WHO Will Have The Better Rookie Season… Ike Howard Or Matt Savoie?

Hey Oilers fans, with the 202526 season just a few months away, we’ve got one big question on our minds. Who’s going to make the bigger impact next year? Ike Howard or Matt Seavoi? Both are young, exciting, and ready to fight for NHL ice time, but only one might break out. Or maybe both. Or maybe both. Don’t know. And that is exactly what we’re going to be talking about on today’s video. Thanks guys for clicking on this video. You know what to do, YouTube Trav. Really, really appreciate it. I’m just getting back from vacation. I had holidays off. So, sorry I haven’t uploaded since last Sunday. I’m actually recording this. I’ll be dropping this in like an hour or so. So, it was just uh busy, busy, busy. And um yeah, go go go. So, I apologize, guys. I feel bad. I just needed a break. I really really did. But um I’m back home now. I’m motivated. So, uh without further ado, if you guys are new to the channel, if you like Oilersh content, if you like hockey content, you know what to do. Smash that subscribe button. Let’s see if we can get 50 new subs on this video. That’d be dope. And uh yeah, question of the video. Uh Oilers fans, who do you think will be, you know, more of a impact player for the Oilers next season? Ike Howard or Matt Seavoy? I’m going to share my thoughts at the end of this video. Oh, and be sure to say at the end of this video cuz we got a sponsor segment at the end of every video brought to you by ww.timetrackers.ca where I interact. So, I do interact with every single comment in the comment section down below. drop a comment and if it gets the most likes in this video, I’m going to give it a shout out on my next video. You know the drill. If you’ve uh if you’ve, you know, been a subscriber on this channel, I’ve been do doing it for a little bit now. So, yeah, drop a comment down below. I might be giving you a shout out. With all that out of the way, let’s hop right back into this bad boy. Okay, let’s start with a quick look at our two contenders. Matt Seavoy, 21 years old, former ninth overall pick by Buffalo, now part of the Oilers future core. He played last season with the Bakersfield Condors and lit up the AHL 54 points in 66 games and even won the fastest skater at the AHL All-Star game. And in the other corner, Ike Howard, also 21 and fresh off a dominant college career at Michigan. He just won the 2025 Hobie Baker Award and signed with Edmonton in July. Natural sniper, lots of flash, but no pro experience yet. Seavoy has a massive advantage when it comes to pro experience. He’s already played a full AHL season and didn’t just survive, he dominated. Coach Chris Knobblock loves his versatility, especially on the penalty kill. And with players like Connor Brown and Cory Perry being gone, there’s room for Seavoi in the Oilers bottom six or even middle six. But don’t count out Ike Howard. This guy just put up 52 points in 37 games played in the NCAA and absolutely torch college defenses. He’s got hands, he’s got vision, and that pure goal scorer swagger. But here’s the challenge. Jumping from college to NHL is no joke. Howard hasn’t played a single AHL game or NHL game yet. So, while the potential is skyhigh, we’re talking top six winger potential. The risk is higher, too. Now, let’s talk roles. Seavoy is projected to be a middle six player, kills penalties, and maybe move up if injuries hit. Think stable. He’s smart and responsible. Howard, if he impresses in camp, he could land in the top six, but it’ll depend on how quickly he adapts. If not, he might start the year in Bakersfield or rotate in as a scoring threat. So, now you know the players. Who do you think will have the better year as uh you know, as full-on rookies in the orange and blue? My thought. Okay, drum roll, please. I’m going with your man Ike Howard, the newly uh acquired Ike Howard. I’m going to first talk on Matt Seavoy and then give my reason why I think Ike will have a little bit better of season, but I don’t know. This is a tossup. It really is. The fact that the Oilers were able to get both these guys is just extremely impressive for who they were able to give up in my opinion. Um Ryan Mloud for Matt Seavoy, steal of a deal. I think Ryan Mloud fits better, you know, out east and not, you know, he he doesn’t really handle pressure that well at all. So the fact that they were able to get Matt Seavoy for him, I think is a steal. And you know what, Ryan Mloud’s having well he had a pretty decent year this year in Buffalo and he just signed a pretty good extension over there. I don’t think he would have done that in Edmonton ever. So, Matt Seavoy, you know, he had a good look up in uh what was that? February. February. Man, does anyone else have a hard time saying February sometimes? That’s that word that gets me. Um yeah, he he came up right after the Four Nations faceoff and he probably couldn’t have came up at a worse time. I’m I’m not even joking. It it was bad. Like it was it was really really bad. I remember his first game against Philly. Within the first minute, he assisted Leon’s goal and it was like, “Okay, this guy, he’s smart. I I get the the smarts. I get the hockey. IQ. It’s definitely there. The skills there. Um I remember when the Oilers drafted Carter Seavoy back in 2020, 100th overall. They were like, “Oh, well, his Matt his younger brother Matt Seavoy. He’s projected to be, you know, a top 10 pick next year.” And I was like, “Damn it.” Like, I kind of want the other Seavoy brother. So, they ended up getting him. So, it’s funny how that works out. But, um I’m going to show some highlights right now. And by all accounts, like this guy, he he dominated. Like, he was actually really really good in Beo this year. um he was a standout player and he’s very young. So to be able to be an impact player at that age, it’s not easy. It really really isn’t. Uh some I I’ve heard some people say that the AHL is more taxing, for sure more taxing. And some people say it’s some of the hardest hockey in the world. Not even joking. A lot of people have come out um and saying that like, “Man, I’m happy I’m not in the minors anymore because every single day, you know, people are trying to get their names out there, make their names present, themselves present, and what do you got to do? You got to put in a full 60. So, it’s more physical and you really just go go.” And so, the fact that he was able to do this, you know, against pros, like he was in professional hockey, he’s playing against players. He went from playing against players, you know, pretty well his age to, you know, this is no secret. If you’re a hockey fan, you know this, right? He’s playing against guys much older than him. and he stood out like he was an impact player and on any given night he was making plays that people are like oh yeah he’s going to be legit in the Others for sure in the next coming years maybe even next year. So I’m not I’m not dissing Matt Seavoy at all. Like I think he can put together a pretty respectable season. I love the fact that you know hopefully they just the Oilers they just don’t screw this up and they’re just patient with him cuz I remember Dylan Holloway when he first came up he made one bad play and then okay well now now you’re out. You know, I just I really hope that they’re just patient with these prospects coming up. Um because I mean they they have to be they have to be. The Oilers have just just mishandled some of their, you know, first round picks or even just a majority of their prospects in the last few years and it just it’s terrible. It really really is. It grinds my gears. So, I think this guy’s going to be a stud. But, I mean, I’m I’m big on Ike Howard, man. I really really am. Um I really really am. You know, I know I said it’s not easy for some players to come out of, you know, college hockey and to just immediately light it up in the NHL, but I mean, people have done it. I look at the Johnny Goodro of the world. I look at the Jack Eels. Cole Caulfield even did it. Lane Hudson this year did it. So, you know, you can do it. And just watching this highlights, man, I remember watching Dylan Holloway’s highlights when he was playing for Wisconsin and I was like, “Okay, yeah, this guy’s legit.” But I I wasn’t man I wasn’t as impressed as I have been with watching I Cowards play. And you know it’s it’s interesting. Some players just really fit in and they they do good at at certain levels and then it’s that next step. It doesn’t really translate. But I I do think it’s going to translate for Ike Howard. I I see just so much potential in this guy. I think he’s an absolute stud. Um, I know I entertain the idea of maybe him being a Calder finalist. Maybe maybe not a finalist, but in the conversation at the end of the year, like I’m that big on him. Uh, I think he’s awesome and it’s it’s it’s his hockey IQ that’s off the charts. Apparently, his hockey IQ is is definitely the um, you know, that’s his bread and butter. He’s just an extremely hockey. He’s just a really smart player. and when he’s going to be playing with the likes of Conor McDavid or Leon Drytle, which I certainly think he will be. I mean, he’s he’s just got to be at the right place, the right time, and that’s what Connor and Leon need. And if you’re a trigger man, which he is, I think it’s going to be a very fun season for Ike Howard. So, that’s my answer. But, as always, guys, I’m curious. What do you guys think? Drop a comment down below as I interact with every single one. And it is that time of the video. Okay. Brought to you by ww.timetrackers.ca like we always do. Shout out to them. Go check them out. It’s Alberta based company with clocks all over Canada. Um, so yeah, definitely go check them out if you want a nice sch snazzy clock like I got over here. Thanks to all the fine folks at timetrackers.ca. And uh, with that being said, that time of the video, the most liked comment in my previous video, which I did on Zane Perex talking about caller finalist. Yeah, this guy’s this guy is going to be legit. Um, I did a flames video. I’m going to be doing more videos like that, I believe, just cuz why not? I want to get my videos out there, guys. So at Slay Slayhtw Man, this only got four likes. Come on, guys. I know we can do better than that. Looking like a rigged draft for the Flames, moving from ninth to first, picking Gavin McKenna. Some can dream, right? Okay. Yeah. I mean, yeah. Well, that’s wishful thinking right there. Who knows? Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know. So, um yeah, but thank you for the comment as always. I really, really appreciate it, guys. And uh yeah, just thank you for being patient and sorry I’m on a vacation there and I kind of just wanted to take a little break there. So my apologies, but back at work starts tomorrow. Thanks for all the continued support, guys. Really, really, really from the bottom of my heart means the world. So that out of the way, don’t be average when you can be above average. I’m YouTube Trev. Definitely leave a like, drop a comment down below as I interact with every single one. 1. I think we should have an all rookie line. Stack the 3 lines that will play more but still will give the young guys experience in the NHL for a full season. And then that will open up cap space for trade deadline (playoffs)time. In my own opinion 🙄

  2. I hope they both have great rookie seasons.

I'll choose Savoie to be the one to do better this year. Howard to do better later.

    Lets go Oilers!

  3. Hopefully we can hit the final again. Fresher legs, much needed. However, lets get real here. Those Panthers are really looking ominous. How they utterly destroyed us and the Leafs last season. Just relentless, in all facets of the game. Just hungrier and so much faster than us. We were literally out on our feet. Just a shame we've been able to outlast Vegas and raise our bar, only too come up against the Panthers. Life, it ain't fair!

  4. Hope both are good this year, but Savoie. He was ready and looked great, just too many old guys on the team to give him enough of a chance.

  5. I think both will have impacts. Howard signing here was contingent on him getting Ice time at the nhl level, he’s not joining the A

  6. Savoie dominated? He finished 29th in scoring. He had a good season but im just not convinced. Howard on the other hand i do like and Demidov,Parekh and Howard are mmy Calder faves👍
