JJ PETERKA TRADED TO UTAH | Instant Reaction & Analysis
buffalo Sabres fans I am so sorry Ladies and gentlemen welcome Breaking news in the National Hockey League as JJ Peterka has been traded from the Buffalo Sabres to the Utah Mammoth in what if you’re seeing already the the um the thumbnail of this video I would describe as a fleece So looking at the details right here for you let’s get into it right away Already some comments coming in in the chat Golden Gamer agreeing with the title of this video Didn’t expect JJ going to Utah Solid a young piece for the Mammoth Could be a great team in a few years Absolutely Certainly fun on franchise mode Yes absolutely JJ Perka going to the Utah Mammoth with a contract extension in place in exchange for just two pieces Michael Kessler Ring and Josh Don Now let me first say that I am a very very much a Michael Kessle Ring truther I’m a big fan of Kessle Ring I think Yeah I just realized there’s there’s an extension in place too This past season really opened my eyes to Michael Kessle Ring and I think people are sleeping on him Josh Don another piece that we’ll talk about in just a moment Two good pieces Let’s not mistake that Let’s not allow these two players to be washed away by the trade that they’re involved in Okay I’ve said my piece Now the Sabres got absolutely hosed in this deal as they get Kessle Ring and Don for Perka Before we even talk about them let’s talk about JJ Pekka here JJ Perka let’s pull it up right here A young dynamic rushing winger who does almost all his damage in transition has a ton of skill and plenty of upside but is not an attentive defender and could stand to round out his offensive game All right that’s nice Cool So Peter 76th percentile of even strength offense over the last three years according to weighted average data Obviously those three years include a rookie season a sophomore year and then his most recent season his third year wherein he scored 68 points in 77 games More on that in a moment He’s in the 91st percentile of goals as his shooting was incredible this past season He draws a lot of penalties He plays against good levels of competition with high levels of teammates His finishing is very high as well His value skyrocketed in 2324 and still stayed high enough around that 70 to 75th percentile in 2024 25 The finishing has been great The offense has been steady The defense did drop off Before I read more on Peter I just want to say there’s a stat here I wanted to quickly highlight He had the highest five on five on ice shooting percentage ever recorded this season at 14.7% So 5v5 on ice shooting percentage So no special teams or anything He’s a good player but you have to factor that into his production because he’s going to regress big time says J Fresh He’s also a pure rusher so power play glow up is no guarantee So let’s not go too crazy on who JJ Perka is Let’s also understand that this is not just who he is as a player This is who he is at 23 years old 23 years old So JJ Peter going to Utah with an extension in place They have over 20 million cap space That’s no problem for them the Buffalo Sabres I don’t know if he’s already going to be gone right here Uh yes he was here So the Sabres had the money to sign him They had over 23 million available to them They could have kept JJ Peter but now what are the Sabres trying to do Are they going back into another rebuild What The guy’s 23 and a half He’s your second round pick from 2020 He just had a a 68 point season He’s eating big minutes as a 20 whatever we said three-year-old 18 minutes per night scoring at that rate 15.6 shooting percentage XYZ blah blah blah and you’re trading him when his value has just jumped to its highest I would say not just in his point production but also relatively high or in the highest category of his of what he does in terms of providing wins to your team and in his micro stats just this past year wherein he scored 68 points the 64th percentile of even strength and wins above replacement okay I get it the second percentile of the defense that’s not going to be his calling card That’s not the hallmark of his game Power play was low whatever But that finishing in the 90th percentile that’s probably the one that scares people the most that oh is it as sustainable and whatever Who cares Who cares about sustainability when the guy is scoring like that at the age of 23 let him figure it out and then judge him Not to say anyone’s judging I’m just saying in theory finishing is not the one that you look at the most when it’s for a younger player Maybe it’s just a flash in the pan type season Regardless I’m seeing a lot of comments in the chat I’ll get to it in a moment 85th percentile of goals in 2425 Um chances sorry let me just go through the top ones Shots 81st Rush shots 91st High danger passes 93rd Chance assists 88th Rush offense 86th Now what is he not doing super well Exiting the zone hits for check involvement stuff that might not ever come along super well But again for like the fourth time he’s 23 just had his third season always on bad Buffalo teams What is the rush to trade him Unless there’s some guarantee that you know he’s not signing though you have his RFA rights If you know he’s not signing and you need to trade him okay I get it But could there have not been a better package than Michael Kessle ring and Josh Don If he wanted out I get it So that’s what Real Deal Prime is saying here Buffalo Sabres fan JJ wanted it out Adams will say “We don’t want players who don’t want to be here.” That’s how he’s going to justify it And that’s fine If you need to feel some for some reason forced that he needs to be out because of internal XYZ we don’t know about that So fine he needs to go out get him out But that’s your return And you couldn’t have again I don’t know what the situation was but you couldn’t have figured it out behind closed doors A 23-year-old who just went close to point per game in his third season You could have tried to figure out more than that So let’s let me look through some of the comments here Yeah extension coming in We’re seeing that soon Sabres Fleece Uh yes Josh Don also involved with an extension in play Come on now says Golden Gamer Throw in the fourth overall pick at this point Maybe with Buffalo giving you nine as Hobsy said in the Discord Yeah Why why could the Sabres not have said “Okay Utah give us four we’ll give you nine and we you know you’ll drop five picks and you get JJ Pa could that have not been involved as well?” I’m I’m sure they explored it And I’m sure don’t get me wrong they’re not in common in Buffalo I’m sure they asked for it but if Arizona says no what’s the pressure to do it today Why must you do it on June 25th and not July 1st or whatever else Why must it happen now and feel a rush to take a return that isn’t especially inspiring Not great JJ a stud Um what are the Savers doing They’re losing every good player They lost the Cousins trade and now they lost the Perka for not good enough return as well Does this lower the price for Marco Rossi I don’t think so because positional scarcity also comes into play if he could be a team’s top six centerman that really goes into thing the calculations for GMs a little bit differently there Ta Thompson there you go so Buffalo you’re ready for T go to Buffalo for liel and peak I don’t know how much is the how of excuse me how much of a fire sale is it going to be castle ring is great for the Sabres yes but not at this pricey saying JJ wanted out it seems so I get it at the same time they should have gotten more 100% agreed Adams probably wanted a hockey trade over futures But if this is all you can get take the futures and flip them Exactly If you need the quote hockey trade because you want the roster players and whatever and other teams are only offering you picks and prospects fine But could you have not factored that into a three-team deal or some separate deal after where you get the prospects and picks keep some flip others the in just in pure trade value There had there had to have been a better offer for JJ Perka Not the needs the pure value Disappointing Sabres got fleece Yes I like Don Castler as players I think they’ll be fine for Buffalo That being said yikes That’s exactly what I’m saying No don’t give me any Andrew Peak slander McDavid for Peak would be a win for the Oilers Yeah What was that trade So that’s more on Peter Let’s break down who the Sabres are getting Let’s at least if it’s going to be brutal it’s at least to have a little bit of a smile on our faces or joy in our hearts to some degree if I’m a Sabres fan So Michael Kessler very underrated 25-year-old former sixth round pick who really came into his own this past year 29 points in 82 games with Utah And look at the minutes that he was playing as well 1741 You might think “Oh he’s not playing 22.” He’s playing 1741 That’s a solid like I am pencled into that second pair rule type of minutes You’re not playing the big power play or maybe the most penalty kill but you’re playing big minutes per night Some nights upwards of 18 minutes in a single hockey game He had even Calder votes in 23-24 So he had a good year in 2324 don’t get me wrong but really came into his own in 2425 I think in terms of league recognition a little bit more And when you look at that value jump to 2425 it’s exactly what I’m saying So Michael Kessle Ring acquired by Buffalo is a middle pairing two-way defender who shoots the puck a ton Not a pred predigious puck mover but not bad in that regard either Big at 6’5 And while he’s not a massive hitter he does drop the glove sometimes So if Kessle Ring comes in and Bow and Byron’s moving out I don’t want to see the return that’s going to be coming here for Bowen Oh my goodness So Kessle Ring over the last three years of weighted average data but really just the past two seasons because the season before that was just nine games played So really threw us 156 games in the National Hockey League 43rd percentile of projected wins above replacement 58th of even strength offense 54th of even strength defense Goals 78th primary assists 93rd but again that’s a bit inflated because he had just 22 assists I say just that’s a good number but it’s not like he’s in the 93rd percentile because he has 65 assists It’s just weighted average data among defensemen Doesn’t draw a lot of penalties but did play against higher levels you know average levels of competition He’s not playing against the worst matchups He’s playing against average levels of competition against the teams that are uh against Buffalo night in and night out And his teammates around him aren’t that great So that tells you that what he’s doing is even more impressive So his value offensively above the 50th percentile has been consistent the last couple years but defense jumping from that like 25th percentile to just above the 75th percentile So that’s awesome So Kessle Ring goes to Buffalo as well as Josh Don Here he is a young two-way winger I’m surprised that um Shane Don’s organization traded him Josh Done acquired by Buffalo is a young two-way winger with a high motor and promising passing skills who put up very strong underlying numbers but few goals in a fourthline role with Utah last season So Josh Don a former sector pick in 2021 Really good numbers in the AHL 46 and 62 and 23-24 26 and 28 and 24-25 in a fullish time role in 2425 in Utah He scored 19 points in 51 games Keep in mind like we just said the role that he was in So he’s playing you know some nights I remember I had him in fantasy at some nights because he was playing some big minutes towards the end of the year You know look at the 16 and a half minutes 12 13 minutes In the end he averaged 1331 of ice time So he didn’t do badly in that regard And by the way the Peter extension let’s just get the details on this one It’s 5 by 7.7 Yes 5 years at 7.7 million That’s crazy Grab says this trade almost entirely depends on what Josh Don becomes We know who Peter and Keller Ling are but Don feels like he’s barely scratched the surface of his potential especially without any other pieces or picks going back He needs to pop for Buffalo to not get robbed here Very well said So Peter signed on 5 years at 7.7 That’s a very reasonable contract and yet bang on with that tweet Very well said But I don’t think as much as I want to have all the love in my heart for Josh Don I would be I’d be surprised if he becomes more than a third liner and I think Buffalo can say we are we’re lucky to have him if he could be a second liner for us someday And even if that happens are you content with a second pair D and a second line forward for a guy who could be a firstline winger like a point per game produ uh producer I don’t know Hard to say so much in the future but here right now right now in the in when the trade has been made Yikes Take a look at take a look at Pagnata’s last tweet when you can I get what he’s saying but it’s definitely not what Buffalo fans want to hear Sure Let’s check out what Dave Pagnata has to say A solid move for both sides for the Sabres This is a quality move that they’ve been aiming to do Talent for talent And don’t get me wrong there is talent for talent being moved here Michael Kessle Ring is a good piece for the Buffalo Sabres And Josh Don who knows what he’s going to become So if Josh Don in the 43rd percentile in his like 50 games of NHL action 84th of offense 95th of defense that’s great If he can do this now on a larger scale he’s already 23 So it’s not like I don’t want to call him old just yet but he’s you know Peter’s 23 and look what he’s doing So they swap 23-year-old forward for 23-year-old forward And they also get a 25-year-old defenseman who if we look at his contract Kessle Ring is signed on for just one more year at 1.4 million before he himself is also an RFA Josh Don also signed on for one more year before he’s an RFA So JJ Prero who’s now signed at 5 by 7.7 for Utah If we refresh here so Utah had 20.357 now they’re at 14.982 as they have Peter signed on for 7.7 It’ll be an expiring UFA in 2030 but that’s fine Your next three years here in Utah the next three years guaranteed Perka Keller Gunther Sergeev Derzy Mata Vamela on top of whoever else you’re going to resign obviously of course um Logan Culie XYZ but that’s what’s going on in Utah There is so much to be excited about for the Mammoth Meanwhile the Buffalo Sabres go from 23.2 in cap space now 20.881 with money going in and out Now if you look at the depth chart for the Buffalo Sabres you see okay Josh Don is he even in there I don’t think so Is Castlevang in here either Hold on Is he not Was this not updated yet My apologies Uh C No he’s here Nichol So Dene Power Samuelson Connor uh sorry Connor Clifton Kessle Ring and let’s say Bryson/ Bernard Docker and Byron is going to be traded out So Kessle Ring instantly becomes a top four defenseman for you And then for your forwards Norris Thompson hold on let’s go Now we can look at death chart though Benson Norris Thompson Zuker Kulik Kulich Koulik I’ve heard both Jack Quinn Alex Tu So the top six is still survivable Excuse me Survivable Put Quinn on the left wing and bring Tuck to the second line Your third line becomes Greenway Mloud and Zucker though Then Krebs Laferdy It’s not horrible but still today Paterka out Kessle Ring and Don in You need to hope on Don progressing and developing And that’s going to be a two or three year um project at minimum Meanwhile Kessle Ring is good but is he the big change on the right side to the defense that Byum out and Kessle Ring in will fix that Let’s check some of the thoughts here in the comments Yeah Yeah It’s not that bad of a trade in terms of did they get NHL talent In terms of value as nice goes on to say I think they would have gotten more Yeah If we just go by value for value did they get talent Did they get things that they need Did they fill um are they going to get are did they get useful players Yes Was it equivalent value No I like Don a lot says Hobsy and could see him being middle six but they had to get more plain and simple Yeah Hard to say more than that right Uh fraud Sarali beating the fake insider allegations Still can’t stand him Look at Don’s 11ame run in 2324 He has shown huge potential too Not Perka potential though Yes So it’s not that Don can’t do it It’s that you’re betting on him doing it in one or two plus years when Peter was doing it now And when does Buffalo need it Now It’s my talent and I need it now Jay Birdie long time no see Buffalo Sabres fan I am utterly disgusted says Jay Birdie Uh Hopsy says “Hear me out Sabres take a big run at Mitch Mner.” That would be something They’d have the money but I don’t know And I agree here with Peter Sorry with J with Jirdie I like Kessle Ring but for Peter banking on potential big time and even if he does get to his best even if Don becomes a second line forward is a second line forward and a second pair defenseman worth Perka Maybe That’s only best case scenario It’s a not even a yes in a best case scenario It’s a maybe in a best case scenario What do you think about the trade Well I’ve been talking about a lot already but in general as the thumbnail says fleece for the Sabres By the way everybody while I have about 60 of you in here hit subscribe if you haven’t already We do breaking news and analysis here on the channel as well as franchise modes on NHL 25 MLB The Show 25 Hockey Legacy Manager 25 A lot going on here in the channel as well as those breaking news live streams So subscribe hit that bell and that will be that will have you join a team of almost 9,000 subscribers now We’d love to have it be that much stronger with you as a part of it I would have much rather says Volt have watched Dobson or Rossi have Yeah in a one for one I thought in you know with the names that are floating around the NHL right now Dobson Rossi etc I thought Peter would have been moved in a deal like that but no it wasn’t meant to be Also yeah can’t believe Don was even traded in the first place Hockey in Arizona is officially over as we know it H so unfortunate Okay so let’s run through this one last time for everyone who’s joining into the stream Peter headed to Utah Yep Okay let’s do this one last time So JJ Peterka extended at 5 years for 7.7 million per And let me just look at this one comment before we get going because we got to see what JD has to say Longtime channel member We’re now banking on Quinn being healthy for a whole season and Benson taking steps forward All quite possible but risky Especially Norris 2 I like him but he can’t stay healthy And Sabres making sure that no one touches that playoff streak Yep Okay So let’s look back at it So JJ Perka who just came off of scoring a career-high 68 points in 77 games 27 goals 41 assists playmaking for Ta Thompson’s 44 goals Tucks 36 goals He moves out at the age of 23 after just 238 games three seasons with the Sabres as a second round pick in 2020 a diamond in the rough find for that 2020 draft He moves out as a guy who’s had a skyrocket in value over the last couple seasons from 22 23 to 23 24 and 24 25 even 64th percentile projected wins of replacement over the last three years according to weighted average data among forwards Needs to work on his on his defense excuse me But the finishing and the offense is absolutely there 91st percentile of goals 82nd percentile of finishing He as JR describes is a young dynamic rushing winger who does almost all his damage in transition has a ton of skill and plenty of upside but it’s not an attentive is not an intentive defender and could stand to round out his offensive game Then finally in his micro stats from just the 24-25 season 64th percentile of offense 90th percentile of finishing Definitely got to work on that defensive side of things as well but not everyone’s going to be super good defensively High danger passes rush shots chance assists rush offense goals etc etc etc is going to be what’s so valuable to the Utah Mammoth who now when we look at their team and their depth chart we see Keller Koulie Gunther Schmaltz Hayden I would think he’s not updated here yet e so let’s say Keller Koulie Gunther then probably something like Peter Hatton Schmaltz I don’t know Michelli McBain Krauss then it gets bumped on to Keroot’s Denland O’Brien and the defense still is fine Marino Cole Dersy Mata as much as it It’s nice to have Castle Ring there The Utah Mammoth can survive with Castle Ring being out and they’ll say thank you very much for the upgrade of Peter coming in Signed on for 5 years at 7.7 million expiring UFA in 5 years time in 2030 Um so that’s what the Utah Mammoth acquire They trade out and Buffalo acquire defenseman Michael Castle Ring who’s had a big rise in his stock over the last couple years for sure middle pairing two-way D who shoots the puck a ton Not a prodigious prodigious puck mover but not bad in that regard either Big at 6’5 and while he’s not a massive hitter he does drop the gloves sometimes So big increase in value over the last season He was in that something like 65th percentile this past year Defense took a big jump above the 75th percentile That’s great If you look at the minutes that he was playing too like we just said he’s playing 1741 on average per game some nights of 18 plus big role with Utah and he now goes to join Buffalo’s blue line along with Josh Don who has shown some good potential But is he going to be anything more than just a middle six winger I say just but is he going to be anything more than that A young two-way winger with a high motor and promising passing skills Former second round pick who put up very strong underlying numbers but few goals in a fourthline role with Utah last season So in a super small sample size like 50 games in fourthline minutes 84th percentile of offense 95th percentile of even strength defense all that looks fantastic but will it translate with the Buffalo Sabres And will it continue to be a part of his game that gets developed as Peter is the same age and miles ahead of Josh Don So again at best best case scenario this is a maybe so-s so deal for the Sabres If Dome becomes a middle six forward and Kessle Ring stays in their top four defense for a few years it’s a maybe okay deal but at worst it’s a travesty Don fizzles out Castle Ring is a third pair guy or leaves They both have one year left on their contract Who knows Ekblad to Utah now maybe says Gavin Lot there’s a lot to think about Jay Birdie needs Kulich and Austin and Benson to all be stars Sorry In Buffalo I get it What’s the trade It is JJ Perka traded from the Buffalo Sabres to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for Michael Kessler and Josh Don That is the trade right there Um could be that Buffalo moved out a disgruntled young forward and filled a positional need with a solid player as well as adding a decent prospect Sure don’t get me wrong at all but I’m just saying pure value for value That’s what I think is the problem The value for value situation here to fill a positional need and get a young player is nice but if I’m Buffalo I’m flipping him for the highest to the highest bidder getting picks prospects whatever and then using that value plus whatever other value I have like bow and bum to then fill those needs because the value that Perka had should not have been I used you know wasted is a big word but there’s a lot of value that you left on the table by doing this trade instead of doing something like I suggested and it’s easy for me to talk behind the microphone at the computer but Jy says “This trade definitely has the same feel as the Savo for Mloud deal.” That’s true Forgot about that one too Tough deals in Buffalo I didn’t like it at the time but now I think it’s good for both parties Right Yeah I hear you But that’s going to it’s going to be it’s easier to digest while Sevo is not in the NHL We’ll see what he does once he’s in Edmonton Yeah maybe a so-s so deal indeed Otherwise yeah it’s horrid for Buffalo As the reply says Byum is likely out too So maybe they have something up their sleeve there Yeah Yeah that’s it That’s the return That is it Dobson to Utah for the fourth I wonder they got to keep their fourth So Sabres should have added O’Brien Yeah could have been That could I could I could see that too But I see where the how the how the Sabres you know it’s like in fantasy hockey you’re getting a great piece Oh listen I’m filling your positional need I’m giving you a top four defenseman I’m giving you a good young prospect who was really good for us this past year and we’re taking a disgruntled guy who’s not going to resign with you off your hands So I’m sure you know there’s some Doug Armstrong silver tongue magic going on Thompson Marner duo would feel feed families It would feed countries But I don’t know about Martner to Buffalo I think it’s almost like guaranteed in my mind that he’s going to one of the out west to like I don’t know Vegas Anaheim San Jose Los Angeles Yeah Ryan Mloud very underrated had a fantastic season so easier to digest digest that Seavoa trade But if Mloud’s going to keep doing that and Buffalo’s going to keep missing the playoffs and then once Mloud is gone and Seavois is a star in Edmonton that’s going to be harder to digest again Yeah Mloud was actually really good for Buffalo last year I know we all raised eyebrows and Seavoa definitely has better potential but it has worked out so far Yes that’s the problem though This is going to not like the Seavo trade might hurt down the road This is going to hurt right here right now when Peter is continuing to be even if you know at worst I think he’s going to continue to be a 60 plus point player in Utah Great young team there that’s gonna be exciting to be a part of if he’s a 60 plus point player next year and Kessle Ring while he was good If Kessle Ring is once again just a second pair guy who scores 30 points still good but 30 points and plays 18 minutes per night and Josh Don is in a third line role trying to take steps forward and Buffalo misses the playoffs while Utah is having fun and fighting for a wild card whatever then it’s going to be hard to watch that from the sidelines Does this bring the market down for good wingers I don’t think so Honestly I think we’ve seen I I can’t think of a lot of examples off the top of my head but I think we’ve seen fleece like or fleece type trades that were kind of like laughed at around the league You see insiders saying like GMs are all saying “What was this guy doing?” And the market resets after I find it’s the market is more for contracts Oh this guy signed for this Well then I can use that as leverage But for trades it’s more listen we’re 32 GMs That guy was a bonehead or that guy was dealing with very different circumstances It’s it’s I don’t think it sets this the the the bar in the same way Caleb 65 people watching and only 11 likes What’s going on here guys Smash that like button Thank you very much Caleb Remember to subscribe if you haven’t already Hit the bell to be notified of all the breaking news trades and analysis of especially in the NHL offseason We’re almost 9,000 subscribers Join in for the NHL analysis as well as franchise modes between NHL MLB hockey legacy manager and so on Watch out for Klitchch though He has 3030 potential He played well for being a rookie and being on the top line with Thompson for most of the year Yes that’s great But you know ask me last year and you say “Okay Buffalo Wow Bowen Byum JJ Peter Austin Benson uh Byum uh Casey Middlestat all this.” It’s “Wow okay Buffalo Is it finally time to break the curse the next year or two Woohoo And then Milstat out Bum about to be out Peter out And you can say okay it’s for whatever reason that they had to do it Okay I get it But they haven’t gotten stronger as a result If you make tough deals and you become stronger as a result then fine But I don’t see a world and of course it’s the beginning of the offseason There’s still a lot to come But unless Buffalo does major things with that potential cap race that they would have had to dedicate to Peter then they did not get better today And at the very best they do just as good or even you could word it as just as bad next season I don’t see the Sabres getting even close to the playoffs next year by removing a 60point player and give and taking on a role second pair D and a third line forward They need to fill those spots Jason Zuker in your second on your in your top six all season He’s not going to get to the playoffs Uh Kering is big He has six foot five I see why Buffalo wanted him since all their players are small I get it Yeah Buffalo playoff route continuing most likely You would think Yeah I see that I definitely see the draw in Castle Ring and I and I like him a lot but this is not this is not the move in terms of value If you want Castle Ring great Go out and get him But am I crazy to think that you could have gotten Kessle Ring for like a late first If you traded Peter for a prospect and a late first and then you flipped that late first for Kessle Ring and you kept the prospect or then flipped the prospect with Bow and Byum for to fill a different need that you had Am I am I thinking too much in franchise mode brain or am I actually talking am I actually speaking facts here I don’t know Probably would have rather had a draft pick than don’t Maybe a second or a third Even though JJ could have gotten a first plus Yes they need to do more says Hobsy As an Ottawa fan I hope they don’t right But for their fans hopefully there’s some light coming up That’s it I don’t really have hate in my heart for any team Of course I have rivals as a Canadians fan But like pure hate in my heart for a franchise like if you wear the jersey I’m spitting on you No I’m never going to be that kind of fan I’m just not that kind of person So do I kind of take like a a sports fan joy in watching teams like Buffalo and Toronto miss the playoffs or not get far in the playoffs Yeah sure I think we’d be lying to ourselves if we didn’t say that we got some joy out of that from our rivals failing but deep down in my heart I wouldn’t mind Toronto Maybe this is a crazy statement but I I want to see success from these for these fans that have had so much pain and that have done the right steps Like Toronto did the proper rebuild They trusted the process and now it’s been a disaster So whatever But Buffalo their fans have been waiting and waiting and waiting and reset and new group and this and that and Eel out and Reinhardt out and blah blah blah blah blah and there’s still nothing to show for it That’s a whole I guess that could be a a breakdown of another whole another uh way to think of things GM data and group of AGMs might need to fix this team soon Yes we did Buffalo in what NHL 21 I guess we’re going back or NHL 20 I think we did Buffalo We’re have to go back soon I’m more a fan of Dangles meltdown So please continue to fail Toronto Yes Yeah for sure That that’s something we can all agree on right Buffalo is stuck in the worst place They’re just mid at best I feel for Buffalo fans Yeah Utah fle them but I’m trying to make sense of it Yeah me too I’m trying to see it from both sides and there are positives for the Sabres but I don’t think we can fool ourselves to say that Utah did not win this trade If you don’t want to use the word fleece I would you know I understand But it’s really hard to not use the word win Win and fleece I get it But you I if you’re not saying at least a win then I got to hear a really good argument Don and Kessle Ring played with Thompson at the World Junior Oh I didn’t realize that There you go So hard to say much more than that That’s the trade Two for one Uh let’s see Two broader range of potential outcomes for Peter to confidently judge here says J Fresh Castle ring looks like to be a solid number four in the NHL and size plus skating plus right D is generally pricey I get that Don looks like a good third liner The could be anything from Vera to Kyu to Kessle So is there some risk for the Mammoth Sure There’s risk I guess in any deal that you do but I think there’s way less risk for the Mammoth than there is for Buffalo here Yeah five years at 7 by7 Bill Armstrong Master Class people are saying for good reason Let’s go back to the comments here Yeah weird there’s no picss attached here at all Uh as a Utah fan Kessle Ring can be a stud second paired power play Dman and Don can be a 20 goal 20 assist type player They basically got two second line second pairing guys for Retica which is honestly good That’s why I’m not saying it’s a bad trade in terms of what you got back You got two useful pieces but it’s not enough value Is that you know am I am I speaking in like am I trying to keep my feet in two different places Maybe but it just doesn’t make sense for me As much as the positional needs are filled and okay a right D who has size and skating and puck skills is pricey blah blah blah The Buffalo Sabres must have been so high on Michael Kessle Ring And as good as he might be I still don’t know if he’s worth JJ Peter Kessle Ring at his best and Don in two years at his best I’m not sure if that equals a guy who scored 68 points at the age of 23 and just extended for 7.7 million Super digestible number that you would think Buffalo could have gotten him at as well if the both sides were open to negotiation Yeah a couple of picks would have gone a long way I think show me this trade but then throw in on that right side Buffalo receives throw in like two second round picks and I feel a lot better about this trade Not even because of the picks themselves who are those prospects going to become but because that gives me value If I’m Buffalo and Castle Ring is doing great and Don’s coming into his own and the team’s trying trying to do well I can then use those couple seconds to flip them for needs at the deadline But the Sabres now will move into next year with no Perka minus 68 point production top six winger Yes a better defenseman but I don’t know By out castle ring in We’ll see what happens with my roomm and a third line guy whatever and Josh Don and draft pick wise if they want to make moves in 2026 let’s say at the deadline they have no seconds they have a first and a third which I doubt they’d want to trade if they’re going to be at best a fringe team and they wouldn’t want to lose a lottery spot in Gavin McKenna let’s say then you can put conditions whatever blah blah blah I would have wanted Krauss Casterling and would have sweetened it yeah I could see Lawson Krauss being in Buffalo I think I would have been a good fit I think it would have been a very good fit Wow So there’s a lot to think about in this trade ladies and gentlemen I’ve given you a lot to digest in your mind So I’ll probably leave leave you off there But 68 point production playing 1811 per night Utah they’re loving life now They still have a ton of cap space too Castle Ring great return on investment as they received him uh with a third round pick They traded Nick Bug’s dad He had He went to the Well I forgot about that Then he came back to Arizona and used Yeah So Nick Bugstad and Cam Denin for Kessle Ring and a third Marose who’s in their system did really well in the KHL Actually I wonder if he’ll actually be anything So a third in Kessle Ring and then Kessle Ring with Josh Don who’s a second round pick becomes JJ Peroa who’s a 68 point producer Sheesh and don’t still have to figure out on him 23 second round pick in 2021 26 and 28 in Tucson and 19 and 51 with Utah playing a decent role with them averaging 1331 of ice time Give him more of that full-time third line in Buffalo I wonder But tough situation to be on that team too It’s not an awful return but it does make a lot of sense the outset Yeah it’s well said there Sam However I get the feeling there’s something we don’t know which changes things Yeah that too That too This all happened because their billionaire owners aren’t willing to spend the entire cap Another problem of ownership in major sports eh All right so I’ll leave you there everybody Thanks for watching Leave a like and definitely please let me let me know your thoughts in the comments down below or in our Utah wins the CUP next year š
2 things….whatever Buffalo got for Peterka had to help them this year, they got a RHD 2nd pairing D for this year and lost a 1st line 68 pt player….how does that make you better?
I See some Sabres fans throw Marner's name out there, which I donāt see happening and honestly I wouldn't want that….but if the contract was right I would prefer Tavares signed as the Sabres 2nd line Centre.
Resign byram pair him with Dahlin. Now that power has his partner
Kesselring is exactly what buffalo needs
Sad to lose JJ, but in the end, seemed like he did not want to be in Buffalo anymore. I am not upset at the acquisitions at all. We now have a RHD for Power and Doan has very good potential IMO. Time will tell, but I have no choice but to be optimistic at this point. We shall see. Great job on this review!
You donāt build winning teams by trading top of the roster players for bottom of the roster players. Utah got a steal and they seem to know what they are doing.
I really liked Doan and Kesselring on our roster but it looks like we didnāt get fleeced (for once)
Also Buffalo is already making a move to try and get Gavin McKenna
They should have at least gotten a high 1st round pick on top of this return. Buffalo GM needs to be fired
Peterka is now making more than TNT? Wow. TNT can score 40+ goals. Peterka better. He also had 87 giveaways & got into Ruff's doghouse for not playing well defensively. This trade fills needs for Buffalo. Buffalo needs to improve their goals differential for next season.
…said that about the McLeod trade too. Fair trade.
This is why I didnāt want KA making the decisions anymore. The Sabres had all the leverage with JJ. You match any offer sheets and you wait until a fair return comes. A 3rd pair D man and 4th line grinder from Utah for your best young forward is a joke. I also hate the precedent for every young talented player we have. Want out? Fine, easy. Just be good enough to pay and say you want out.
Jarmo should be the gm right now and I suspect the only reason he isnāt, is bc Terry isnāt ācomfortableā with him just yet. āComfortableā meaning will do what he says on matters of the pursestring.
KA responds to the criticism that he magically sells low so he can buy highā¦ā¦.buffalo is holding your beer Kev.
Kevin Adam's is a clown and needs to be fired or worse.
What do you guys bet on? Quebec Sabres, San Diego Sabres, Houston Sabres or maybe roll the dice on Atlanta 3.0?
Buffalo seems to have a history lately of moving out young, disgruntled forwards who then go on to win the Stanely Cup.
