Why Toronto’s Future Is More PROMISING Than You Think

The Toronto Maple Leafs future is in question… but let’s breakdown why this may not be a bad thing. After years of coming up short with this rendition of the team, Toronto now has a new look following their playoff exit and trade with Mitch Marner. For the first time in a while the Leafs have reconstructed how they’ve built their roster and have space to bring in new talent and give young prospects the chance to take on bigger roles. But are the Leafs worse off without Marner? Or will they break their previous allegations as chokers and finally take the next step? Let’s talk about it. 1. This was honestly on Marner and Matthews I know people talk about pressure but when you're on that team and getting that money you HAVE to perform. There is really no excuse for how bad theyve been. Its on the players, plain and simple. The fans deserve better.

  2. Matthews is not now nor has he ever been a top player in the post season. That is not going to change. I know Toronto media and fans give him a pass but you know the players as well as the rest of the league knows it.

  3. The Leafs have used the extra cap space to make some good moves. Maccelli and Joshua are bets that may be big hits for them. Forcing Vegas into a corner and getting Roy instead of losing Marner for nothing. Even getting Laughton at the trade deadline at 50% Retention should pay off after he gets a training camp into him. The D-Core is solid and has been locked up in a way that they didn't lose anyone important and didn't have to way overpay on the blue line like everybody else had to this offseason. They've got an excellent goal tending tandem. There is a lot to be excited about, they will probably take a step back and may even be a wildcard team, but they should make the playoffs regardless of the lack of Marner.

  4. I think that the team will regress for sure. I think the expectation is to win a round or two if we really earn it. This is the year the team has a small amount of grace with the roster situation

  5. Their perfect Marner replacement is in Colorado rn, Necas. Leafs need to be monitoring that, Necas isn’t a natural fit with MacKinnon. In my eyes, a 6”3 playmaker is perfect for a Matthews/Toronto team that is actively trying to get bigger and harder to play against. He’s a defensive regression from Marner as it stands, but he contributes in other ways. He throws slightly more hits, is better at taking faceoffs which is always handy for a wing. If he doesn’t re-up in Colorado, he’s an interesting watch.

  6. I think the leafs have something in Mattias Maccelli. He’s 24 and he has alot of potential that wasn’t going to be realized in Utah. A diamond in the rough that could have a great year playing in the top 6 with guys who can put the puck in the net is lofty but at the same time could bode well for his confidence or the media & fans bury him alive, this comes from a panthers fan

  7. Mitch is a takented player. He is not a leader. He doesn't have (yet) what it takes. He will NEVER be a SID BUT.. he could be a Stevey Y or a Bunaby Joe.

  8. I honestly thought Toronto was going to get reverse swept. The fact they went onto the next round with confidence baffles me. I'm a sens fan, but Toronto should have mopped the floor with Ottawa in 4, not barely make itnout alive in 7. Ottawa didnt make it easy, but if Toronto struggled that much against Ottawa with a stacked roster, I doubt they would fare better in a rematch. Ottawa is a year wiser and are walking back the same team. Some young guys could take big steps and be difference makers when it counts. Toronto shed Marners cap hit for more depth. It might just pay off for them, or they are also walking back a similar team minus 100 points. Interesting to see for sure

  9. This is a very different Toronto…. They could make shockwaves next post season or regress back to a first round exit team

  10. Marner did next to nothing in the playoffs and had one foot out the door since 2023. I don't see him as a loss at all.

  11. Better hope Matthews is healthy day 1 and can stay that way all season otherwise they may be a 3 seed or even a wild card team this year without Marners regular season points. 2 of the 4 wins in round 1 were in OT and 1 was handed to them on a gold platter with the officials in game 1 not even being close to objective that night.

  12. Man I’m happy I don’t have to here the saying the Core four ever again in my life. They are all great players but I think they were overvalued because they are on Toronto and even though they are all fire at some point in the season they have not proven themselves in playoff hockey so there value shouldn’t be as high imo.

  13. Until Matthews is gone or is in a reduced role they’re not winning anything
    He’s no leader
He doesn’t show up in the playoffs like prime Kane Crosby or even Ovi

They need to build around nylander

  14. Regular season regression is inevitable, they won’t win their division this year. But the depth they’ve added with the Marner cap space will improve their playoff chances. They might still get knocked out in the first or second round, but I don’t see them having blowup losses like games 5 and 7 against Florida.

  15. The team is worse than it was and that team wasn't good enough. So we are on the downward limb of this team's development curve. The big question mark is what injury did Matthews have this year that saw him leaving midseason for germany only allowing him to play 67 games and score 33 goals or 40 goals if he can play 82 games. Is he healthy? He turns 28 this September. If he is not the 65 goal 100 point Matthews the team is much worse than it was.
The very few prospects they have left have to hit immediately and be contributors.
They got 74 starts from their two goalies. Probably need a third veteran in case.
I like the Macelli add and Im sure Roy will be fine.
I like the Joshua add but again the Leafs are looking for a lot of bounce back years.
They have 2$ million in cap space and a set of forwards in Robertson, Jarnkrok, Domi, Kampf, McMann who have little to no trade value and earn $12 million.

Probably need a dedicated offensive defenseman.

  16. The coping is crazy. Marner was a key piece. Y’all are crazy thinking the team will be better off without. Marner made that team.

  17. This is the most optimistic I have felt about the Leafs since the MTL series. Since firing Dubas to keep the core 4 I’ve gone into the season waiting for implosion. Not because I liked Dubas but because it showed leadership had no clue what the issue was like when buying out Grabo to sign Clarkson, the lowest pt of that era. Beating OTT means nothing. They were the worst team they have faced in the playoffs in the Matthews era, sorry OTT. Its just true, you lost to the leafs. Last year was not a success in any way. It was the same crap while their best player was injured, an atrocious coaching hire and a team sulk waiting to leave.

  18. If a player wants more money or equal pay to Barkov they are not worth it if you have 2 guys each taking over 10 million and hve done nothing in playoffs your team is screwed hell crosby get 9 million no player on leafs or Edmonton are better than Barkov and crosby cups dont lie
