  1. Montembeault was originally supposed to be more of a stopgap, someone to fill the role until the goaltending prospects like Dobeš and Fowler matriculated to the show.

Given how he's played the last season, he isn't just a friggin bargain, he's making it clear those young guys need to EARN that net before they can take it from him. Montreal wasn't ready to love a goalie so soon after Price, but Monty is making a strong argument

  2. EA Sports NHL 25 has Binnington so underrated it’s insane. I’ve lose so many games because of it when I clearly out play the opponent.

  3. I think Markstrom is a little overpaid for his performance. He does give NJ a shot in the playoffs, but they never even tried to give Jake Allen a game or two in the playoffs. He may have done just as well or better, considering that the NJ defense is much better than in previous years.

  4. Goals saved above/below expected sounds such a bs stat, it’s something too dependant of the overall team performance and quality of defense that a goalie alone can’t be the deciding factor

  5. The Canucks goaltending makes me nervous for 25/26. Also, who is the backup in Minnesota now, with Fleury retired?

  6. The Tsk-tasting/smacking noise you keep means you need anti acid medicine. Get some asap.

  7. i am a ranger fan and without a doubt the sub par igor is the most overpaid goalie he was are worst player last year lets hope he can get elite again.

  8. Here's some statistical analysis of these figures as a little treat:

    The average goalie:
$5.45 cap hit, 29.9 years old, 7.43 goals saved above expected (1.36 GSAE per million dollar cap hit – basically how many more goals saved above expected you can add by budgeting each additional million dollars to a goalie), and 1.62 playoff goals saved above expected.

The best GSAE came in the $10+ unsurprisingly with 14.4 average. By far the worst was the $4-4.99 with an average of -0.52 GSAE (the only range with a negative).
    Cap hit ranges ranked:
    $10+: 14.4
    $7-9.99: 11.96
    $6-6.99: 10.56
    $2-2.99: 9.02
    $5-5.99: 6.67
    $3-3.99: 4.84
    $4-4.99: -0.52

The majority of the price ranges had similar GSAE to million dollar cap hit (1.23-1.45) but with some outliers. The aforementioned $4 million range had the only GSAE/million below 1.23 at -0.12 and some decent value was found in the $6-6.99 million range at 1.70 GSAE per million spent. The only range that is better is the $2-2.99 range at a whopping 3.51 GSAE/million spent.

    GSAE/million dollars ranked:
    $2-2.99: 3.51
    $6-6.99: 1.7
    $7-9.99: 1.45
    $3-3.99: 1.44
    $10+: 1.34
    $5-5.99: 1.23
    $4-4.99: -0.11

Next I looked at consistency of goalies within the price ranges by calculating the standard deviations of GSAE. For all goalies, regardless of cap hit, the standard deviation was high at 13.03. The majority of the ranges are fairly inconsistent with an average standard deviation of 11.93, meaning you'll have a wider spread of performance across the group. The two outliers in even greater inconsistency are the $5-5.99 goalies with 16.34 and the $7-9.99 with a huge 17.02. By far the most consistent performance was the $6-6.99 range with a standard deviation of only 5.72
Consistency ranked (smaller numbers means a smaller amount of variation and thus higher consistency):
    $6-6.99: 5.72
    $10+: 10.18
    $4-4.99: 10.2
    $2-2.99: 11.26
    $3-3.99: 12.76
    $5-5.99: 16.34
    $7-9.99: 17.02

As far as playoff GSAE goes, the average is 0.3, with $10+ taking the silver with 1.02 and $2-2.99 in first with 1.13. No $4-4.99 goalies had playoff GSAE statistics and the $7-9.99 and $6-6.99 ranges were in the negative with -0.08 and -0.01.
    $2-2.99: 1.13
    $10+: 1.02
    $5-5.99: 0.72
    $3-3.99: 0.05
    $6-6.99: -0.01
    $7-9.99: -0.08
    $4-4.99: N/A

Playoff GSA/million rankings (average for all is 0.06):
    $2-2.99: 0.439 (Insane value)
    $5-5.99: 0.132 (surprising playoff performers)
    $10+: 0.095
    $3-3.99: 0.016
    $6-6.99: -0.002
    $7-9.99: -0.010
    $4-4.99: N/A

Basically, what I'm seeing is that if you want a good goalie tandem, you want a starter in the $6-6.99 million range as they are by far the most consistent and have the third best total GSAE and the second best GSAE per million spent paired with a $2-2.99 backup because you have a decently consistent chance of getting one in the middle of GSAE despite being the bottom of the price points and a solid playoff performer. Or pay for a superstar if you're confident he can outperform the averages.

Edit: Also, avoid the $4-4.99 price range: they scored terribly except for in consistency, meaning the risk is great that you'd get a poor performance and none making the playoffs is also a bad sign.

  9. Goals saved above expected is misleading. If a goalie played 66 games and was plus 20 and another played 33 with plus ten then they each performed equally.

  10. i said it many times!!!! NO goaltender is worth over 5mill ,,,,, when they stop over training all year long and start playing 75 games a season then we can talk ….. srsly 8mill 10mill and they barely play 60 games some 55 ….. its a disgrace!!!!

  11. Does Hellebuyck winning the Hart at 8.5 make the majority of goalies underpaid? Even Kucherov and Crosby who are well known to be team friendly contracts are higher than that

  12. Stuart Skinner deserves so much more than 2.6 purely for the amount of complaining I hear about him. People complain like he's getting 8m+

  13. Honestly, the hate on Skinner is over the top. Skinner and Pickard as a tandem is a solid pair, they’re goalies who are plainly average, but have been consistent, predictable even. But after watching the Oilers play and make the Finals 2 years in a row, it’s plain to see that the major issue is that the Oilers seem to have a problem with not being aggressive. Or being too aggressive causing Penalties. Too many times they’ve coughed up the puck or just flat out lost a battle along the boards. It is painful watching the Oilers’ goaltenders get peppered because the team just can’t get the puck out of the defensive zone.

  14. The Pickard-Skinner example was a really good telling point becuase when a goalie has a .886 save % NOT very good but ends up 7-1 versus Skinner's .889 % 7-7 you should be able to EASILY tell it was the TEAM not the goalie .

  15. Bobrovsky was instrumental to Panthers winning 24. 25 still elite in finals but they wouldve won anyway. He is 36 which is starting to be very old. I dont really know what to do. Would certainly not pay 10mil to a 36 year old. But would bobrovsky take like 5 million? At that price you could keep him.

  16. I reqlly hope the gibson/talbot combo will bring stability to the net. Detroit has had streaky goaltending as in husso/lyon/ned/etc showed flashes, but were never consistent or could actually be relied on.
