I'm a long time Panthers fan. Huberdeau was my favourite player. I was gutted by the trade. Out of all the teams, Calgary?! There was no way I was going to start watching Flames games just to keep tabs on JH. So I said goodbye. Turns out Tkachuk was even better and the whole team turned around after that trade. It's been nothing but excellence since. A fantastic way to get over that loss.
Fun fact: year 1 of the trade, the Flames actually finished with a better record and more points than the Panthers, except they didn't qualify for the 2nd WC spot in the West and Panthers were able to clinch that 2nd WC spot in the East. That end up changing hockey history forever.

You're obviously too young to know about the NHL trade that changed it forever was nothing to do with Tkachuk or the Flames, or Panthers. It was the Gretzky trade LA Kings. Following that the league rapidly expanded and with out that the NHL probably would have died a slow horrible death.
Tkachuk is a phenomenal player, and yes, incredibly valuable to the Cats. I just can't get past him being a world class scum bag on and off ice. While I treasure free speech, that doesn't mean I enjoy watching or support such a disgusting person, nor that I would ever patronize his team. Fuck Chuck.
Huberdeau looks like a whole different player on the flames compared to his first 2 seasons. His confidence has skyrocketed and he’s transformed his game to fit the flames more defensive systems and it’s reflected in a near 30 goal season. I honestly believe if the flames could’ve gotten slightly more offense from players like Zary, Frost, Farabee, Kuzmenko when he was on the team, Pospisil he would’ve had a 70-75 point season. Mind you he put up almost 30 goals on the team with the 2nd worst goals for last year. I’m confident in his bounceback

The dominance of this year's Panthers team is unmatched! They didn't just roll thru opponents (besides slight stumble at the start of the Leafs series) they demoralized their fanbases! Haven't seen a team like them where their opponents fans are yelling to blow up rosters. It's mind boggling 🤪

Lot of Cats fans hated the trade at the time. I wasn't one of them. Huberdeau rubbed some of us the wrong way with his comments during the Lightning series where we were swept. And his play was horrendous. During PPs, he would just park himself by the net, sometimes with his back turned to the goalie, looking to only pass to his teammates. It was extremely frustrating to watch. So rather then run it back for years "Core Four" style, Bill Zito saw that that team, especially Huberdeau, didn't have the style of play that worked in the playoffs and worked his magic. We were a fast paced, high scoring team. I had seen analysts say that that usually didn't equal playoff success and they were correct. We were easily bullied and treated the way the current Cats treat other teams. We struggled in the first round vs Washington and then were demolished by the Lightning. Something had to change. Enjoyed Huberdeau's regular season time here and he has some sick highlights but the complete change of culture made that trade worth it since day 1.

Matthew Tkachuk legit terrorized the East after this trade. First Boston, then Tampa, then my Leafs, then Carolina, then the Rangers and now the Oilers. This guy is a total fraudulent scum and not a champion. This wouldn't happen if the Flames didn't trade Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers

People forget that Calgary was the favorite to land Eichel for a bit there too do the oilers beat a team with Eichel Tkachuk and Gaudreau idk maybe they stick together but Vegas took Eichel and the Flames fell apart crazy domino effect that the Eichel trade determined the last 3 cup winners

One in a generation, teams like Florida that makes other good teams front office pause to reexamine their strategic course. There are very few teams in the NHL that play the kind of style the Florida Panthers play at such a high-level. But is more than talent is the cohesiveness and the mentality infused by Paul Maurice style of play that is a combination of brutality, brilliance, discipline, and perseverance.
Florida is not the fastest, or strongest or more skilled team . But most players are this hybrids type of player that can adapt to many styles within the game at a very high level.
Most teams have 2-4such players. Florida has all 4 lines. How can anyone compete with that.
So the reason the Florida Panthers have had so much success it’s not because state taxes, but it is because they have a front office that understands what identity they want to have that makes them successful.
This is the trade by which I judge Toronto's reluctance to make a similar move at the end of 2022/2023 when they had bargaining chips on the table. Zito wasn't content with regular season success. He wanted it all, and he got it all. Twice.

As a Panthers fan since they entered the league in 1993, I was puzzled as to why Hubey was traded after leading the team to the best record in the NHL. Turns out someone is better than me at being the Panther GM. Is Bill Zito the worlds luckiest GM or is he the worlds most brilliant? Doesn't matter. Hubey was a very good player on a very good Panther team and became a pedestrian player on a pedestrian Calgary team. I think that's what Zito saw. While Chucky was a young leader and explosive player, Hubey was at his peak with the Panthers as a player who was just riding the laurels of a well constructed team. He struggled and was at times non-commital as a defensive player and Calgary found that out fast. Chucky excels no matter what zone of the ice he's in and he is certainly one of the most fearless players in the NHL. Zito fleeced Calgary. I'm thinking how cool it would be for Zito to con the Sens out of little bro and pair both the brothers together. I'd be willing to bet it has more than crossed Bill Zito's mind.
The Panthers franchise changed completely after the Tkachuk / Huberdeau trade (and others), Matthew brought in a different type of energy that the entire organization embraced. Me as well as many fans were heartbroken by seeing Hubby go, but again as many fans, I slowly realized that Zito was right, and I think that somehow, he knew this was the right move. GO PANTHERS!!!!!…I'm diehard fan since opening day back in 93!!! 2 in a row!!!
