The Love of Surfing: Growing Up With a Pro Surfer Dad

sterling i feel like both of us we grew up our dad was a professional server so it was put on us y’all have to be the next thing and it’s like you almost forget about the joy of surfing because it’s like I need to be someone i need to be like my dad i need to be Yansy Spencer 3 i need to be bigger you Everyone came up to us you have big shoes to fill everywhere we went and you’re named after him like I couldn’t imagine the shoes people are telling you to fill and then now we’re getting older and we we we surf because we love it and it’s like if we could have had that at the beginning i think those are the lessons we’ve learned through life the connection with God through serving you know that’s what saved us the whole time and that’s what was the reward the whole time

  1. Yea but that is a pretty small price to pay to end up surviving doing this. Imagine how many surfers have had to beg. The only one preventing you from enjoying surfing as you should is your mind set. Forget that your being pressured and just do it. So many would kill to get paid to surf. Just be thankful and keep in mind that even though it ain't perfect at times it is a super small price to pay.

  2. Growing up near a beautiful beach with just the right climate and conditions to produce swells worth surfing is a blessing in itself. I used to beg my parents to quit their jobs and let’s move to the beach 😂

  3. The bloated EGO it take to name your kids after yourself not once but twice ??? 🤦🏼‍♂️✨

  4. You may not have had the journey that your father planned for you, but I promise he was up in heaven smiling during this episode. You've found your Inner Light, and you're helping others find theirs.

  5. I had big shoes to fill as well,
    Not because of the shadow
My cast bu because my brothers
Hand me downs were 3 sizes to big.

  6. I appreciate the laughs, but getting vulnerable and sharing insight like this hit home. Thanks bros 🤙🏼

  7. Thank you for sharing this story gentlemen.. my Dad taught me to surf at a young age… I’m still learning 😂, but I love it as much now in my mid 50s .. my Dad passed 9 years ago and we put his ashes in the ocean ~ the place he loved and every time I’m out in the lineup; I feel he’s with me ..
    🇦🇺☀️🏄‍♂️💦🏄‍♂️💦❤️☮️♒️

  8. I grew up with two guys in New Brighton this happened too.
Jeremy Byles and especially Matt Smith(god rest his soul). I remember Smithy doing moves that blew Slater’s mind.

  9. I like the caveman transient look at the end. I saw a guy the other day eating fries outa the McDonald’s trash can and had the same look

  10. Yancy Sr. is watching from heaven and is extremely proud of all of you. He loved Jesus and his family above all. As a Pensacola native I'm thankful we had such an incredible soul touch so many lives in our community. We love you guys too!

  11. Ugh these comments, many folks not getting it. I see some very talented kids here on my home break with their aging surfer parents living vicariously through them. It's like any intrinsic motivation they have for surfing is getting taken away right in front of your eyes, getting replaced by extrinsic motivation from their parents. If they keep surfing and ENJOY IT, it'll be DESPITE their dads fr. Don't be like that to kids, let them be their own people who deserve love and attention without fulfilling YOUR dreams.

  12. That’s how I connect with God, me and my Son go share some waves by ourselves on the reef. There’s nothing like it.

  13. If I were his dad I would told him "just enjoy surfing, forget about the rest" for the very beggining, because thats what really matter
