San Jose Sharks Trade for Ryan Reaves and Sign Jeff Skinner
[Music] Dominate, dominate, dominate, dominate, dominate. I did not go on to play. I came to dominate. Uh, hey, what’s going on, Tyler? Uh, welcome to another show. And, um, how do you feel about Joe Thornton officially being on the San Jose Sharks, um, staff? Well, we all knew that it was going to happen. and it was just a matter of when it would be officially announced. So, it’s really great to see it to officially announce, but this isn’t anything new to him. We saw him during the offseason. We saw him at the development camp. He was already playing this role. This role was already perfectly made for him and I think it’s a great addition. We’re getting uh a lot of the Peak Sharks players back in the front office and I think that’s something that will bring the culture back to what it was like when the Sharks were consistently making the playoffs. I think you nailed it on the head there when you said the word culture. Um for me, the biggest delight out of this news is a it’s official, right? It’s officially official. Um as you mentioned, you know, Joe Thornton’s been a part of this organization um unofficially for a while now. um as as a matter of fact, I believe I believe he’s been in and out of the um you know, the locker room since like when Eric Carlson used to be on the roster if I’m not mistaken. So, it’s nice to see that he’s officially on board as the player development coach and hockey operations advisor. And um just to double down what you said, Tyler, as far as culture goes, um I think it’s just it makes the franchise have just more value, more prestige. I mean, that’s just invaluable experience. I mean, and and let me just backtrack here. What a year for Thornton it’s been, you know, having raised his jersey number to the Raptors and then having um been elected to be the class of the um 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame and now here, you know, officially part of the Sharks operation. Um so you know just amazing value, amazing um amazing um assets, amazing presence, amazing person to have uh for this uh future lineup of stars that my career and the sounds Sharks have been acquiring over the last couple seasons. All right. Um so moving moving on speaking of um you know acquiring Sharks players here. So let’s talk about some of the the newest members here. Tyler, first and foremost, um we’re going to go with the the goalending, the newest goalender, and that’s uh Jacob Shakarak. I believe I said that correctly. Pardon me if I mispronounced it. How do you feel about the newest U goalender here in San Jose? Uh I think it’s a great addition. Obviously, uh with Ascarov planning to be called up full-time to be in the NHL, clearly we needed a number one starter for the Barracuda, and I think he’s a good role in that. And he reminds me of Romangh and one of those Magnus Crono where if let’s say for some reason both of our NHL goalies can’t play, he can he can uh step up, play when needed, and then just go back down and continue being the starter for the Cudas. So, I think it’s a great addition to the Reef. Absolutely. um his AHL experience last season, I believe he had 22 regular uh AHL games with Bridgeport and um he had two NHL games as a member of the New York Islanders last season and um you know 25-year-old attendee as you said is more than likely going to be going straight to the reef as will be uh the undisputed in my opinion starting goalender you know uh starting this season. So, moving on. That was a pretty uh simple one, right? To assess just some more goalender depth for our uh development program. You have Ryan Reeves. Now, that’s probably the most shocking trade um this week, I think, in Sharks territory and probably in NHL was Henry Thun being sent over in exchange for Ryan Reeves. Um your reaction to that. Okay, so let me because I’ve seen a lot of Sharks fans uh voice their opinions. Let me let me try to put my perspective on it. See if that could settle down the flame of sorts. But Ryan Reeves obviously as Sharks fans uh especially during the playoff era like 2019. Uh obviously there was that rivalry. It was really fun for television. It was really fun to watch. But he remind he’s one of those players where I’ve talked to multiple Sharks fans uh where one of those players where disregarding all that he’s one of those players you will like on your team. So, I mean, obviously, he’s not on another team anymore. We don’t have to like uh dislike him. Now he’s on our team. He provides extra security for the young players like Celebrinia Smith. And that’s what you want. You remember what Mike Greer said when he first got hired. He wants the San Jose Sharks to be a tougher team to play against. Uh, you know, last season we got Goodro tried to get a little bit extra beef on our deaf lines, but now we got the toughest player in the NHL. And I’m not making that up. You could look it up on Google right now. Toughest player in the NHL right now. Guarantee Ryan Reeves is going to be up there. I am a little disheartened that we had to trade Henry Thun. Um, but you know, it’s just one of those where he was the odd man out. Uh, so that makes sense. But if you’re just looking at it value-wise, to me that part doesn’t equate to the same value. But it’s just that’s one of those positional needs. We need a player to protect the young guys. And that is something that Ryan Reeves will provide. And that is something uh that I think is more valuable than a defenseman that’ll be scratched for a lot of games or being sent down to the minor leagues. You know, some people might be scratching their head, but to me, I think um what you said, Tyler being tougher to play against, that’s going to be probably one of the most immediate impacts we’ll see with with our bottom six with Ryan Reeves in the mix. And then um the second thing that I would say is, you know, he has that grit, that leadership, and he’s kind of probably one of the last of his kind, like like you said, one of the tough not just the toughest uh forward in the National Hockey League, but perhaps the last true enforcer in the NHL. So, I’m excited to have him. Obviously, as a Sharks fan, I remember him kind of um having his way with the likes of, you know, Evander Kane or Curtis Gabriel, but you know, that’s all in the past now. Um I’m more or less excited the fact that he most most likely is going to be in the opening night roster. And guess who’s going to be at the tank opening night? Vegas Golden Knights. So, that’s going to be fun to see him uh you know, lace it up against his former squad. All right. Um moving forward here, Jeff Skinner. Jeff Skinner is officially a San Jose Shark, 33 year old. Um, got a little taste of the playoffs last year with the Oilers. Uh, but for the most part, he was a healthy scratch during the postseason. Your thoughts on acquiring a Jeff Skinner? Um, I actually really like this signing. He can provide some offense. It was not that long ago where he was uh I believe like a point per game player during uh his time in Buffalo. Obviously that resulted in him on that really good paycheck. Uh but a really good player that I like. He’s just one of those players that he can add that veteran presence and it let’s say he does bounce back to that point per game type of production. Well, that just works out better for us. Uh it’s only a one-year deal. So if it doesn’t then, you know, we don’t have to worry about that. But it’s it’s good leadership, good experience, and it’s it’s one of those where there can be a high reward if it works out well, which I think it will. All right, last but not least here, Jack Thompson. So Jack Thompson was resigned by the San Jose Sharks. I mean, obviously, this is going to be another player that’s going to primarily contribute to the San Jose Barracuda. Your thoughts on Jack Thompson remaining in San Jose? Uh, great add not addition, but it’s it’s good to keep that because, uh, we talked about Ascro being called up. Now, it looks likely either Muka Mullan may be called up to the NHL fulltime or, uh, as we know Sam Dickensson is in the pipeline, he will probably skip the AHL. So, we still need a true uh top two, top four defenseman on the Cuda, and it’s just uh he’s already had that experience. They went to the playoffs uh last season, so I think it’s just great familiarity for the Bay Area. Thank you for enjoying another episode of Frost Bitten presented by the Hockey Podcast Network.
