If I Was GM: How the Edmonton Oilers Could Have Kept Dylan Holloway & Philip Broberg

What if YOU were the general manager of the Edmonton Oilers? On today’s episode of Locked On Oilers, host Nick Zararis takes you through a detailed “what-if” scenario for the summer of 2024 and how the Oilers could have avoided losing Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.

We break down how poor roster management, offer sheet missteps, and short-term thinking cost Edmonton two young, cost-controlled players. From Ken Holland’s lame-duck final season to Jeff Jackson’s interim stint and Stan Bowman’s arrival, we cover the decisions that shaped the Oilers’ future.

Nick walks through the alternative moves he would have made including passing on Jeff Skinner and Victor Arvidsson, keeping Holloway and Broberg, and restructuring the bottom six plus how these choices could have impacted Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and the Oilers’ Stanley Cup window.

  1. i don't want to watch this video. the subject matter sucks too much. we know holloway was a straight up match.

  2. I think the Islanders are better off than the Penguins. But I'd trust literally anyone as GM over Dubas, so there's that.

Panarin to the Oilers is pretty juicy; I have no clue how they would pull off that blockbuster.

  3. Ironically you didn't bring up actual situations that are directly relevant.

Ken only gave 2 sloppy contracts in 24 and that was for Nurse,

Campbell Contract Was a Disaster and waste of 5.4 million in wasted cap space made even worse by giving him away for free then carrying his salary over 5 years .

Nurse’s demands because of his ties to McDrama, extorted ken into signing him to an eight-year, The $9.25 million cap hit

    $74 million deal.

There was a package deal in play to skim certain players cap, to allow keeping Mcloud and others , but McDrama nixed that in

order for his favourites to get rewarded even if unwarranted , so they left and now hate edmonton because of that.

Good players lost again because of didn't get protection under mcdrama click group .

Jackson brought in to Temp GM , Mcdrama's previous Agent , what could go wrong there other than more Mcdrama control , internally .

Broburg, was a threat to Bouchard so Mcdrama picked personal favourite so was let go .

Holloway was on the path of potentially overshadowing Mcdrama

Others who got sacrificed due to the mcdrama click group ostracization and push out or players wanting out of the mcdrama control as was unbearable in locker room because of him.

Brown, Kane, Perry , J.Skinner, McLoud, Ryan, and so many others .

ALL WILL BE CLEAR This SEASON AS OILERS FAIL HORRIBLY AND MISS PLAYOFFS AS, FORMER PLAYERS THAT GOT PUSHED OUT SHINE, PROVING ALL WERE MISTAKES To LET THEM GO.

And LOSING MCDRAMA ANYWAY NEXT YEAR ANYWAY BECAUSE OF HIS DRAMA For Him To BAIL IN SPITE .
WATCH IT'S WRITTEN ON THE WALL , You will SEE . SUCKS BUT IT IS WHAT THEY MADE HAPPEN .

  4. Oil were Cup or Bust…. Management chose to go with the mature Plyers with NHL reputations that already had relationships with the Reffs…Oil tried to pad the Roster with experienced seasoned Vets less likely to cheat or get to excited and awe-struck and take penalties….. this was a major decision and as with all NHL decisions a price tag was stuck to it, the young Bucks were Player Asset currency and were used exactly like that, choose to feel how you may about the management call but thats the skinny on it. Keeping the Kids meant planning beyond the 2-Kings tenure which is still in its prime, Oilers cannot do anything except buy the exact supports specific to Mcdavid and the current State of Affairs .Everybody is All-In now. Lets kep perspective here ok, if you happen upon a Generational level offensive Superstar basic Fan logic tells you that your next buy has to be a top Goalie, then a Top D-man, then a Side-kick to draw heat away from the Superstar, then just fill in the blanks. See what we did there? Oilers have the Stud they have the D-Man and they have the Side-kick then crickets… now you can see what we did here right? No naming names,no blame game, just observations and educated guesses.
