And so we enter the final day of Torre de Hercules 2025, we have some 4 bouts give or take with swords we don’t practice at the club (it’s just two bouts of messer).
“I met Oskar back in Swiss Blades 2018, and sadly enough we didn’t get to fence then.
Fast forward 7 years and we finally did something, even if that something is not entirely up my alley. It took me a while to realise I could use the little things I know of Dussack and apply it here, but until that happened I was just doing military sabre with a shorter sword. The lack of reach is really showing, as is the parries that would often work, not really working at all here.
Oskar was tough, I’m not used to people closing in and going for grappling so I also had to adapt to that new reality.
Turns out messers don’t hit as hard as I initially thought, but you can still see pretty clearly one hit that dented my mesh, still annoyed at Leon Paul but if they say it’s for the best… it better be!
I do feel back about all the doubles in this bout and in the next one, but we talked about it after and I did feel slightly better about it as well. Hopefully next time we meet we’ll even the playing field and try something like longsword? Let’s just hope it doesn’t take 7 years again.” – Rui
Tomorrow we’ll have another messer bout, stay tuned for that one!

I love Oskar! Cool to see two gents I follow fencing like this.
Great bout! Nice to see you Rui with a different weapon. I think that you go for the tercie guard very low as in saber, but with the messer i find septime (pogen) or high tierce (tag) better.
Anyway, great fencing and hope to see you on am event someday.
Have you ever tried eskrima?
The messer GOAT! Great sparring guys 🙂
