Italo Ferreira vs Matthew McGillivray | Corona Cero Open J-Bay 2025 – Elimination Round
Now he’s in the elimination round. So maybe he actually prefers a little more of a peaceful place and likes to build up with the adrenaline more naturally. It’s not normal to jump out of planes. Is it Rosie? I I wonder if this guy even feels adrenaline anymore. He’s just like such a cool character. Just a little late decision to check out this wave. Matty’s in the non-priority heat with Italo Ferrer. So he knows he’s got his hands full. So many great memories on tour, but this man’s a world champ and a finalist at Jeff Bay. Starting to tag a couple of sections. Late climb, but was it with you um at um Well, we’ll get back to that after. But this this wave itself, it was funny cuz It got way down the point. It was the same wave that Manny McKilliver couldn’t make it around, but he was just behind us. Regroup like you mentioned, and keeps himself composed because it’s not easy to do that. Italo getting one of those waves at some part of it. Al also kind of a wave that was like a little bit underneath. So, oh, Mame Gilliver trying to pull the the priority and just couldn’t get there. It’s one of those ones that just went underneath him. So, harder than it looks to surf today. And I think from what we were expecting with the conditions, it’s been a little bit tricky today. Rolling into this one, knifing that section. and local boy Matty McGillifrey will step off. Scary one and just showed that he was much more than a point break specialist. We’ll watch Matty’s again, Jesse. Yeah, I think Matty’s just trying to find like those low rotors without priority that lines up pretty nicely and he can get a backup. It’s a bummer, but you just got to suck it up and have to get back on the grind because that’s your only option. Happened a couple of times with me this past year. Go third at pipe and then falling off as well. Didn’t expect that. As we look at Italo loading up, powerful snap to float into a little arc in the pocket, keeping his line strong on that Timmy Patterson and going crazy to this classic venue. We’ll start with Italo Ferrer on this one, Rosie. Yeah, Italo starting to get that aggressive approach. Mediumsiz wave. He founds that connection right there. So much speed in his surfing though. Loads up. Staying low. Oh. Matty McIll wrapping on that Channel Island surfboard reaching over a meaty section, but Matty lets go of it. Some pretty whackable lips as well for the likes of McGilly in action here. Trying to make up a bit of ground and he does that with his first hit. kind of flings his board up there and then a ton of velocity. Arrives late, does it well and that’ll feel good. Didn’t show much of himself in his opening round. He’s got a little bit of work to do. Taking on Cole Hman. This is a repay of McGill Frey. Yeah, a lot of energy on this one from Matt. You can tell that he really wants it. Got to that last section super late, but even these overlapping heats, they feel even more high intensity because everyone is catching so many waves. It driving on the back hands. He’s had really good rhythm and good read on. Pretty powerful section. So much spring in those legs and he’ll just glide with no pumps at all. It looks really nice as he connects here effortlessly. Nice sting off the top and then look at this bowled out section. A great hit for him. And a little look back as well. He’s feeling it. We are too. That’s going to be a number. always putting his best foot forward, but I love seeing him on these JB walls. I mean, just how technically good his bottom turns are. His entire fin just streaking out of the water here. So much speed carried from start to finish there. Floats up and over this section. Carries that energy and speed round through that next turn and he’s just so lively when he serves. It looks like he’s about to bounce out of the water off every turn. So, he loves to my old man to Shane a little bit. uh got some insight into um what I was looking for. U I was trying to actually kind of find out what what scores we we were going to get. Was he going to get the jump on my first wave or was I um and turns out they were kind of very similar. It’s just to give them a lot of uh I don’t know, so to speak, and uh yeah, have them go all the way and and and kind of follow their dreams and do the best they can. You can see him he kind of skips through that bottom turn, but here’s a replay of Manny McGillary. Yeah, I mean he knows this wave so well for Matty. And you can see just the patience between all of his turns. He’s not rushing anything. Just three beautiful turns. Hit the close out section. Meanwhile, Italo drifts out that tail. Everything has a little bit extra in for him at the moment. Just seems to have certainly an extra gig. And then here’s the contrast, right? So you get like a little more skippy with Ito Ferrero. Not even going all the way to the bottom. Triple bottom turn there just for the float, the light footed, but it’s just it’s energetic, but it’s just a different style of surfing that Ferrer brings. 0% luck is was his caption of it. And I just think that really sums up how hard Ria works and how much first priority with Maddie in the priority heat. That’s why Italo had to give way to the green jersey of the local McGillifrey. Bit of work to do in this heat at the moment. hasn’t really selected ways that have opened up for him and a little bit of recurring theme on this one so far. Good enough to get the hit into a crumbly lip, but not loads of clean water. And you can just see him. I mean, it’s definitely not where we’re used to seeing it. But I feel like, you know, even though Maddie not getting that wild card run he was really looking for Italo probably stoked that he didn’t get pinched by another wild card this year. That Aussie treble every single competition he got knocked out by a wild card. So, Italo now getting the one

Destruiu!
Italo o título mundial é nosso 🎉
