And without further ado, we welcome in our guest Matt Warren of SP Nation. Very grateful for him to spend a few moments with us. And I started writing with SP Nation a few weeks ago and Matt was kind enough to to get me involved with SP Nation. Does uh some editing over there. I’ll let him explain his role with SP Nation. But like I said, very grateful for your time, my friend. And why don’t you tell the people what you do for SB Nation and and how you arrived at at this point of your career. Sure. Yeah. like way back in the day, I think it was um you know, Bryant Johnson. Um we were chasing him as a free agent. I was looking for, you know, some message boards to talk about the Bill’s um free agency work and I found Buffalo Rumblings way back when it was a little baby website. Um you know, started reading there, you know, consistently every day, writing in the fan post section. Eventually worked my way up to working for the site. Then I ran the site for a while. Uh, and then a couple of years ago, uh, they expanded their full-time coverage and hired me to be a manager. So, I, um, directly mana, I I work with all 32 of our NFL blogs, but directly manage just under half of them. Um, kind of helping with, you know, all the stuff, whether it’s, you know, publication, editing, SEO work, um, headlines, you name it, I’m working on it. Data stuff, um, art writing stuff, you know, uh, so plus I’ve written a bunch of articles for all of our sites. Um, if it’s about math, I really like writing about it. And so I got I do a lot of those like playoff posts and salary cap and contract work and things like that. So we do a lot of everything over at spbnation.com and SBNation in general, but most of your uh listeners and watchers will probably know my work from Buffalo Rumblings the most. And uh so I still contribute over there. Uh but um I don’t run the site, you know, on a day-to-day basis anymore. Yeah, it’s great stuff over there at Buffalo Rumblings. They’ve been a great follow throughout the years and I think it’s really one of the great names also when it comes to those SP Nation blogs, Buffalo Rumblings. It’s it’s absolutely perfect. And to take you inside the listener, Matt and myself go back to when I was a child. He was more of a teen and he was one of my camp counselors at Camp Huff, which is in an overnight camp in the Western New York area, really near Perry and and Silver Lake out there. So, uh, everything comes full circle in this life, Matt. And I’m starting to realize that. And like I said, I can’t express my, uh, gratuitity enough that I appreciate, uh, what you’ve done for me, helping me get get involved with SP Nation because it’s certainly a credible organization that’s been around a long time, and I’m excited to spread my work there. Let’s move on to the reason why we brought you on, Matt, and that is to talk Bill’s training camp. Dalton Concaid, knee injury out on day five of training camp. He had been one of the stars of the offseason program and the beginning of training camp, developing increased rapport with Josh Allen, I feel, a little bit down the field, which is something they’re looking to increase in his game this year. But this is a worrisome injury. It it wouldn’t be at face value if it were a different player. Just some knee soreness during the course of training camp. Uh wouldn’t be anything to be concerned with, but this is a player who sustained a knee injury last year. Missed three games. It lingered throughout the course of the playoffs. Dawson Knox said it was a torn PCL. So, it’s the same knee. He had a sleeve on that knee on the sideline today. What’s your concern level with Dalton Concaid? Is this a player that might start to become injuryprone for the Bills? I think they’re just playing it safe. And when you look at that really, really long list of injuries and people that they held out today, for the most part, a lot of those guys aren’t fighting for jobs on the roster. And Conc Kate certainly isn’t fighting for a job on the roster. So, he can be overly cautious. You know, there’s you availability is the best ability. you know, we go into that with some players, but they’re not getting rid of Dalton Concade or Dawson Knox anytime soon. And so, when we see those guys, you know, nicked up a little bit during training camp and taking days off, it doesn’t concern me. It if he strings together, say like two or three days of not playing over the course of the next, you know, couple days here, then obviously it’s more worrisome. But he didn’t look like he was like moving gingerly or anything like that. He was um I was right in front of him when he was catching passes from uh Rob Boris, the tight end’s coach today. and Dawson Knox were both doing it. Um, Knox caught a lot more. Concincaid wasn’t really doing the bending over like low catch stuff that Dawson Knox was doing. Um, but yeah, he also wasn’t like, you know, gimping around or anything like that. So, like I think it’s probably going to be okay. And I’m not necessarily worried about his long-term like injury-prone label. Yeah, it’s just with me. I think the alarm bell started to raise. Like I said, just because it’s that part of the body that he struggled with before, you hope that it’s not something that’s going to stick and nag with him his entire career. But as you said, it it was also the first day of pads today at Bill’s training camp. So, if there’s any sort of concern with a player, and Shawn Mcderman and Brandon Bean said this during the offseason program, especially when you start to to build some contact, I think it’s smart and it’s proactive to get him out of the mix. maybe build him in slowly to to something like that. And players haven’t worn these pads for for months at a time. Uh they’ve been out of the pads in the offseason program and everything. So you don’t want something kind of freakish to happen to a player who’s out there at 80% 90%. So maybe just give him some rest. Uh have him regain that strength in that knee. I’m not overly concerned, but like you said, if he starts to string together some DNPs, then the concern will start to brew. Dawson Knox removed from the non-foot injury list, hamstring injury, did not practice today, but he’ll be on his way back soon. How about elsewhere at the tight end position just before we move on? Zack Davidson, Jackson Haw both receiving a lot of opportunity. Did you see anything from Davidson today just quickly that that may have stood out to you? I know that he’s kind of a fan favorite. I’m not sure he has a great path to the roster though. Yeah, he I mean obviously with a big body like it’s easy to spot him when you know you’re watching the the field or whether it’s you know them doing tight end work or you know in team work. Um they the tight ends were able to find space today in the in the passing work. So, you know, they’re going to get some of their reps in obviously while um while Daltton Concade Dawson knocks her out. You know, nothing stood out to me as like overly awesome um from the the tight end group today, but again, it was the first day in pads and a lot of what they were doing was um they did some run a lot of run work today. What did stand out to you about that run work? Uh, I saw James Cook, the one play that stood out to me was he kind of beat Taylor Rap a little bit off the right side down the sideline for a nice 20-yard gain and that just showed his speed uh and displayed that speed and and game-breaking ability that is so critical to this Bill’s offense. When it came to the run work, what stood out for you? It was the first time those guys uh the big uglies in the trenches got to pop some pads, so I’m sure they were excited to do it. Yeah, one of the things I was specifically watching today was that defensive tackle rotation just to kind of like see and obviously Joey Bosa working with the first teamers in uh in 11on1 work and teamwork was was notable for me as well. But um you know I was watching the defensive tackles. I thought like Walker had a couple really good reps today during that work. You know getting some penetration. Um I thought the defensive tackles played really well today. Um that was what stood out to me. Um, you know, Ray Davis had, you know, a couple nice carries. Um, James Cook was super shifty and elusive. Um, but I was focused more on like what was going on with with the big guys in the middle. Yeah. On the offensive side, I thought during that run period, Osiris Torrance was mauling people. At one point, he tossed Balen Spectre to the side and this is just a mountain of a man. somebody who’s really come on and t not taken the league by storm, but but really hit the ground running to start his uh career. I thought year one was flawless from him. Year two, maybe an incremental step back, but still nothing to be disappointed about. And I was really impressed with Osiris Torrance, just the confidence that he seems to be building as well. a soft-spoken player and to listen to him talk to some reporters today. He seems to be coming out of that shell a little bit and really an incredibly valuable piece to this Bill’s offense as a whole. Now, we talked about the tight end position. How about pass catchers today? I thought decent day for Keon Coleman, but maybe some others standing out with the receiver position. Really a mash unit with Curtis Samuel missing his second straight practice with a hamstring injury. Elijah Moore out today with general leg soreness. Tyrone Shavers may have avoided serious injury after being carded off on Sunday per Shawn McDermott Shawn McDermott, but he was out with an ankle injury. And Kaden Prather, the rookie, also missing. So, a little bit of shifting. You had Dion Kane signed to the roster, a player that Bills fans might be familiar with. He hung around a little bit last year. Uh so some mixing and matching maybe increased opportunity even for players at the top of the depth chart just due to numbers today. So what did you see from the pass catchers that got you excited uh on day five? I mean if you’re asking just what got me excited Keon Coleman had a really nice day again. He seems to be like you said stacking days on days on days. Um looking really good. Um KJ Hamler stood out a couple different times but not really for great reasons. Uh, and uh, if I he and uh, Christian Benford went at it during one-on-one stuff and they were jawing pretty good. And then he was the one that had the Milano thing too, right? Like y Milano a little bit harsh on um, poor KJ Hamler there. You remember how they used to treat Isaiah McKenzie a little dirty and they they used to kind of treat him like like their little brother. K I don’t want to say it’s the same but KJ Hamler is kind of that guy kind of dimminionative in stature a great sense of humor and somebody who’s not afraid to mix it up as you said. Yeah. So like I mean he was jawing at some of some of the big shots on on the defense. Um I thought it was kind of a quiet day from Khalil Shakir. Um I didn’t I didn’t see every rep that he took. Um like I said I was watching some of the defensive line work um while they at least were starting the passing shell stuff or the passing one-on-one drills. Um, so I didn’t see every rep, but I didn’t really see a clear catch from Khalil Shakir today. That doesn’t mean he didn’t have one, like I said, but um I just he was kind of like nothing special when I was watching him today, which is weird for him because I think he’s really special and like obviously a really important part of the offense. So that’s why it was noteworthy for me. Yeah, Shakir I think during these training camp practices sometimes it’s tough for him to shine because his game is really that short passing game run after the catch and there’s room for run after the catch but he’s a physical player after the catch bouncing off players and and typically it kind of turns into two-hand touch especially before the pads came on but one thing I’ve noticed with Shakir throughout camp is they’re trying I think to work him down the field a little bit more he had a 20 30 yard touchdown grab on a corner route the other day and if they can add I said this on a previous episode if they can add that element to his game that can make him a much more dynamic player and boy they would really get a bargain at at that price that they paid with his new contract this off seasonason if they’re able to work that element into his game but Joshua Palmer for me was the one who stood out today and the connection between he and Josh Allen they’ve been a a tick off on on a few of uh intermediate throws down the seam with Josh Allen overthrowing him at times early in camp. They have connected throughout camp at times, but there have been moments where you can just see that the the timing is isn’t quite there. And today, they had the timing down the field and in one play Palmer slid in to make a a really nice catch and I think Allen really delivered it low uh where only he could get it. So, they’re already starting to to think as one and that’s going to be critical. I mentioned yesterday that Keon Coleman seemingly is in line for wide receiver two level production and it could be kind of 2-way 2B with he and Josh Palmer depending on how things go week to week. But it’s been interesting to watch this passcatching group develop and Elijah Moore’s absence today. Uh certain certainly opens the door for maybe some lesserk known players like Levisa Chenult who also returned today from the non-foot injury list. Now just two more questions for you. How about Matt Milano? You you mentioned that play with uh Milano near the sideline. Great video by Patrick Moran of Talking Buffalo. You can find it on his ex account. Milano. The way he can diagnose a play is is so incredibly valuable to a player that perhaps has lost a step just due to getting a little bit older, the injuries he sustained. Now, I say lost a step. If it’s a step, it’s like a half step at this point because he seems like he’s really recovered from those injuries and really regained that full level of confidence that Matt Milano needs to play at his full efficacy. And you saw it on that play, the diagnosing, the twitch, the acceleration, and then he did not spare any contact getting into KJ Hamler. And I think that’s Matt Milano just trying to show himself. You know what? I still got it. Yeah. Yeah, he turned 31 today and uh I don’t think he looked very slow at all. I thought he was like all over the field. His he’s always had great instincts and that’s always served him well, but especially as he does get, you know, past some of these injuries, being in the right place at the right time means not having to recover as much. And so I I thought he looked fast today. Um everything I’ve read about training camp is like he looks great. And I I do come back to what I think it was Brandon Bean said it that you know this is his first off seasonason in a few years where he’s not rehabbing an injury and so he could just really work on things like speed and conditioning instead of trying to get back from one thing or another. And so if if he can really like turn that switch back on, man, like I’m not anticipating like all pro Matt Milano ever again, you know, when the dude’s 31, but like that he can be Pro Bowl Matt Milano like really easily. I think if you know he’s back to playing that fast. Yeah. And with the linebacker room dealing with some injuries. Terrell Bernard and Dorian Williams both missed practice today. It was both players I believe second or third straight practice missed. You have Bernard with the hamstring, Williams with the calf. Both players were on the field during walkthrough install kind of coaching up their teammates. So appears both are are set for a return. Williams was in a boot earlier this week. So that was a bit disconcerting, but good to see that. on the uh bike today to put in, you know, solid reps at the beginning of practice. And so, doesn’t appear that he’s too far away from from coming back. But, you know, same thing with Dawson Knox, like he was on the field during that install period like um I can’t remember which tight end it was unfortunately, but what there was a pulling tight end coming across to to lay out a block and he made a nice block and Knox was all over celebrating it with him. So, like those three guys should be, you know, returning pretty soon. And you mentioned you’re not sure if Matt Milano can return to the AllPro Matt Milano. How about AllPro Trey White? He’s back in action. That cornerback two battle uh really in full force. I thought today was maybe Maxwell Haristen’s best day on the practice field so far. He he came up with a few pass breakups, was running stride for stride uh with with players on the field. I think at one point I think it was Khalil Shakir he was able to keep up with Yeah. pass break up on on Khalil Shakir. So uh what’s your view on the quarterback two position? What you saw today from Trey White specifically and how everything is going to shake out there? Yeah, from what I saw today, Haristston looked really really good. Um but and I didn’t notice Trey White very much at all. Um that’s not to say that like one’s in front of the other or not because I haven’t been out there for the previous practices and it could be a good thing. quarterback’s kind of that position where if you don’t notice him, may maybe it’s not too bad. And so, like, you know, when whoever it is, Mitch Trabiscy is holding on to the football because all the guys are covered, it could just be like the the quarterback’s having a good rep and that’s why, you know, he didn’t make a pass breakup. So, you know, it’s I thought that um Benford looked really good today. I thought the reps Haristen um I saw some one-on-one reps with Haristen. I thought he looked really good today. Um I just didn’t see a whole lot of Trey. Like I said, I came over late to that one-on-one passcatching drill. All right, Matt. Well, we’re going to get you out of here. 15 minutes is what I promised. I think we may have gone over. I’m trying to trying to get it right on that number, but I’m a little overaggressive with these questions. Why don’t you tell the people and remind them again just where they can find your work, anything you got in the hopper that you’re working on and and and what to pay attention to on SP Nation over the next several weeks. Sure. Over SP Nation dogs. The dogs here, too. Um, he’s really excited about the site redesigns that we’re rolling out next week. Um, so you should go to your local SP Nation site, including Buffalo Rumblings, to see that next week, early next week. Um, it’s going to be more fan focused. It’s going to be a little bit more um interactive. Like, we’re trying to lean into the fact that we have one of the best, if not the best, Buffalo Bills fan communities out there. Um, you know, we have a a really robust comment section with um great moderators. So, um, if you’re looking for Bill’s conversations, uh, come over to Buffalo Rumblings and check all that stuff out this week and especially after our site redesign rolls out uh, next week. Um, that I’m on Twitter next, Mattri Warren. Um, Twitter index, Twitter and Blue Sky, Matt Richen. You can check me out uh, there as well. All right, Matt Warren, very appreciative of your time, my friend. Uh, make sure you keep applying that sunscreen and and and stay stay cool, my friend. We will. Thank you. All right, Matt Warren of SP Nation. Thankful for his time here today on the show, and he brings up a great point with Christian Benford. It’s really unbelievable to watch him operate on a day-to-day basis. The physicality that he shows on opposing receivers, I think, is unmatched with any other player on the Bills roster. He’s jocking for position along the route and doing so in a way where I think he’s going to get away with it come game day. He’s really discreet with the way that he’s kind of tugging the jersey on the break and and and like I said, just being physical off the line. And that did present some problems for Keon Coleman on day one. And you saw Coleman struggle on that day. Didn’t come away with a reception. And it was largely due to the fact that he was matched up against the Bill’s number one quarterback throughout the day. And today during one-on- ons, Christian Benford could not be beaten. There was one rep that he was working against Keon Coleman and I thought it may have been defensive pass interference, but largely you saw Christian Benford really tow the line in terms of his physicality and use it to his advantage during those one-on- ons. And typically with a quarterback, I I’m not so sure that you could say this, but when the pads come on for Christian Benford, that’s his time to shine. And that’s when he’s really able to let his skill set flourish. And you saw that today during training camp. Those one-on- ons are so so interesting to watch. And I’ll give you a quick breakdown of those one-on- ons that I watched between the wide receivers and defensive backs. You had Khalil Shakir down the left sideline. Christian Benford knocks it away. Dane Jackson a pass break up on a slant from Joshua Palmer. Keon Coleman, a great catch with Dorian Strong draped all over him. Josh Allen missed Keon Coleman a little bit high. Benford ripped one away from KJ Hamler over the middle. Josh Allen to Khil Shakir. Beautiful fade route and a sprawling catch versus Jammarcus Ingram. That was probably the best play of the day from Khalil Shakir. And once again working that down the field game with Khalil Shakir during practice. made that catch against Jammarcus Ingram. Keon Coleman then beat Max Haristen off the off the line, clearly beat him. Ball was a little bit underthrown. I think they also ran out of room with the end zone coming up and Coleman was able to stop. Haristston ran right by him and Coleman made the play for the touchdown. Cole Bishop with a pass break up on Steven Gznell. Josh Allen finds Keon Coleman. That was the one where Benford was really all over him. I thought it was defensive pass interference. The ball came up incomplete, but I think if officials are there to throw the flag, they would have. And then later you have a double move, Coleman on Max Haristston, and there was an overthrow on the play, but Keon Coleman was open. So Coleman during those one-on- ons was creating a little bit of that separation and doing so against the rookie. There have been times throughout training camp that Max Haristen has lost receivers at the line and been able to recover using his speed, but uh not the case with Keon Coleman today. It was very, very impressive. You have Taran Johnson said Christian Benford is the best quarterback on the Bills and really the best quarterback in the NFL and he’s certainly up there. I don’t know if I’d give him best quarterback in the NFL honors, but as John Roberts says, Taran Johnson singing Christian Benford’s praises after a big practice today. And I didn’t notice a lot from Deion Walker. I was focused on the defensive line, offensive line one-on- ones. Didn’t have a whole lot of takeaways from those. I’ll get those to you right now. I saw and I didn’t have a great angle for these. So, uh, that was kind of my problem on this. Uh, I was trying to watch the wide receivers and defensive backs on one side, the offensive defensive lineman on the other. So, it was a little bit difficult at times, but AJ Epanza returning from injury recently. I thought he had a really nice power rush initially to start the drill against Dion Dawkins. And then Tylin Greybel, somebody who’s in for Spencer Brown. Spencer Brown and Cedric Van Fran Granger both remain on the physically unable to perform list. Van Fran Granger with a calf injury. Brown with a back injury and Tylen Greybel’s seen the lion share of snaps at starting right tackle. He’s also mixed in with Ryan Vandermark. It does seem to be somewhat of a competition for that swing tackle role. But Tylen Greybel stifling Greg Rouso in a one-on-one opportunity. Very impressive from the backup tackle. And then Landon Jackson, the rookie, pushing Chase Lunt, the other rookie, into the back field. So, the edge rusher getting the better of that one-on-one matchup. And then Matt Warren, our guest on today’s show, discussed earlier the run period, and we got a good look at the offensive defensive line there and a few takeaways from that period. You did have Balen Spectre getting tossed around by Osiris Torrance, who really impressed me, but he also Balen Spectre that is had an impressive run fit, came up, wrapped up James Cook for a tackle for loss. So, a little bit of a mixed bag for Spectre. And Spectre’s been given quite the opportunity with Terrell Bernard and Dorian Williams both out due to injury. Balen Spectre has been in there with the first team defense. And it’s always been about availability for him and he’s been available throughout training camp and I think he’s been making some plays at linebacker for the Bills. Then Ray Davis slithered through the left side for a nice game and gain. It was really impressive to watch how slippery he was on the play. seemed to be a good amount of hats getting to him, but he was able to work his way through a couple defenders for a decent gain. And Tom chimes in. And Joe, thank you for your comment about Deion Walker as well. Tom chimes in. How did Maxwell Haristen do today? And like I said to our guest, Matt Warren, I thought this was Maxwell Haristen’s best day uh at training camp thus far. He had a pass break up on Khalil Shakir, was really sticky in coverage. He did have a couple of moments in one-on- ons against Keon Coleman, but that’s tough for the defensive back uh to to win those. So, uh back to the running game, you had Ed Oliver, who I thought really had a good period. He was stout on the run uh throughout the period and and really on one from Ty Johnson. Ty Johnson, I believe, running to the right side. Oliver burst into the back field, stopped him for no gain on the play. And then finally, Dwayne Carter against Osiris Torrance. You had a Carter win that rep, burst into the back field, won uh and got a tackle for loss on the play. So, that was good to see. And Tom, another question. No, I didn’t see anything from Javon Solomon today. Pads just came on, so I’ve really just started to hone in on the defensive offensive line. So, I’ll be sure to keep an eye out when I’m back there tomorrow. tomorrow and then the blue and red scrimmage on Friday as well. Trying to get a ticket to Thursday’s session. Not sure if I’ll be able to find one. Let me know if if anybody uh could offer one up. But that’s the story from today’s practice. We mentioned pretty much everything. I believe he had TJ Sanders leave the field. He returned. And yes, John Robert. Like and share. Like, share, and subscribe. John Robert, you’re a mench, my friend. We’ll leave that up actually. But yeah, uh TJ Sanders left the field, the rookie defensive tackle. He returned to action though in team drill, so nothing to worry about there. I didn’t see Alec Anderson return after he left the field, so you’ll have to follow reports from others. I will as well, trying to gain an update on Alec Anderson’s status. He’d been backing up Conor McGovern at center with Cedric Van Fran Granger on the men. So he also got tossed from practice today after what Shawn McDermott termed a cheap shot. So two practices cut short for Alec Anderson. Hopefully today is nothing severe. We mentioned the wide receiver injuries. Uh I think we got every injury even though there are a million. Just to run down the list, you had Tyrrell Shavers not practicing with an ankle. Curtis Samuel not practicing with a hamstring. Elijah Moore not practicing with general leg soreness. Kaden Prather not practicing with a hamstring. That’s four wide receivers on the men for the Bills at training camp. Both of their two top tight ends did not practice. Dalton Concaid. We started the show talking about Concaid and he was on the sideline with a sleeve on his left leg. Shawn McDermott termed it as knee soreness. Doesn’t appear to be all that significant, but when you look back at the knee injury he sustained last year and the time he missed and how it lingered, that is the concern for Dawson or excuse me, Dalton Concaid if if that’s an injury that’s lingering into its second season. Now, also Dawson Knox, a hamstring injury. Did not practice, but he seems to be ready to go pretty soon after coming off the non-OOT injury list on Sunday. Terrell Bernard, a hamstring, Dorian Williams, a lower leg injury. Both of them taking part in the walkthrough session. So, they seem to be on their way back. And one thing we didn’t discuss is Tyler Bass. Bass missed today’s practice. I believe as Sean McDermott said he likely wouldn’t practice sometimes with special teams players. It’s tough. They use the turf field out of view of the fans in the stands. So, I’m not sure if he was over there kicking, but according to Shawn McDermott, Tyler Bass was unlikely to practice on Monday due to pelvic soreness. And he went four for eight on his kicks through the rain on Sunday. And on Monday, he was not practicing. That is Tyler Bass. something worth following there. Last two injuries, offensive lineman Cedric Van Granger with a calf, Spencer Brown with a back injury. So, that’s going to do it for today’s show. Thank you for tuning in. Appreciate it as always.
