Jets rather over pay depth players that they're not even going to play
Great deal for both parties
It's a great deal. For both sides. Player wanted to wait and see as to the cap going up. Not going to see too many long term deals because of cap going up tooo fast. Why would anyone go long term being a younger player. Still alot of money', still alot of time to get a bigger pay next contract
It’s not ending at the start of his ufa years, 2/3 of the deal is ufa.
It seems pretty clear based on 3×5.75 being the agreement, that samberg wanted upwards of 8M on a long term deal. His agent knows how much the cap is going up, plus having more than just 1 year in top 4 next time around means he’ll get paid.
Also works better for his age. Now he can sign a 7 year deal that takes him to 36 rather than 33 years old.
I think samberg wanted a ton of money on a long term deal, and I’m ok with how this turned out because the jets window is now, and he’s on a steal of a deal for now.
I feel same as you this feels like a make it or break it year and Connors decision will impact next year/this year by deadline.
1. Option is keep older players and try 1-3more max years of cup window.
2. Or re-tool
Not full rebuild but start the 3rd version of this team
I consider 1st version of 2.0 jets Ladd,Byfuglien,Pavelec,Little,Wheeler
2nd Scheifele,Wheeler,Morrissey,Hellebuyck,Connor.
3. Will be Scheifele,Perfetti,Morrissey and while you have veterans lifelong jets Lowry,Scheifele,Morrissey,Toews get younger push youth on team. Learn/practice how to be pros with aging core.
I rather have a really young team with potential than plugs.
I feel Samberg resigned to stay with this core if team goes into re tool he can either stay or get return similar Connor.

I rather let Schenn go deadline and have Salmonsson play NHL time. And when he leaves College Bomediene NHL time.
I'm probably not realistic but I'd like to watch kids get time and grow then same old and the core gets older. Let Arniel show he can actually coach and develop guys not just take what Bowness left him.
Even in goal it be great if Milic,Divincentiis could take some growth
I feel it's time quit bringing in depth taking spots away. Let the new core happen with Scheifele,Morrissey,Lowry, Toews, Hellebuyck if he wants to stay trade Nino,Iafallo,Schenn,Barron,Nyquist,Connor if he wants move on.
And let them show youth how to grow even if we similar Montreal barely make playoffs having potential and excitement of young guys taking steps will be great.

You have to take in consideration if you moved players/depth your getting guys back/picks.
If we got Kasper+Danielson+pick for Connor from Detroit.
Maybe other stuff for Nyquist,Schenn,Barron,Nino/iafallo,possibly Samberg by end of his deal.

Hellebuyck+Comrie and you hope Milic or Divincentiis can grow become NHLers one day.
I definitely dont see us being like Islanders we have team control/prospects and value still islanders don't have much after Sorokin,Barzal,Horvat.
We should be getting guys like I mentioned or taking chances Rossi/McTavish,Mercer,Byram,Hayton youth from other teams.
But if Chevy/Chipman wait to long and don't change I could see us being like Islanders/Sharks old guys wanting chance to make more money/win. And a full rebuild needing to happen.
Chill bud. He's just betting on himself for when the cap goes up so he can get a payday. We're seeing this all over the league.
