It's the Battle of Alberta, which has been very quiet for a while until this year. These 2 teams hate each other with a passion. The funny thing is that both goalies used to play for the opposite teams a year ago. Kassian of the Oilers had taken some nasty hits from the Flames Tkachuk who then proceeded to turtle when Kassian had enough of his hits and wanted some payback. This was a much anticipated game and probably one of the best games in over a decade.

when talbot engaged he was the 6th man in. it was a 6 v 5. Smith had to come to at least the centerline to issue the challenge to Talbot. and good for talbs to answer. Smith (by the code) could/should have gone the whole way to engage. to even the odds. but would have been penalized. its a fine example of the beauty of hockey.

This is the battle of Alberta. Both cities are separated by 2.5 hours, the straightest, most boring highway you will travel.
Edmonton and Calgary have a rivalry. In every category. This particular rivalry goes back to the 80s.
The goalie can’t cross Center Ice. He’ll skate up and wait for the other goalie. Once the other goalie skates up, all bets are off. They grab each other’s jerseys to control the player and tie up his punching hand.

Number one rule in hockey, always protect your goalie. If anyone from the opposing team lays a hand on your tender you let them know by swinging at them.
When the goalie skates out to centre line he is basically calling out the other goalie.
The indication for a fight is when they throw their gloves down. Or “drop their mitts”.

Goalies are not allowed to cross the center line in a fight. If they do they get fined and suspended. But if the opposing goalie comes out to challenge at the same time it’s fucking go time!!! I love it

The coolest thing about this fight is that Mike Smith was traded for Cam Talbot right before the season started. Smitty had an amazing year but calgary wanted a younger netmeinder. add on the fact that chucky was picking on Kassian made this years battle of Alberta epic.

I live in Edmonton, but I had gotten tickets to this game, because I was going to be in Calgary at the time. When I was at the game it was insane!! It wasn’t a good time to be cheering for the Oilers that night.
