I take it that people who think that the Pens should retain anything less than $5m on Karlsson is just not understanding the numbers. Cap space is meaningless to the Pens and the majority of the cash has already been paid to Karlsson. If the Pens retains $5m of Karlsson the Pens cap space would go up to $18m because they got rid of a $10m cap hit by retaining $5m. The Pens could even take a $5m contract back and still have $13m in cap space. Trading Karlsson is about getting the right asset back. Thank God Dubas is smarter than podcasters.
BTW. The Pens should consider taking on all of Carey Prices $10.5M cap hit after he is paid the bonus Sept 1. They should package a couple of contracts to help with only having 22 contract spots for active players. The Pens should expect significant assets in return. If the Pens trade Karlsson, retain $5, Rust, and Rakell. They would have as much as $28M in cap space plus it they dump to players on the trade. After those moves, including Price, they would still have almost $20m in cap space.

Rust is an original Penguin, so his worth is so much more tban stats, so I can't see him going anywhere! Rakell and Karlsson will be the ones who may be traded. Rakell can go to the front of the net, crazy forechecker, and can score in multiple ways. Karlsson is so needed by Carolina it's crazy. They dont have a great puck moving offenseman who can get the puck to the forwards from behind their net. That was so clear against Florida. With their signings this off-season to add Karlsson is their best shot for the next 2-3 years to knock Florida off.
Carolina has their defense, why would they go after Karlsson.
