The 2018 Team Canada World Juniors sexual assault trial has reached a verdict. Justice Maria Carroccia ruled the Crown did not meet the burden of proof against five former players: Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dubé, and Cal Foote. The case centered on allegations from a woman who claimed she was assaulted after a Hockey Canada gala in London, Ontario. This decision ends one of the most high-profile legal battles in Canadian hockey history, sparking ongoing discussions about consent, accountability, and hockey culture.

I thought I owed it to you to cover this if you're interested in knowing the update. I'm not going to go over a lot of my opinions on this – mostly because I'm not completely confident in what I think I would need to think on it more.
Hope y'all are doing well – take care, we'll be talking about the Habs again soon.

Not tricky, she lied and that's all. Women need to be held on the same standard as men.
Hockey Bunny
Played, got paid, but when Rick Westhead made the story public suddenly she had to be a victim
Crazy stuff, I can’t say I know all the details about the situation, just hoping that this kind of situation is avoided in general. Its just plainly not smart for the players to put themselves in that position, guilty or not.
Folks can blame hockey Canada and CHL culture all they want but education starts at home .
Meat heads tend to raise meat heads .
I won't keep my opinion to myself! guilty or not guilty what these boys did was beyond disgusting.
Even if it is true in the statistically (and based on what’s been presented in this case) unlikely scenario that it was 100% consensual, seriously reprehensible and sketchy things were done by those players. We know that a) the vast majority of rapists get off scott free and b) victim testimonials in traumatic situations often involve a degree of misremembering or hyperbole due to trauma’s (not to mention alcohol’s) impact on memory. It’s just saddening that people are so quick to demonize a young girl for this. In any case, I highly highly doubt she is the evil, Machiavellian manipulator people are making her out to be. She was a young girl in what would be a scary situation for anyone even if it was perfectly consensual. As a woman, being in a scenario like that— it’s hard to imagine that it wasn’t at least to some degree coercive. I can’t imagine the amount of pressure she was under through all of this, especially since it was the crown that brought it back up. Regardless of people’s feelings on the verdict and the veracity of her story, I hope people remember that, and I ESPECIALLY hope people remember that how they approach this will be seen and internalized by victims afraid to come forward. I promise you, as much as you might think a liar harms people’s desire to step forward after being victimized, it is 100% worse for us watching people call people a liar. It never, ever bodes well for victims to see that, even if it is without a doubt the case, because it can always be used to undermine our stories. I just really, really implore people to approach the verdict with empathy.
Even if they are 100% innocent, at any rate, high profile hockey players need to be held to a better standard. The shit w Mailloux was heartbreaking enough when he got drafted, they’re definitely enabled. Luckily, it seems he had his own personal convictions, but this behaviour is evidently systematically disregarded
The way I see it is the judge had a chance to let hockey Canada know that this type of "culture" doesn't belong in sport period.
I fear that when I look at the rinks this fall and watch those Atom/Novice kids jump start their hockey journeys 20 plus years ahead when some of them make the show and get caught in something like this it'll be because of rulings by this Judge and others who didn't stand up and get firm with Hockey Canada and others when the chance was given.
I wouldn't have touched that topic personally but props to you about how you went about it.
As a former lawyer,I knew the Crown had an uphill battle. This went south when London police dropped the ball on the initial complaint then Hockey Canada failed in both the incomplete investigation and the quick settlement without the player’s involvement. I will not comment on the verdict, but as a hockey player and coach with both son and daughters I condemn the hockey culture that would think that this is OK.
Perhaps they're not guilty.
There is a huge grey zone where people can act unethically or dishonorably but still legally. Obviously, I can't know exactly what happened, I wasn't there, but having played minor hockey as a teenager, I can testify to the fact that young hockey players often act in morally questionable ways. However, it's not illegal to be a jerk. Even if the players never did cross the line into illegality, the fact that they let themselves get into this kind of situation is still disappointing. I can understand the feeling that they should have been punished somehow.
Sounds gross. Surprised with the verdict
Good video
In any case, after McLeod had sex with E.M. Calling his teammates to have a ménage at six is a terrible ungentleman-like idea. These bros were boys at the time but if I was one of the parents, I would be gutted if my 18 year old kid behaved like that.
Sue her now. Not guilty. These guys should sue the nhl if not immediately reinstated.
The cover-up was always bigger than the story. You can have your opinion about what happened in that hotel room, I wasn't there, I wasn't in court, I haven't walked in any of their shoes. I have my own subjective opinions and they're none of anybody's business.
But…
The way hockey Canada tried to kill the story and hide everything… Was absoluteky, totally reprehensible.
They should have been guilty. Plain and simple. We all know at least one woman who was abused in their life. This is no joke. They should be held accountable.
The one question I would ask them is.. What would you want done legally… if it was your sister that was the victim?…🤔
6 people did something very wrong. No one is guilty. 5 may never play again and one goes on with a lots of money. Yes the system is flawed but so is the out come on many levels.
Won't contradict the Judge, so I guess Philly's goalie problems are fixed? Hart was the most talented in a team in search for goalies since Hextall retired only to have flashes in the pan success. But, I don't know, I don't know if the guys in the Flyers would feel great knowing what Hart's into behind closed doors, that's the type of stuff that's not meant teams to suffer the cloud even if acquitted, such guys like Dubé and Hart, the only consequential players to their team in this thing would bring to any locker room they join, I'm no puritan but I wouldn't like to know that my teammate is into whatever happened and was judged legal in the end.
This is absolutely bullshit. They are rapist.
Wow… victims never get their justice. So gross
Thanks for publishing this man
I know nothing about this so I think it is important to get the word out but I missed something in the subtle statement the Magistrate made.
They were found not guilty, (this is good, right?)
The Magistrate makes a comment. Was she hinting that she thought the defendants were guilty but got away with it, for lack of evidence?
I ask because you returned after her comments and essentially said this is a black mark on hockey Canada.
Something went over wy head. I feel like the dumb soldier at the end of, 'A FEW GOOD MEN' as he keeps saying (paraphrase) but we were found innocent, why is that bad?
Can someone throw me a bone. Thanks
What is the significance of the the photo shown at 3:10 ?? You held on it for awhile. Pourquoi?
Well done W.
The levels of simpery in these comments is off the charts. In a world where OF girls sleep with 1000 men in 24 hours you think there aren`t 1000s of party girls out there running hockey trains. Regret is not rape. These guys have had their lives destroyed, lost out on generational wealth and have had their hockey dreams extinguished. I hope this chick gets what`s coming to her as well as the media and Hockey Canada.
Everyone’s mad that these guy’s were into a gangbang that was completely consensual 😂 They’re all proven innocent, and lost millions of potential income because a girl regretted her decision and the repercussions that followed, and chose to try to get monetary gain out of it.
We’re gonna shit on young guys for having sexual preferences? Yet you all bitch when people don’t like the pride jerseys. At least stay consistent.
I feel bad for the guys that lost out on 2 years of hockey all for nothing. People just assume rich and successful = bad. That’s not the case
I was angry at the not guilty verdict however the judge gave justification to her verdict that at least I can understand her thinking. I don’t agree with all her reasons that she stated made EM not credible (ex. Lied about her weight -wtf she had enough other reasons why she didn’t believe her to say that blew my fucking mind. I’m very happy to hear that even though not guilty NhL not allowing players to come back.
Sounds to me like another case of women acting like victims after acting like complete whores. We've seen it all during the me too days. Funny how fake accusations never lead to anything meanwhile men's lives are destroyed and we move on like nothing happened.
