The Most UNCOMMON NHL Legend We’ve Ever Seen

The Most UNCOMMON NHL Legend We’ve Ever Seen
You’ve heard of athletes who swear by kale shakes, cryo-tanks, and 6 a.m. yoga. Phil Kessel isn’t one of them.

The man who owns the NHL’s all-time Iron-Man streak has a weakness for hot-dogs, jokes his way through media scrums, and once played a single shift while his wife was in labor—just to keep his streak alive.

He’s eight points shy of 1,000, holds three Stanley Cup rings, and somehow still can’t land a contract as of this season. If you think your daily habits are odd, wait till you meet the legend who breaks every hockey stereotype yet keeps rewriting the record book.

  1. Say what you want about Kessel, but his teammates loved him and that has to stand for something. Toronto could use some 3rd line scoring. I say bring the thrill back.

  2. Loved him in Toronto, especially when he stuck up for Dion. Love him still. Funny as hell, all around good guy and super talented!

  3. PHIL LEAVES – GETS CUPS, KADRI LEAVES – GETS A CUP…. MARNER LEAVES??? SEE THE PATTERN?

  4. As a Bruins fan, I was pretty pissed when they traded Kessel to the Leafs…I got over it when they went on to win the cup a few years later though. 😉😁

  5. Great story telling. I wish more effort was put into matching the footage on the screen with the commentary. You had all the elements but their order was all over the place.

  6. Loved kessel, I was a huge fan of his, 3 cups after leaving the toxic Toronto media was a beautiful thing! Being from Toronto also love seeing other former leafs win the cup especially Kadri!!!

  7. Pens got rid of him and the team was dog shit after. Kessel was the reason they won 2 cups in a row

  8. Saw him in Vegas in 2013 at The Mirage. He was with his folks and sister, and I’d had a few pops so I walked over to their table and congratulated him on his great season. He was really nice, and then his Mom says “Oh thank you so much for coming over to say hi to Phil! He’s been so upset that we’ve been here for 3 days, and nobody’s recognized him!”
Phil turned to her, and in an exasperated and nasally Minny accent yells “Mmooooooooomm!!” like some mortified teenager. He’s a good dude.

  9. Canucks could have used Phil in a bottom six roll. Their management was stupid to no offer him a league minimum contract.

  10. He was signed by Van for a tryout and it seems his conditioning ended him. If he was serious about a comeback, he shoulda done more to impress management. I follow the Abbotsford Canucks and his few vids through camp showed an exhausted, uninspired ex-hockey player. He blazed his own trail, don’t feel bad for him…

  11. Imagine playing in 1,064 games in a row, putting up points every year, winning 3 stanely cups, among other accolades and still no one respects you enough to sign you…

  12. A good hockey player is not a legend. Even a great hockey player is not a legend. The top ten players of all time might no considered legends. Might. Kessel is nowhere near the top ten. Not in the top 100 in goals. Not in the top 100 in assists. Not in the top 100 points. And the list does not include a number of Hall of fame defensemen and goalies who would rank higher than Kessel.
