Jiri Kulich + Owen Power lead list of breakout candidates for the 2025-26 Buffalo Sabres
To break a 14-year playoff drought, the Sabres are going to need some players to break out in 202526. Boy, do they need a couple to break out. Well, who are the most likely to do it from the forward group, the defense group, and the goalending group. Who’s most likely? We’ll talk about it coming up here on the Locked On Sabres podcast. The Sabres of course in the middle of the offseason. I am fresh off a trip to Quebec to Montreal. Went for the weekend. You might be able to tell if you’re watching the uh the stream. You can see the lid here with the flur dele on it. Um and a lot of Montreal Canadians logos as you might expect. Uh they were on the buildings when you drive into the city. And then of course everywhere you look there’s flags and there’s you know stuff to buy all over the place. lot of Nordik’s apparel and a lot of Expose apparel as well up there in Montreal. But for right now, all they got is the Canadians and then their MLS team. So, good trip. If you’ve never been up there, I actually that is I’m not someone who’s really been to many NHL arenas. In fact, top of my head, the only ones I’ve been to are of course Key Bank Center and then Scotia Bank Arena in Toronto. I’ve been to the Penguins Arena for a concert and that’s I mean it’s not much. It’s not many. Um and going for other NHL games like I’ve never been to a Sabres road game. I was thinking about doing that this year and Montreal I feel like is the spot that I would pick because of the atmosphere at the Bell Center and all that comes with. I think it seems to be the most unique of the NHL experiences because of the atmosphere of the building and the city is really cool also. So, we’ll try to get to a Sabres and Canadians game a little bit later on this season. Lot to get to on today’s show. Talking, we are talking about breakout candidates on today’s show for the Buffalo Sabres. And who’s most likely to break out, who really has to break out for the Buffalo Sabres? Because really as we go through today’s show and we talk about this and I got a couple of texts to get through as well and I also want to get into the Conor Timons signing just a little bit in the later part as well. Um the Sabres need somebody to break out. They need three players to break out. You tell me what you think the right number is. I would say the number is three. They need three guys this year to have their best career seasons for this team to make the playoffs. How likely is it that three guys have their best career seasons? We’ll go through it. I mean, some guys I would include guys that have been rookies or, you know, have just had a couple of years in the league and you would expect to even break out. And then there’s other guys that, you know, the clock is ticking on whether they ever will. We’ll talk about Jack Quinn. He might be one of those guys. And I just think you need to have three guys have career best seasons. Doesn’t really matter where they came from, but they need guys to take steps up. So, we’ll jump right in on today’s episode. I got a text question to get to as I mentioned later in Conor Timonss. But on breakout candidates for the 2526 season, we start today off with the forward group. And as we jump in on the forwards, to me, forward group is where you are least likely to see giant jumps forward. We’ll talk about the blue line. I’m more trustworthy of something happening there. Forward group. I would be impressed if they got more than one guy to take a big step forward, big big step forward in their offensive production especially, but on the overall as a player and the three players that I am targeting for breakout candidates in 2526, Zack Benson, Yuri Koulik, and reluctantly I include Jack Quinn in this exercise as well. Let’s start with the the the previous two that I think are on track as we sit here today. Benson and Kik. And I’ll start with Zack Benson. I won’t go too long with Benson because I do talk Benson a lot on this show. He’s a very interesting player to uh to analyze. I love watching him play. Zack Benson, it’s pretty simple. We’ve talked about it on this show. He already has made a mark as a strong defensive player, even strength defense at evolving hockey. Other metrics you look at, there are a lot of metrics that point to he’s already one of the best defensive forwards statistically in the National Hockey League. He makes an impact defensively. He penalty kills. He blocks shots if he needs to. He’s a very good battler for his size, especially Zack Benson has that to his game already. He’s got that grittiness. It is going to take the numbers for him to be a breakout guy and it’s going to have to be better than last year. 75 games played, 10 goals, 18 assists, 28 points. for me to say break out with Zack Benson. I’d like to see all of those numbers double. And I don’t feel like that’s that unfair of an ask. The guy has had two full seasons in the NHL. He’ll be 20 years old, still very young, and the book is not written on Zack Benson if he comes out this year and doesn’t put up the numbers. And in fact, because of the defense, he still will be a valuable player if the numbers do not come. But I think it’s fair to expect and fair to ask, double your numbers because this team needs it. You’ve played lots of games now in this league. I mean, between the two seasons, he’s already 146 games experienced in the NHL. Come on, let’s go. this summer. Get stronger, get faster, score me 20 goals, and put 56 points up for me on the board. And I don’t even think that’s his ceiling. So, that’s where we’re at on Benson. Yuri Koulik, I would say of these three, if I were to ask fans, I didn’t even put this in the text club because I feel like I know what the answer’s going to be. Of these three forwards, who’s the most likely to break out this season? I think almost everybody would say Koulique is the answer to that question. It’s the fact that he has only had one season in the National Hockey League. 62 games last year. He only played the one game before that. Um, so hardly, you know, it’s it’s one season. 62 games last year, 15 goals, nine assists, 24 points. 15 goals. Nice. For a rookie, nine assists. Playing first line center for a lot of the year. I’m going to want a lot better than that. And that is my only real problem with Koulique in his first year. It has nothing to do with him. It’s just the Sabres thrust him into a role that probably wasn’t ready for and the playmaking ability of him as a number one center far below what is necessary for that position. But the goal scoring it got going a little bit later on. We saw the the shot. We saw the raw ability of that wrist shot. And we know I think just by watching Yuri Koulik there is a ceiling there as a goalcorer at the very least. And there is probably a lot more there as a playmaker and as a well-rounded two-way centerman. At least somebody that can hold up in his own end. Maybe he doesn’t have to be a selky guy. Kik this year. I mean I think right now it’s very likely that he’s going to play a lot of games as this team’s number one center. It’s possible he even opens the season as their number one center. I don’t think on paper you would say that’s true because Josh Norris is on the team and he’s more experienced and he’s had bigger seasons and he’s a veteran. Um, veteran experience, same thing. The thing is, Kik played a lot with Thompson last year. And if Koulique is going to be Taage Thompson’s centerman, that basically makes him the number one center, whether you think Norris is better than him at this point or not. And if he’s going to be in that role, if he’s going to be playing 18 minutes a night at center or even getting minutes on the number one power play unit, I think that’s very intriguing this year to put him on the number one unit and see if that works. the goals I would like to see come up to 25 to 30 and assists that’s got to be at 25 to 30 as well. And to me that means you got to have a 60point season for him to really be worthy of firstline minutes. I don’t even think that’s that aggressive. 60 points for a first line center is going to be on the low end in the National Hockey League. But you don’t want to expect too much. He’s only 20 years old. um actually just turned 21. So that’s where I’m at. The shot I think is going to happen. That’s going to happen. The the finishing ability, I’m not worried about him developing as a goal scorer. I need to see Yuri Koulique be able to have more vision, as a playmaker, a little bit more as a puck carrier into the offensive zone. Those are areas I’d like to see him improve. Especially again, if Tage Thompson’s on his wing, that’s a guy you need to be good at getting the puck to. You need to be a distributor because as good as Yuri Koulik is as a shooter and as a goal scorer or as you know capable he should be as that type of player. The guy on his right wing is better and that guy is going to need the puck a lot and he’s got to be he’s got to become he’s got to become a good passer because he’s got 72 right right there. And then there’s Jack Quinn. much less confident in Jack Quinn taking this big step than the previous two forwards that I mentioned. I wanted to include him though because I still do feel like it is possible. If he doesn’t do it this year, it’s going to be very tough for me personally to see him doing it in the future. The makeorb breakak year for Jack Quinn. Make or breakout year, if you will, for for Jack Quinn. 74 games played last year, 15 goals, 24 assists, 39 points. It’s kind of interesting that you know again his timeline it’s how much the guy’s played that of these three he had the most points last year by 11 and he’s the guy who would be least confident in taking the big step forward next year. He’s had the injuries. He’s 23 years old. He’ll be 24 by the start of the season. And I think part of my problem with Jack Quinn whenever we’ve talked about him is last year he wasn’t creating chances. even at the end of the season when he finally started scoring, it was on a very high percentage of his shots. Now, that’s okay. If he wants to be a 15 to 20% shooter this year and he scores 25 goals because he has a really high shooting percentage, I would take that right now. But it would be more encouraging for me to see him be a consistent generator of offense. Right now, it feels more like Jack Quinn is a guy that could score five goals in a week and then disappear for three weeks and then score five goals that week and then disappear for three weeks. I would like to see Quinn become a guy that, hey, he might go four go games in a row without scoring, but you’re going to notice him all four of those games. He’s going to create chances. Maybe he’ll set up others. Right now, he’s a player that absolutely disappears for games, weeks, months at a time. and he has to get way more consistent for me to say a breakout for him. I want to see 25 goals and I want to see 60 points from Jack Quinn. None of those bars are crazy high for these three. It’s all about it’s all in the range of like be a 60 point player for me and we could go from there after the fact. But to make the playoffs this year, I think two of those three becoming 60 point players might even be necessary. Um I don’t know how likely it is, but I think it’s necessary. When we come back, the blue line, there’s one individual on the blue line that this is the guy that I think is going to break out and has to break out. Owen Power. When we come back here on the Locked On Savers podcast, today’s episode of the Locked On Savers podcast is presented by Monarch Money. Sneaky Jody Biosi back here on the Lockdown Savers podcast. June, excuse me, June, way past June, July 28th and we’re talking some hockey here as the uh the Bills get rolling to training camp. Drink it for the Sabres is only a little over a month away. It really does sneak up on you. Um we’re talking breakout candidates today. Went through some of the forwards. Let’s get to the defenseman and goalending. Two defenseman, one goalender. And we’ll start with the guy that I’ll do a full a more full episode on a little bit later in the offseason because I think this guy this guy breaking out is imperative to the Sabres making the playoffs. I I almost don’t see an equation that equals playoffs without Owen Power becoming and taking another step forward in his development. I believe that through three full seasons, Owen Power has been a very good to great defenseman. I think he is underappreciated for his puck movement skills, his control of the game. I think he leaves a lot to be desired physically and I do think that will come with time. I liked Wendy Ruff’s explanation earlier in the year about him building up his man strength as time goes on and he ages that that is going to happen. that will come the dominance of the game, controlling the pace. I think what you saw last year was a little bit of a step up in his ability to generate offense on his own. And that to me is where he will become the elite defenseman. That and the ability to shut down plays in his own end. I thought the first half of last year very inconsistent, very rocky on that front. Second half of the year, I liked it. I noticed more and more him shutting down plays, him being a little bit more, you know, leveraged along the wall and pushing a guy off the puck or stick checking it away. Like the play in his own end, I do feel like got a little bit better. He maybe know a good amount better as the season went on. You’d like to think of him becoming to become a Norris guy to be a dominant player in his own end, right? I don’t think he’s that. I still think right now Rasmus Dalene far better player in his own end but Diene you know I’ll make the comparison a lot at this point in his career was not that player and Owen Power I feel like is already a little bit ahead of where Dalene was. I don’t think Power ever gets offensively to where Diene is but his ability as a shutdown defenseman. Let’s see that take one more step forward shutting down plays and I think obviously the big key for power is his partner helping him out a lot more in that regard. Him having to drag Henrioki Haru up and down the ice for the last three seasons has not helped Owen Power make himself into a more elite defenseman here only at 22 years old. Michael Kessler, I’m not going to assume he’s going to do it either. In fact, we’ll get to him in a second, but much more promising profile of somebody that can help Power be that type of player by being his partner going forward. the offense. So power is a little tricky here because you got to remember not a lot of power play time, right? It’s going to be Dene on power play one. It’s going to be power on power play two. Last year, seven goals, 33 assists, 40 points for Owen Power. To me, what is a breakout look like for Owen Power? Again, it’s a little tougher with him because he’s already really, really good. Better than the forwards I mentioned, better than the players I’ll mention after. breakout for him is all-star all-star consideration. Maybe doesn’t have to make the team, but he’s an all-star level defenseman. And I don’t think that is crazy. I don’t think that is unfair for him. He was a number one overall pick. He is 6’6. He has grown physically a little bit. More to come. He’s 22 years old. He’s played 242 games in the National Hockey League. Here we got you some partner options finally that aren’t Henry Yoki Haru. Let’s go. Time to go. Owen Power becoming not just a really good defenseman but a a great toflight defenseman. And for that, what could he put up point-wise that would really mean that? Give me 50. Give me 50 points by Owen Power and give me another step up in his own end as a guy that is out there at the ends of games and he is shutting plays down. He is closing games. That’s the type of player the Sabres need Owen Power to become. Last year the 40 points this year to 50. I don’t think that’s an unreasonable ask. The only thing about Power to remind you about if you forgot from the end of the season, he got that injury. He got that lower body injury that I believe they even confirmed was a knee injury. Um that interrupting a little bit of his off seasonason. Little tricky. I hope he doesn’t start slow. That’s in the back of my mind though with him. We’ll see what kind of shape he’s in when he gets to training camp and if he’s ready for a training camp right away. Um I think he just got married by the way last week, last week or two. Saw it on Instagram. So power taking that big step up. Michael Kessler and this is kind of tied together because Kessle Ring’s job in my opinion is help Owen Power get to become that star defenseman. That that is your job if you’re Michael Kessler. And for that he’s just probably got to be a really reliable second pair defenseman. That is not what he was in Utah. He was a third pair defenseman in Utah. Um, I think with Kessle Ring, it’s a lot of the same stuff. You could put up a few more numbers. He’s got that booming shot. Maybe that’s part of how power uh gets a few more assists. He’s got a partner now that could blast off from the point and get, you know, seven to 10 goals, which is a, you know, going to be more than double what Yoki Hari would get on a on a on a yearly basis. 1741 last year. Be a 19-minute a night defenseman. Be a second pair guy. Move up and down the ice. and be that back stop that power maybe feels more comfortable jumping up into plays because he maybe feels more comfortable with who his partner is. Kessle Ring, it’s very tied into Owen Power. If I wanted to go just generic points here based on the offense, 29 points last year for Michael Kessler breakout for me, double- digit goals, 10 goals and somewhere in the 35 point range I think I would take as a breakout for, you know, breakout is it’s that’s a step. breakout is above that. A lot of these players have been mentioning that like it’s big steps up and for Kessle Ring maybe the big step up would be you know 10 goals and 40 points be a 40point defenseman for me on my second pair playing with Owen Power while you know insulate him make him take that step up and that’s a breakout for Michael Kessler. Finally, the last guy I wanted to talk about here, I don’t want to belver the point because we talk a lot about him, but Devin Levi, I mean, that’s the only goalender I really mention here. Part of the breakout definition for me would be a guy doing something that he’s never done before. And with Ukapeka Lucan in, I kind of can’t see him ever having a season better than what he had two years ago. And I don’t think it’s that likely in the first place. I’m going to pretty sour on him. So, I don’t want to mention him here. It’s Levi. And the problem with Levi is now Alex Lion is here and Lucin is here and the Sabres are trying to win. Now Levi might not get in unless he dominates training camp, dominates the preeason, dominates an early stretch in Rochester and then there is there are no hiccups in Buffalo. Nothing like he gets a couple of games early in the season and he thrives. He has an off game, you’re going right back down. And that is to me fair for Devin Levi. him just establish him being good enough to establish himself as an NHL goalender this year that would qualify as a breakout for me because they haven’t opened up the path for him. So for him to do that this year he kind of has to reach out and grab it. They’re not handing it to him. So the only way that happens to me he will have to have earned it in a big way if he becomes NHL goalender this year. So for me and him it’s pretty simple. By the way he is still unsigned. Um, no idea what when that’s coming, but they signed Timonss over the weekend and Levi is the only one that’s remaining, so they’ll have to get that done, too. Speaking of Timonss, 2 years, 2.2 million. Talk about it when we come back here on the Lockdown Sabres podcast. Today’s episode of Lockdown Sabers is presented by Game Time. All right, back here on Lockdown Savers. did not include Connor Timonss in my uh breakout candidates list partially because he’s a little bit older and I don’t think anybody’s expectations are uh are through the roof with Connor Timonss. The Sabres land on a deal with him. Two years, $2.2 million per year over the weekend. Definitely higher than I expected. I thought we’d be somewhere in the the mid $1 million range. Um, it’s a difference maybe of $800,000. You know, at a salary that low, that’s a big percentage of the salary, but it’s not really that big a deal for the cap situation. The Sabres now, after this deal, $5.19 million in available cap space with only Deon Levi to sign, and he’ll, if he’s in Rochester, then this is where they’ll stand. 5.19 million. So, Timman’s getting two years, $2.2 million. Um, he’ll of course be a UFA at the end of that. He’ll be 27 at the beginning of this season. So, he’ll be 29 at the end of the contract. And as I look at the contract, it is a million plus lower than Connor Clifton’s deal. So, in that way, I guess that benefits the Sabres. They get to spend less money. Uh capwise, I mean, they’re 5.1 million under, so it doesn’t really matter that much. I do still believe they’re getting they have a better player here. They have a better player in Connor Timonss than they had in Connor Clifton. Um, despite the fact that as we revisit Timonss as a as an acquisition, he’s only played one season in the NHL in full. He’s played 159 games in six seasons. across six seasons. 68 of them were last year primarily for Toronto and then 17 games at the end by the deadline with uh with Pittsburgh where he played a little bit of a bigger role about 19 minutes a night. And for me, it’s a little weird to have targeted and spent a second round pick and then a multi-year contract on a guy at 26, soon to be 27 years old that has played one full year in the NHL. This to me though still screams like an analytics move from the Buffalo Sabres. This is a good savvy puck moving defenseman. He is not physical despite being 6’3 213 lbs. So he does make them bigger. Um 2.2 million though you what it really is is I mean for the asset it’s kind of perfect because one of two things is going to happen. He’s going to be a good reliable third pair defenseman for them and he’ll help them make the playoffs or he’ll be tradable and the contract is very tradable. You saw him traded last year. So for me like my expectations are not super high for this player. It’s basically just don’t get them killed. The job as a third pair defenseman should be don’t get your team killed when he’s out there. And for Clifton that was the case. For Timonss I’m much more confident that will not happen. So 2.2 million. I got a text question over the weekend like, “Do you think that’s too much?” It It really isn’t. It’s It’s 500,000 more than maybe most projections might have put him where I would have thought he was going to be and I’m not losing sleep over $500,000 for a player that to me is an upgrade over Conor Clifton. So, that’s where I’m at on that. Um, one text question that I did want to get in as we talked about breakout candidates today and we talked about Jack Quinn and here we are about the Penguins. We made that deal a month ago. Got asked about Brian Rust. We’ll talk about Pittsburgh this week because they are they’re still shopping guys. Brian Rust is still available and I got a text question about what I would give up for Rust and the texter said that they would give up either Zack Benson or Jack Quinn in a Brian Rust trade. I would absolutely not give up Zack Benson in a Brian Russ trade. I would give up Jack Quinn, but I would not give up Zack Benson. To me, that is nuts to give him up for a player of that old of that age. But I also value Benson a lot higher than I would Quint at this point. And I don’t I think that’s I think that’s smart personally. I thought I think something I think is smart. I mean that shouldn’t really be a controversial opinion. Anyways, that’s going to do it for us today here on the Lockdown Savers podcast. Keep the mailbag questions coming. We’ll answer them on the show. Um as we go through the summer here, we’ll have some more nostalgic fun. If you missed our last show about our all drought team, got a lot of good feedback about that. For the Buffalo Sabres to snap their playoff drought, they will likely need several players to have career seasons. At the forward group, Jiri Kulich and Zach Benson lead the list, but is Jack Quinn still capable of taking a huge step forward? How many points is acceptable for Kulich to realistically be the team’s first line center?
Plus, why Owen Power HAS TO be one of the breakout players for the Sabres this season. Going from a very good defenseman to a star defenseman, and what Michael Kesselring’s role is in Power’s potential. Finally, whether this is the year that Devon Levi finally breaks out for the Sabres.

Great topic Joe, I think its really fair to ask Benson to hit 50points this season. With 18A he can easily topple that, and he should have more finishes to chances tha n10G. I expect he should hit close to 20G. I think Quinn will be better this year. His 15 goals came really late in the year…I hope to see him hit 25+ and work on his passing game. Kulich played an impressive rookie year even though he didn't get the full season there. I think Kulich's strength is his faceoff wins, which is what the Sabres need badly. If they want their PP and PK to be better, that is the immediate area that Thompson cannot fill. OP will be much better. He and Dahlin will be the main guys that will start all the offense this season. Adding their defensive D men and 200 foot game forwards "should" allow 35-45 less goals against this year.
Power, Quinn, Benson
I’m not holding my breath lol
Sabres in Raleigh is great. Buffalo fans have dominated it many times before. I was supposed to meet alumni at backyard bistro but the pandemic happened like 3 days before it happened.
Power, Benson, Kulich
Great show. I believe if Levi's new salary 1) exceeds $1.07M and 2) is "one way," meaning he gets it even if playing in the AHL, then it does count against the cap. My guess is Levi is about to get a one way $3M-3.5M deal.
Your dreaming if you think Benson is going to double his goals. He's a 3rd line player at best. Kulich is going to have a sophomore jinx this year. And Quinn there is no excuse this year it's been 2 years since the ankle injury – Enough.
Break-out for me. Team wise-Our PP & PK & defensive effort & goaltending . Than we are a playoff team. And our home record has to be .650 % plus
