  1. To me it’s pretty obvious, he was being used as a shutdown center basically the entire playoffs. He was almost exclusively matching up against MacKinnon, Kyle Connor, McDrai. It didn’t help that the only defenseman that could move the puck for two rounds was Harley and they were almost never on the ice together. Johnston was asked to play a complete defensive role at even strength and had no one on the ice around him to work with offensively. I think the idea that he had a bad postseason is frankly uninformed.

This was a Pete DeBoer deployment problem, not much of a Wyatt Johnston problem, and it’s probably pretty annoying for him to be constantly bashed for his playoff run when he played a completely different role than he did last season.

  2. Totally disagree with Shawn! Every other guy that makes the same money he does plays with others of pretty darn good caliber, can play off each other, their isnt one guy on the top 2 lines, one specific guy necessarily "driving " the line. And if you say they do, they have guys that can finish. Johnston doesn't at all! In the top 9, he played with a group that was the most inferior. So I dont agree that because he makes 8 mil, throw 2 scrubs on his line and he should still score, assist and not eat minuses. That's crazy to me!

  3. It’ll be interesting to see the degree to which Gulutzan and Graham allow the forwards to play organically while also getting them to play tighter.

  4. He was matched against the best in the world, and that's a lot to ask of anyone – but the key thing I noticed was: Wyatt needs to build strength. Core strength, so as to not be so easily moved off the puck, to keep position when advantaged, and also to help create separation from the puck from the guy he's battling. TLDR: the kid needs to get stronger. You can bet he will be, come next season,
