The evolution of Dressage

The evolution of Dressage

  1. The Piaffe's primary goal is collection i.e. taking of the weight on the hindquarters. This is not the case at all since the horse from Nicole Uphoff is not even close to bring the handles under the centre of gravity (or under dynamic equilibrium) The back is absolutely straight and not bend downwards behind the saddle (14th vertebrae)

  2. I know nothing about Dressage so this is a very unqualified opinion. But to my eyes, the 1990 one looks much more elegant

  3. If you make this comparison with an even earlier ride, like from the Olympics in 1940 or from the 50th, 60th, or even 70th, the difference will be even more obvious.

  4. As if there is any comparison between Nicole Uphoff and Rembrandt and the British one with the over spurred hard mouthed uptight distressed and distraught No. 1 superstar.

  5. 1990's dressage seems so much more graceful. 2025 looks like the horse has no elegance. Is that what dressage is now? Robotic movements?

  6. Ummm 1990 looks soooooo much much smooth and elegant. 2025? Looks like some of these A.I. Robots being built these days. Mechanical, uncomfortable . . . 2025 is actually making my knee joints HURT! ❤ Sorry but it’s what I see and I’m def not an expert? I am an artist and photographer so I look for beauty, flow of movement, ease and not robotics. Or. Am I wrong? I love a horse that “dances”! 💋❤️🥰

  7. 1990: flota en el aire, con gracia y elegancia natural.
    2025: ejercicio y potencia magistral.
Cuál me gusta? Los 2, pero prevalece la gracia natural 👍

  8. I mean I'm no horse expert, but the modern one looks like torture and extremely uncomfortable, while the older horse mooks relaxed

  9. 2025 horse is not even doing a correct passage. But it seems this strange skipping gait is seen often now. (And rewarded)

  10. The biggest thing to me (aside the way they are carrying their weight and how they move) the horse from 1990 looks relaxed and engaged which I can’t say the same for the other

  11. 1990 fairly floats across the arena, looks light and elegant , 2025, looks tense and weighty, almost as if being forced to preform something unnatural when it should seem free and natural.

  12. It looks more fun and bouncy in the 1990's. The horse seems relaxed and in tune with the rider. Modern day looks forced and uncomfortable.

  13. I’ve been producing the music for freestyle dressage since the late 90s. I used to really enjoy it, but now it’s not enjoyable because of the way the horses look. I don’t know how they can breathe a lot of the time.

  14. The horse from 1990 looks light on it's feet, moving with ease. The one from 2025 looks heavy. To me it is like comparing a corvette to a tank.

  15. The old dressage is energetic still at the end. Horse looks very confident and un bothered. The steps are balanced but not overly loud movements. The new dressage I see a horse giving up, no energy just fighting to do what it’s told. No balance or rythym, very bothered by everything around it. Ears not forward. Almost looks like he wants to crouch down but is being told to step higher… it all makes no sense. And it’s the end of the ride. He looks like he was probably done before he entered the arena!

  16. Look how much suspension the horse has in the 90s vs 2025. I love Glamourdale but his movements look stiff compared to the other horse

  17. I don't know anything about horses or dressage so as an outsider the top one looked better to me. Bottom one looked messy compared to it. (but again I have no clue on horses or dressage so)

  18. It's crazy how i see recent dressage vids with horses "floating on air" but after seeing this clip from 1990 they just look like uncomfortable stomping
The horse on the upper part really does look like it's floating on air, the movements airy and quite light

  19. I was confused at first. I don't know what I'm looking at, but I liked the top one much better. Then the cheering for the bottom one was louder, so I came to the comments to learn what I was supposed to see and… found my instinct was right! Ha! That was a surprise.

  20. The horse from the 1990s looks more elegant and free. The one from the 2025 seems too forced and heavy. Definite differences.
