Episode 107: Dylan Cozens to the Habs? Jake Evans to NJ?
get pucked hello welcome to the get pucked Podcast Dave Matt and veto here having ourselves already a good time pre-recording Jens how you doing pretty good pretty good same here same here no complaints good good no complaints that’s what I like to hear all right all right all right so there’s uh there’s a lot of stuff going on I think uh in in the world of the NHL in particular as it relates to the Canadians I got a couple things to talk to you boys about um yeah let’s start with um let’s start with something that obviously got a little bit of attention so um a game ago already at this point at the time of this recording there there was this whole big thing about Patrick l and Kirby dog a lot of people seem to not really be talking about the dock part of this equation but they were both benched uh for the better part of the third period um the play there is you know not clicking um and and it seems like even the the goal scoring on the power play if the Canadians can even get a power play uh has dried up a little bit for the L um uh part of this equation I’m just wondering uh are people perhaps making too big of a deal about this or or is this something that you need to look into um lot of people suggesting that uh that the mental state of both players uh would suggest that you shouldn’t have done that Martin St Louis shouldn’t have done that others are saying that they’re professionals it’s hockey players and they merited the benching um curious to know your your takes on on that I mean if they’re that fragile that you know they get benched and it’s all of a sudden uh can’t to play hockey I don’t want to play hockey anymore then that’s that’s really a problem with them more than it is to do with the coach um they if you looked and watched their game they weren’t performing they weren’t doing anything they weren’t adding anything to the team they were just was bad they were just there they were floating it was it was on them really it’s not like it was one of those where they made they you know back in the day where Terry saw a player make a mistake he benched them you know just because of the one mistake this was they just weren’t doing anything of value to the team they were hurting the team more than they were helping them you know so when you have guys that have that kind of skill level and that kind of talent you’d expect them to maybe not every shift but show up a few shifts a game in this case they didn’t show up at all and it was just they deserved what they got there and I’m not so I don’t want to go to the mental side of it I I think they they’re two players that had injuries and I think they’ve just hit a wall in the recovery you know that’s how I see it they just hit a wall and it’s going to take some time but at the same time you know we’re we’re a market where it’s we lose patience rather quickly in case you guys haven’t noticed doc um you know people seem to forget that he did miss an entire season uh and I still like I still want to give him the benefit of the doubt for sure but he’s going to have to show up now he had some games where you thought he was coming back but it just it’s not working out and at the same time I just don’t see them Doc and Laney building that chemistry that people hoped for I just I don’t see it working um so they might they might have to break that apart and I I know we’ve said in the past that we don’t really want to break up the first line but they may want to have to Tinker with that a little bit and Tinker with their top six a little bit uh maybe shift a player around just to see get things going a bit I mean you don’t want to break up your top line just break it up man like you got it’s a non-playoff team here like that’s not that’s it’s not as if that first line is safe I I’m not a big believer in the whole you can’t break up this line like what have they done for you I it’s just a bit ridiculous but um I mean I think this benching is warranted uh I think that you know Mart we spoke about it I think earlier in the year he should be doing more of this man he should be holding people accountable way more often especially at the beginning of the season when players were clearly skating I mean no pun intended I guess I guess skating is a wrong word just uh you know coasting uh instead of actually uh producing or working hard I think it should have been used that’s a card that a coach has and it should have been used quite often this season and it did raise eyebrows to me that it’s the first time that you does it it’s used on Patrick l but absolutely Des absolutely deserve to be uh benched and you absolutely at one point have to see uh his medal and what how he’s going to react to a benching and what how he’s gonna step back into it so I think it’s absolutely fine um and again it’s you know he needs to wake up but you got to realize that you got to know what you have in Patrick l he’s a guy who’s GNA Coast sometimes he’s a guy who’s gonna he’s a school scorer right and he’s a finicky one at that and I think that benching him more often than not won’t really help but if it’s gonna bench him and it’s it’s going to wake him up a little bit and and get him to produce five on five I’m all for it what you guys think about well what you think about that the following game he he started the game on the third line better matchups get him going with some better matchups at the same time I don’t look at it as a negative just cuz he’s on the third line just because his name is Patrick l doesn’t mean that he’s guaranteed a top a spot on the top six he should play on the top six you should but if if all of a sudden you’re looking that you know the guy missed a lot of hockey so he’s coming back and and if it’s going to be a situation where they’re going to put him on the third line to get better matchups and maybe you know have a a few less minutes per game but you know get his confidence up again why not to take that gamma we’re seeing take the gamble of tinkering the top six but maybe take a gamble in the other sense of bring him down to the to the third line and give him some quote unquote easier matchups and see what he can do there okay I mean he’s already play the line that he’s on okay it’s a top six in theory but I mean like guys like new hook and Doc they’re not producing at a second line level he he he it’s it’s very frustrating to to say yeah okay he’s playing on the second line but he needs better guys to play with in my opinion especially on the long term uh that’s not an excuse for how he’s playing and how he’s not performing and and whatnot but at the end of the day I mean like it’s not as if that second line is like oh man yes I get to play with Kirby Doc and Alex new he’s probably frustrated a little bit playing with these guys uh down the stretch and but at the same time Dave when he’s on the power play he’s playing with the best players on this team and he’s not doing much either there there’s your opportunity you know what if you can’t be a good a contributor on the five on five and you’re coasting on five on five then be a contributor on the power play even if it means you’re a power play specialist for this year until you completely recover get go through your Rehabilitation process if that’s the case well just to add quickly so that that that last game where he played on the third line he had 1345 total ice time he had one shot on goal no points um he didn’t seize an opportunity there he just it’s like he just not not much of much wasn’t wasn’t a minus wasn’t a plus he was just there he had a lazy game Kirby dock on the other hand two assists played a minute less of ice time kok has also played more hockey this year so I do expect a bit more steady production to his capacity and to his level and not seeing more than ly or whatever but he has played more hockey than uh than Patrick ly has this year yeah I there’s definitely he definitely has to step it up I I hope you know maybe at the return I mean the the West Coast Road Trip ends tonight and then you know you you move on and and I hope hopefully he could step it up at one point but I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt I’m willing the guy the guy scores goals man that’s what what the Canadians need you just got to let them go the whole team kind of is in this little weird funk you got you kind of got to let it go and move on from there I mean that it is what it is but again I think that I’m all for veto’s reshuffling of the top six because Patrick l is playing with two guys who I think have a combined 35 points and have played second line minutes the entire season and they have a combined 35 points like nobody in the league is that has that bad of a second line and I think Patrick l has more almost more points in both of them it’s like just and he’s played like freaking 24 games or something it’s just he’s got unfortunately when you watch him play with the exception of when he blasts a shot from the from the left side it’s it’s it looks like lazy hockey and I know it’s it’s not it’s not always necessarily the case because that’s just his style of Play It’s is you know being in a position and whatnot but at the same time like you’re on your third team now you get what I mean like this is your this is your time to show that you’re a pro that you know you’re an NHL that that you even want your next contract after next season you know it’s this is the thing he has to get rid of that stigma that’s on him that some people or some doubters have on him where they think he’s just a lazy hockey player he’s unhappy he’s mentally weak whatever the case may be now I don’t think he’s one is any of those things but the the doubters are out there and he plays this way no no no you wait the more he plays this way the more people will doubt and the more that he’s going to go into these funks and you know people are going to question his his mental state yeah but I’m going to I’m going to pause the Patrick Lon slander for a second here because at the same time too when you got a player like that I also think that you get the best out of him with when you pair him with the best players and I don’t think he’s been put on that Top Line yet yeah like how come co cof co cof goes games and games and games and games and games without scoring or producing and never drops down from that first yeah but Co yeah but Cole Coffield he goes games and games and games but when you watch those games he’s still he’s still playing his two-way game has improved drastically there’s chances that are happening with Lion’s last couple of G I’m not saying the bench him I’m saying to change no but to to mix it up maybe maybe Coffield coming down you get some Coffield was doing really well with Kirby doc uh if we recall the last time they played together that could be a thing there and then if you put lining on the top with Suzuki who makes anybody he play with uh plays with uh better I mean maybe you just get the best out of it the point is I understand that type of player and I understand what you’re saying I don’t necessarily know if I agree with the term lazy but I get your point it does look at times that it doesn’t look like he’s as engaged as a Gallagher would be for example they’re different types of guys Gallagher’s got the Heart of a Lion you know what I mean that’s it but but that but the people that are calling him lazy are the ones that are doing the comparisons at the end of the day I feel like you actually you have to understand the player you have to understand what you have some some are not meant to be that you have to put them in the opportune position position to Excel and then milk them for what they’re worth and you have a line that should be a go go Dynamo line and a defensive liability but you hope to beat them by scoring three goals to letting in two and then the rest of the other lines you can balance out of it not saying it’s the perfect example but just something to talk about something to to mix up I would have preferred that than seeing him drop to the third line like what they did last game I I didn’t see how you what are you trying to prove there I I I can understand you’re saying weaker matchups or whatever but I don’t I don’t see it that way I see it as a demotion and and and one that maybe after benching for an entire period was a little bit maybe extra and I don’t know we’ll see what happens I’m not the coach I am curious to know but one thing that is interesting to Pivot a little bit because you’re talking about Dave how we don’t have a true second line whatever and and maybe Kirby do is not the center there’s another Center that all of a sudden is out there uh a rumor as of as of today is the time of this recording suddenly the the Canadians seem to be interested in another I I want to say not not a conventional guy that I think would have popped up but um Dylan cousins all of a sudden from Buffalo seemingly is you got a bunch of teams kicking the tires on and the Canadians are one of them uh and I know that we had some people on on U on our local media here uh talking about it that Pier McGuire for example was one of these guys and mentioning his high IQ and and whatever um some people seem to be very high on him some people are like well go look at the stats and I pulled them up quick quick just to tell you just to give a context in case if people are not familiar with the Buffalo Sabers and and where they’re at um in 53 games this year he has 26 points 10 goals last year 47 points 18 goals in 79 games he had 30 year well the year before and this was his best year so two years ago in 81 games he had 31 goals 68 points that’s his all-time high uh prior to that 38 points and 79 and in his first season 13 and 41 um and an interesting thing to mention before I turn it over to you guys this is another first round 2019 player I don’t know what it is about that draft and what it is with Ken Hughes and everything but uh be that as it may um curious would you be interested and if so what would you be willing to part with David they start with you sorry I had to cough there for a second um I think I feel like Dylan cousins would would be another project in the sense that like he’s definitely has the upside and I definitely feel that he could succeed I mean Buffalo is a tire fire like I think he would be probably wherever he goes there’ll be an improved uh you’ll see an improvement in his play and in his point totals and whatnot and I think he’d fit I think he’s too expensive at that point he’s a guy who H if Ken Hughes had acquired him with no Fanfare whatsoever for a cheap price I’d be like all in on I’d be like yeah absolutely I don’t know if he could end up being a second line Center I don’t know I’d like to think that he would with you know he’s a guy who scored 30 goals that those don’t happen that doesn’t happen a lot in the NHL yeah well that’s it but at the end of the day I think now the hype has started around them and I think that it’s going to end up costing probably out of the market for what for what he is and for what he you know there are to me question marks a little bit I mean it would be a little bit of a project for the Canadians I think they have enough of those type of players so for me and unless the price is extremely cheap which I don’t think at this point it is I would most likely pass if I’m going to get a center I need a Bonafide NHL second line top six center I don’t want a guy who you know you’re not sure of yet I mean we already kind of had that with Kirby doc you already have that with with you know let’s move on from that I think the Canadians are well they have the assets to go get something a little bit better than Dylan cousins I think it’s a very similar situation between Doc and cousins so bringing in unless you’re moving one for the other which is probably what I what I’ve suggested um unless you’re you’re moving one for the other I I wouldn’t want I can’t see a team that’s going to have cousins and Doc that are basically you know one year apart from their draft years and they’re kind of in a similar situation their point production for this season is pretty much the same I think the cousins maybe has six points or five to six points more than DOC for in the same amount of games but the only way I could see something like that happening and especially with cousins being at 7.1 million for I think uh for a few more years um is that you you’re looking and you say okay we’re going to move on from Doc and we’re going to replace some with cousins and it’s in the same concept and the same project in one not but the only difference is that one of those two guys actually got 30 goals and 60 plus points so you could kind of see all right that would that’s a ceiling um that that’s kind of like a ceiling that we could see versus Doc we’re still wondering what is that ceiling we know he’s a former third overall pick and as a third overall pick you’d expect you know he could be an 80P Point guy just like he could be a 50o guy but then you’re looking at his body and all these things and his size and you’re like okay he there’s there’s a lot of great tools with Doc but cousins is very similar but he’s shown that he can do it on a team that to Dave’s point is a tire fire and there’s always seems to be that that notion every season like guys buff is this going to be Buffalo’s year is this going to be Buffalo’s year and it never happens and we’ve always heard the rumors about how the atmosphere there stinks I mean even now um ever since cage Thompson got got practically knocked out last game they had a a team meeting to talk about that so you know that there’s issues uh there’s issues in the room there to a certain degree so I think if you take cousins out and put him in a different situation you might get a bit more success than with him and buffalo but again you’re looking at somebody who’s not necessarily A Bonafide second second line Center just yet but at least he’s shown that he’s capable of a you know a 68 Point season and 30 goals he’s capable of doing it even even though it was just a one time you know we said it on previous episodes show me you could do that on a consistent basis um but that’s how see it’d be it’d be expensive because I think I Kevin it was Kevin weeks who put out that information and there was like four teams listed when you’re on a bidding Warf with four teams get pricey if you’re Buffalo why would you ever move him for Kirby dog like it just to me it doesn’t make much that that’s what I was about to say I can’t see that trade happening one for one I mean it makes sense if you I think it might not be one for one but I’m just saying like you don’t want two of those situations on the Montreal Canadians roster agree that’s what I mean you don’t want two of those yeah because it’s in the same it’s in the same concept it’s in the same idea of player they you know if you look at them even in their size and in their stature and the way they play is more of a finess and finesse game versus being two guys that are 6 foot3 and six foot4 who you are are physical they’re not let me let me ask you this hypothetically speaking right we’re talking about him as 2C and we’re like e you’re not sure because you’re not sure what if the goal is to get him as 3C at 7.1 million no I don’t think I with C going up and everything you’re still not not interested I’ll take Jak I’ll take Jake Evans as a 3C as a Bonafide I know what you’re getting day in and day out Jake Evans at 3C at 3.4 even $4 million then Dylan cousins at 7.1 that is going to be obviously miscast because his game is a skill game and he’s a finesse type of player with a high IQ and and good vision and uh who should be on the 2C and and we’re we’re going to play him 3C that makes zero sense well well only because only because the point is and it’s funny you mention Jake Evans I only mentioned I think it’s ridiculous too but but from the talking that’s out there you mentioned Jake Evans there’s another um nice H hot off the press rumor that New Jersey is kicking the tires like like significantly to to acquire Jake Evans so if suddenly you find yourself with jet Jake Evans traded for I don’t know what we’ll get into that in a second and you somehow move away from Christian Dvorak and then you got your guys in the HL that are coming up and you got the Kirby dog still here and if you look at somehow trying to acquire cousins for I don’t know what and you got this whole mix match going on maybe they do some sort of other massive package and change the whole dynamic of the team and go out and get yourself another like solid 2C it makes you wonder but to to where you two are going with it I’d agree 100% if you’re trying to go for Dylan cousins you’re going to Dylan cousins because you want him to play 2C on your team I think for what he’s done what the ask would be would just simply be too much for what you’re prepared to get from somebody who isn’t necessarily proven I think he’s got a tremendous upside I think he is a good player it’s just it’s a little bit late in the game I feel to go and put your chips in on a guy like that I think they could try and hold off and maybe go get somebody a little bit more established and not have to be too too concerned that would be my stance on that one I agree and a lot of you look at these trades kind of in a vacuum and you’re like okay Dylan cousins you get them for this or that but then you’re like but just who else you I accidentally muted my mic I’m sorry uh go see who else you can get for that package man like I think I feel like people have blinders on sometimes and it’s just like take a look at what else is available in the league you don’t have to settle on this guy because he’s you know what I mean I’m sure there’s other stuff available look he provides he would provide good depth right Dylan cousins at 3C would be a nice guy who could go up and down the lineup and forj but I agree I absolutely agree I would not do it the only thing I could think of is if is if they somehow got Dylan cousins where it didn’t include a Kirby Dock and you’re going to shift Kirby dock to the wing and Dylan cousins becomes the center and you have Patrick ly and all of a sudden you look and say there’s a lot of upside there but you know that’s on paper it looks good but again we’re at the point now I think in the Montreal Canadians and I don’t know if you guys agree and I don’t know if other PE our listeners and and the people watching are going to agree that we’ve have enough and have had enough projects we have a lot of prospects that are still that still have to come to play to prove themselves that are projects in themselves we need a bit more established know what you’re getting type of players now this is what I’m starting to I have been beating that drum since the beginning of the year well the thing is were beating that drum even last year and the year before where we still needed to fill that Prospect pool cupboard and and now the the cupboard is is full it’s not to say you stop drafting like the montal can have a lot of draft picks in the next two years but we’re at that point too where you know like people are saying oh go trade Jake Evans go go get whatever you can TR oh now the new one is Jake Evans and armia you get a heck of a hall for him for both of them together uh you know because it basically creates a whole your fourth line for you or your third line depending on the team you are but at the same time I’m all for moving armia I’ve been talking about moving armia for for four years but when when it comes to Jake Evans you you know what you’re getting with the guy and unless you know for sure he’s going to resign with your team on uh in July 1 you got to really start to think about like there’s certain players that you just know you got to have and just this is what they’re going to do this is what they’re going to come into the season these are the guys that what they’re going to do for us versus H you think they’re going to hit that ceiling this year you think they’re GNA take that next step in their thing it it’s like we have so many players that we wonder whether they’re going to take that next step or not and you know we came we walk into this year think wondering if sovi was going to take that next step and he and he has it and it’s fine he’s 20 years old hold on you mentioned Sosi and one thing that is fun because because it was something that was brought up on on um I believe the the French radio uh Sports channel today the the ask was and it was probably for fun I’m not trying to pull anybody out but this is where it was brought up would you trade Sosi for cousins one for one no come on they they both said the two guys that were answering the question they both said they would but anyway of course they would they want the click to listen probably probably but I digress I think that’s insane as well but that you know that comes back to the whole beating on beating on SLA and whatever and and he’s not producing and and as a as a first overall 20 years old the player on the I understand but just saying to say this is the vibe that’s out there you have another one which I thought was interesting while new Hook is not the most premier guy and you can argue he’s probably better casted on a third line than he is on the second line you got you got uh Michelle bers the Bergie you hear what he said that that he’s not even he’s not even an NHL player he barely a fourth liner he’s just fast so like yeah it just seems like the the attitude over the team is very funny that when the team was flying Skyhigh and put all those wins together it was everything’s great and everything now they lost five in a row and it’s like you got players on the team that aren’t even fourth liners you know you know what happens though no but the the truth is for the media just to touch on this a little bit is that everybody was uh resigned to having a bad season and and an okay season and it was going to go bad and then they kind of did a little push okay and the media you started getting the Hits and The clicks and people started getting a little bit more interested in the Montreal Canadians and now that’s slowing down so you have to come up with crazy crazy storylines in order to keep the people in to call to say new Hook’s not an NHL to say new Hook’s not an NHL just the skating ability alone is NHL the guy is an NHL the only thing is in my opinion he’s miscast he’s not he’s a guy that doesn’t belong on the second line he doesn’t belong on the second line he doesn’t belong second L but you know maybe he belongs on the second line with Anaheim or a lower end team that you know has to get to is still trying to stockpile players but no he’s not he shouldn’t be on the second line he just shouldn’t be you know on the third line adding speed to maybe more physical players bigger guys that could probably I want I wanna I want to touch back because I don’t want to get too too far off on this but but go back to Jake Evans again that that you brought up and again going back to that rumor about New Jersey um Jake Evans I think is very coveted I’m gonna be honest with you I think I think in particular in this year and given and given what where teams want to go and what he can bring and and it’s very obvious and forget the fact that this guy him and Joel AR Mia some kind of crazy Shack and Kobe Duo when they’re on short-handed as a blate which has just been hilarious Jake Evans I don’t know if I’m want to use those two names but okay why they weren’t a great tandom is my point they’re Superstars but that’s my point go look at Jake evans’s numbers on on on the short-handed yes he’s he’s leading the NHL for short-handed goals but at the same short-handed points sorry do we yourself a favor I wish I had it handy I didn’t realize you’re going to be such a clown about it I’m go pull this up it’s not about the goals go look at all the other metrics I don’t know if you’re a big analytics guy or not and if you are or not take it for what it’s worth he’s like number one in virtually every category yes I’m not he’s having a career year he’s also shooting at like a 21% so he’s having a career year he’s a hot commodity and this is probably at his Peak the Apex of his worth right now and we’ve talked about this in the past about would you keep would you trade him and whatever I’m asking specifically about this New Jersey thing that I’m hearing would you trade him to New Jersey and if so what are you asking for nothing that we would get that that that they would get nothing that they would get I mean I I I don’t think I would not trade Jake Evans I’m sorry unless the hall was absolutely ridiculous I would not trade Jak Jake Evans I think that you need a guy like Jake Evans going forward I think we spoke about this last episode or two episodes ago I think the Canadians have enough like oh we’re gonna slot this guy here like Justin Baron was going to slot in on and and you know if it wasn’t Justin bar it was Jordan Harris and if it wasn’t him it was ow Beck’s GNA slot in at at the 3C don’t no no worries it’s Pro like it takes years to get to that to there you’re already there with Jake Evans you know what you have I just unless you’re getting an incredible incredible Hall which I don’t think again I mean it’s possible because the GMS are stupid but I just don’t see it I just look at our T linan right like I I I I didn’t and look what we ended up getting like I understand you eventually flipped them for something else but I don’t know it’s just I think with Jake Evans given his age and it depends his salary demands too if his salary demands are reason you got you got to consider keeping him because if the goal is that you’re going to get rid that you’re moving on from the vorak which they are whether it’s trade deadline or in the offseason he’s gone armia is gone and then at the same time if you’re G to move uh Savard those especially Savard and Jake Evans everyone has heard of that the way they are in the room like they’re they’re key guys in the dressing room and not if you if you get rid of Jake Evans and and sard I think it’s going to impact the team a lot more than people think so if you move on from svard which everybody knows including the team themselves knows that poy sard’s likely GNA move come come the trade deadline then you know you gotta keep somebody like Jake Evans who at this point if you look at his age and where and how long he’s been in the Montreal Canadians organization he’s a vet okay he’s a vet hold on hold on so you’re both saying you wouldn’t trade him fine understood I’m saying I would treat him but like it have to be such a stupid hle what would it take specifically New Jersey but if you really don’t want to do the Jersey one tell me tell me an equivalent like a lot of people are saying the conversation must start with Simon nich it must start with it I mean okay if you’re gonna Simon nage I’d listen I just why would they do that I’m not again we don’t know guy who is potentially a rental like why like you got to look at from the other team’s point of view don’t disagree the the only reason why I could think Nitch would be would be expensive cost to get Jake Evans from the New Jersey perspective at the same time if you look at a lot of New Jersey fans the ones that truly follow the team they all say the cupboard is full we got our players our prospects our our key players and core are super young to take that next step or to get the player they need to be true playoff contenders they’re going to have to get rid of some of the kids that they got okay but you don’t think they could get someone better for Simon D I think you could go and and get a better deal than Jake Evans and opinion I mean I don’t know why they they’re they don’t even play that kid like he has even that’s one of the reasons why he’s become Expendable he’s a right-handed shot and if you look at the right side on uh in New Jersey they they’re full with Luke Hughes there the the douge Hamilton and they love kovich and kovich is having a strong year this year especially as a as a third pairing guy and there they just there’s no place for him and when they look at and say can you play will you play nemit over douge Hamilton at least from an offensive perspective because Doug douy Hamilton’s defensive game is a bit questionable the answer to me is no you’re going to play it over luk Hughes the answer is no so it’s when you’re looking it’s it’s like there’s no place for somebody like Simon nich which goes back you have to question why did they draft him in the first place well you know but that’s a whole different debate maybe that’s best player available I’m just saying that that the it’s interesting because we sit here and we’re like it’s it’s a multipronged sort of situation you got the player you don’t necessarily want to trade him but his stock is at an all alltime High you got teams that are coming after him and are are aggressive which would imply that they’re prepared to perhaps overpay from what we’re expecting and if you start throwing names like that now if you’re a New Jersey fan or you know more about the New Jersey situation than me or any of us here by all means fill us in the comments below um but I think that’s been the talk like if if New Jersey is so interested in Jake Evans and the HS want to retain him but you’re prepared to offer up a kid like nich for sure ation that’s happening you’re not saying no to that there’s two players in New Jersey that that they seem to have trouble figuring out where they fit in the roster one of them I think is a bit easier because you could just put them on the on the left or the right wing just put them on any Wing any to begin with the other one is nich so one of them is Dawson Mercer and nich and if I’m a if I’m New Jersey if I’m the general manager or the fan and whatnot I’m actually gonna say this from a Munch all’s perspective you guys I don’t expect New Jersey to trade Dawson Mercer for Jake Evans and if they did that then that’s probably I would say that’s the type of Hall I’d say you got to take that chance for it you got to take that chance and move Jake Evans for Dawson Mercer the the the upside is too is significant there for Jake Evans uh you know where the cost would be a jake Evans but again it would hurt Montreal I really do think it would hurt Montreal people might disagree they might call me an idiot whatever the case may be but I think it’ll hurt Montreal if you get rid of too many of the guys that are key players you know where they St stand on the roster you know what their role is and you know what they what they mean to the room and to the other players on that roster no I I I got to agree with you the hall the hall has to make sense if you’re coming and kicking Montreal’s tires because they’re not shopping Jake Evans as far as I understand other teams are approaching saying we’re getting close to trade deadline we’re going to be going for a playoff push a guy like this is probably gonna bolster that bottom six it’s needed uh you need guys like this um yeah then then Montreal Kent Hughes Jeff Gorton they they’re in the driver seat back said tell me what are you prepared I’m not prepared to pay I don’t care if the salary cap is going up I am not prepared to pay Jake Evans you can’t be stupid with Jake Evans four million over six years do that but now you also got to you got to talk to the guy you got to talk to his agent and see what where are we going with this I would give anything that exceeds anything that exceeds our yes but we don’t know which Jake Evans we’re getting are we getting the Jake Evans that’s shooting at 21% and oh my God he finally broke through and this is the guy we getting Jake Evans who’s been the guy that’s been responsible defensively he’s been with the organization for the last 10 years or whatever and and uh he’s more of a 10 to 12 goal guy and call it a day that’s it you you you gotta you gotta you gotta pay that’s why what you think he is not what he’s doing and not what he did what I think he is and I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again grab Aria’s contract the money the term you can even bump an extra year from what we what wa the Montreal and what B had given him or whatever and that’s what you give him four five years at three and 3.4 million that’s what you give Jake Evans in my opinion anything that goes a penny more than that you might have to say bye I’m okay with that as well I I you can’t overpay Jake Evans you have to get it done it’s just something they have to get done I don’t think he’s Expendable but you can’t overpay for him so they’re in a spot they gotta do it they gotta make it people compare them to Doo to the doo situation Doo while he was miscast and playing on a first line and should have been on a third line that guy was getting 50 points a season yeah we talked this last we talked about this last episode no it’s not a fair comparable it’s not it’s not the right thing listen bottom line is this I think it’s going to be a very interesting uh lead up to the to the trade deadline which is not too too far away and we’re coming up to that four nations thingy that’s going to take a bit of a break and I’m sure all the GMS are going to be talking during the course of that break figuring out what to do and give them a lot of opportunities uh which which is interesting because it means there’s going to be a freeze you know and they’re going to talk as is you won’t have that two weeks of games to see what happens so fascinating stuff coming up uh and I’m obviously very very excited to see what’s happening we didn’t even get really into like where the Canadians they are as a team uh they were riding skyh High what on that four five game skid uh now they’re kind of sitting in this weird limbo where they’re almost as close to drafting top four as they are getting back in wild card so they progressed by three points in comparison to last season that’s what happened it’s it’s well we’ll see we’ll see what happens it’s still interesting before we start having to pull up the things start looking again about draft lottery we shall see in the meantime uh if you made it this far in the video thanks very much consider liking and subscribing just throwing that that one out there we appreciate you guys let us know in the comments as usual what are your takes on things are you interested in Dyan cousins uh what would you be prepared to sacrifice uh to to to to trade to make that happen uh Jake Evans also specifically with the New Jersey Devils do you see a fit there and is there something that you guys want to write back and let us know what you think a trade would make sense um and that’s it any other things you guys want to let us know we’re always super excited and receptive to get whatever you say in the comments get back to you guys we appreciate you uh and that’s it so final word Jens get pocked classic d v I’m Matt and this was get pucked
In this episode, we discuss…
A couple of games ago, Martin St. Louis benched Patrik Laine and Kirby Dach. Was benching them a smart move? Will this affect Laine in a negative way or will he understand the message?
Kevin Weekes posted a tweet that there is some interest across the NHL for Buffalo Sabres’ center Dylan Cozens and apparently, the Habs are one of the teams interested in Dylan Cozens. Should the Habs trade for him? What should they trade to acquire him (if they do)? Don’t they have a similar project in Kirby Dach?
Apparently, New Jersey is really interested in Jake Evans. Some have even tried linking Simon Nemec (Which is crazy to us) to the Habs in some kind of deal that involves Jake Evans. Evans is a proven commodity, and you know what you’re getting with him. Should the Habs trade him, or should they keep him?

Thanks guys! 🔥
Great debate boys. I’m a bit older than you. I’ve been riding the ups and downs since 78. My honest assessment is that this team has taken steps but they aren’t ready to go much further until they acquire more assets, which can be used do target players they need. Laine will always be a 2nd option. He’s not wired to be a driver. He’ll need a puck distributor like Backstrom did for Ovi all those years. I’m not saying Ovi and Laine are the same. Ovi played way harder. I’m talking about setting up for the one timer top of circle. I would like to see them try Suzuki on a line with Laine. Why not mix it up at this point? Guys like Gallagher have played their heart out for the Habs. If there’s a market for him and he could go to a team that could go deep, he deserves a shot. Look at what Saad did by going to Vegas. Get what you can get. Set the table for Demidov and keep growing. We seem set on D and goal. But we need a better 2nd line and top 6 that compliments Laine. That’s why they got him right?
You guys are hilarious. Jake Evans is not worth Nemec. Nemec is going to be a stud.
