabbergasted, I asked how he didn't have Mario in there, and he said something along the lines of, "Well, Lemieux was a playmaker, not a goal scorer."

NO! I had to explain to the guy how that whole playmaker vs. finisher thing, while typically valid, didn't apply to Lemieux. He was both. And this guy didn't have any ax to grind, as far as I could tell. He genuinely had no idea Lemieux was just behind Mike Bossy in G/GP, and way ahead of everyone in G/GP for anyone who'd played around 1,000 games.

And all this just accentuates the point. I haven't even mentioned Crosby yet. But this is just a weird instance where the disparity is that big. Sid might be Top 5 all-time… and he's still not as good as Lemieux. That's nothing to be ashamed of, or a reason to diminish anything Sid's done. Lemieux was just born on Krypton or something.

  10. If Mario didn't have health issues, Ovechkin would still be chasing him for the goal record.

I can't wait to see Sid pass Mario, and I hope they soon draft someone who, 20 years later we're talking about passing Sid.

  11. I see it as it is and who was Sid's Mentor. It just falls hand in hand. One doesn't leave the other behind. It will be a great time, because the legacy of Mario lives on. Thank you DK, as always another excellent show.

  12. I think for people of a certain age, like you and myself, it's very weird to see him pass Mario, but what's crazier is that Sid is 163 points away from tying Gordie Howe, and unless Sid hits his wall this year or next, it's very likely he passes that.
