If you wanted to truly align a gm with a hc, you should have fired Poles at the end of last season, then told Ben, "we are planning hiring you…who do you want as gm?" Then hired that gm, and then had that gm interview and hire Johnson. There was no need to rush to extend poles, make him earn it and show you at least by the end of this next season that he deserves it.
With TWO top 10 picks, Poles SHOULD have spread the wealth on BOTH sides of the football at two premium positions. The Caleb pick was the correct/obvious one. Rome was yet another luxury pick that would have been better used on Jared Verse (pass rusher). Bears already had two quality wides. They needed a rusher. HUGE MISS.
The Bears were not only in last place, again, last year but they also had the worst culture in all of the NFL. They absolutely imploded last year. The only justification for this is they must really like the guy, and he's still young enough to grow into the position. 5 years is a bit much but it does align with Ben Johnson's contract. The two of them have some familiarity from Boston College so maybe they decided they wanted to be a package deal and that's one of the main reasons they landed Ben Johnson.
