  1. Shane isn’t getting enough minutes to prove himself. I really hope Shane can earn his way onto the second line

  2. IMO, Shane should be playing above Stephenson regardless of the contract. He is a better player already. He plays defense. And most importantly, we need Shane to develop. I know the organization really pushes Matty as the franchise player, but I still believe it's Shane. If you look at the second half of last year and analyze points compared to average time on ice vs his draft counterparts, Shane shines.

  3. Erica it’s Hutson! You probably didn’t watch a single Montreal game all season lol. Anyway, keep up the good work

  4. I respectfully disagree regarding Shane Wright. An important thing to keep in mind is that your view of player development is through the lens of the Kraken organization. That is to say that bias is going to creep into your perspective because you associate with the coaching staff which is fed lines to give to the media. I'm not saying you're intentionally biased in favor of the organization's decisions – but you are being fed a strict diet of curated Kraken culture. Company values, unlike money, have a tendency to trickle down.

I believe the same is true in reverse. You could argue your familiarity and coversations with the players give you insight that we, the fans, don't have and is pertinent to player development. The truth is that the "truth" is always somewhere in the middle – and that means its the middleground between what the organization thinks is healthy for their bottom line and future earnings and what fans want to see put on the ice every night.

Last year Sound of Hockey did a great episode on Kraken organizational depth and player development and it was one of my favorite listens from the season. That said, I remember thinking at the time that they're being overly cautious with future prospects. Given the Kraken are still a young organization, I also thought part of this strategy makes a lot of sense. You don't want to burn kids out in back-to-back leagues or send them off to face a mountain that's too tall to climb only for them to come home tired and discouraged. However, you also have to test them. And I mean REALLY test them. Sometimes failure is how we learn and rise from the ashes.

Having addressed all these points, Wright seems to my hockey eyes, to not be getting enough playing time. He succeeds and succeeds and it is always baby steps within this organization instead of setbacks. He got off to a rocky start near the beginning of the season and they rightly took a step back. But when he shows up, puts in the work, and you don't permit him to step forward, then you're not rewarding your talent. Sports performance requires positive reinforcement and conditioning – which is a part of psychological conditioning in all humans and animals. (Thank you Developmental Psychology course I haven't taken in twenty years.) Even dogs learn the treat is a reward for doing something right.

I understand Matty B. is doing everything he can to be what the team needs and the organization put a lot of pressure on him and Wright to propel them into competition for a playoff spot. Was that unrealistic? Probably, though it only seems obvious in hindsight. But, I also feel like this organization is smothering their talent rather than mothering it. Wright needed time on Stephenson's line because it would have been good for them both. Stephenson needed a wake up call and Wright needed a reward. Do I expect he would have stayed on Stepehenson's line the entire season? No. The Kraken paid too much money for Stephenson for them to admit to fans that he stinks by putting him on the third line. But I strongly believe that both players attitudes and play needed to be addressed and never were.

And yeah, it's me… essay writing subscriber who frequently changes her username to reflect whatever she's doing. Lol. I'm sorry for this long one, but I needed to say it. #purged
