Agree the season is too long
I’d be in for More playoff series / play in round over more regular season games
Also the current playoff format is an absolute joke
With the Pacific and Metro not being very strong
You could have a scenario where a 6th place team in example the Atlantic division that has more points than the 3rd place team in the Metro miss the playoffs
Go back to 1 to 8 per conference
Or my preference
1 – 16
To me this actually is a real benefit of playing a full season and being rewarded for finishing first overall
Could also see the
Top 12 overall get in
The next 8 have a play in round for 4 spots
The bottom 12 finish as equal lottery teams, no more of this tanking for better lottery odds..,
And don’t bring travel as a deterrent for 1-16 format
The west has always had more travel
There are teams in the East that can take a bus for the first 3 rounds before they ever need to take a flight … so how is that parity ?

The 1-16 format could have a Montreal – Toronto Final which would give Gary Bettman a jammer… but man the buzz
A Detroit – Boston, A Colorado – Dallas
Any divisional rivalry in the finals would be insane
With this format the best series are often in first round

May be can coordinate with other professional hockey teams to create a World Cup of Hockey during play in instead.
I agree with Marco on regulation on perennial losing teams.
Have play-downs for the bottom 8 teams. Best of 3 series. Winner gets first pick in the draft. No more tanking. It’s a silly idea. Whadda think?😂
When I was growing up the NHL had been playing full 70 game seasons. Back in 1967/68 you went from six original teams and six expansion teams. The real problem was four of the expansion teams made the playoffs. You probably needed to go to six teams making the playoffs and everyone playing in one division.
Expansion took that quickly to 74,76,78,80 games. It was 80 games from 1974/75 till 92/93.
Went to 84 games for a couple years and after a labour dispute back to 82 for the next 30 years.
The Play-in is a mess and further devalues your regular season. They need to work to make the regular season more valuable, not a lot like exhibition games.
Half the teams getting in is fine.
I'd suggest a one versus sixteen format to make it more important to do well in the regular season.
The current setup for 16 teams making the playoffs started in 79-80 when the league had only 21 teams 😮. This is long overdue to change now that there are 32 and looking to expand. So it means that half the teams are out, vs back then 5 teams did not make the playoffs.
Its insane to think about
Forget about Quebec city….U.S. teams reap the benefits of better taxes, a stronger dollar, and more desirable destinations because in Bettman’s NHL, America wins and Canada watches.
In terms of rule changes, that I would love to see to get even more scoring:
I would make all penalties last the full minutes no matter how many goals you score.. this makes teams be a bit more on their heels to not get dumb penalties, plus it does not reward a penalized team to go back to 5 on 5 after getting scored on.
On top of that, I would remove the other reward that penalized teams get, is the possibility to throw the puck down the other zone only when penalized… its just ridiculous that if you get a penalty for not playing by the rules, you get to Ice the puck as a reward for your penalty.
Stanley cup should be handed out by May 31st. Hockey in June should not happen. NHL should also start in September. Training camp open day after labour day, NHL starts 3 weeks later.
