i hope and pray that mclellan has worked on the defense over the summer. not even just the play of the defensemen but the forwards playing defense. half the forwards on the team looked lost in our D zone all season long. i hope he has a better penalty kill system too. our 5v5 scoring isnt very good but if we can lock it down defensively i believe we can make the playoffs.

Yeah, they're still not a playoff team. Poor timing, they bottomed out at the wrong time. Bad, horrific lottery luck/getting screwed. Its a crime that they have not received a single lottery pick in this rebuild. I'm sure Chris told Steve to hit the gas too early and now they're stuck in the middle. They're in purgatory. They either need to finally get some lottery luck, bottom out again or one of these draft picks to strike gold as a superstar. Until I see differently, their netminders are still suspect, the defense is awful and they can't score 5v5.

In a word, no. Not yet.
Even on a 10 year rebuild timeline I think the Wings are closing in on a tipping point to fix some of their perpetual problems with 5 on 5 scoring, turnovers, and finding Seider a capable LHD partner. Bringing back more or less the same defensive group after last year's hit and miss at best results makes the Wings look like a bubble team again unless Mclellan can work some magic to get more out of them or a prospect breaks into the roster on par with Edvinsson's impact.

Building a single "elite" NHL hockey player in the aggregate isn't working. It kind of worked for St Louis in the season they won the Cup because the entire roster was 6'7" 400lbs and played MurderPuck. This team's forward group is almost an entire roster of replacement-level Alex DeBrincats. The defense is also undersized and underskilled. Cossa is already a borderline headcase and barreling towards a reclamation project for someone interested in a trade. Can't wait to break the drought only to finally start The Rebuild.
I only have one thing to say – there’s no way Holl is on the line. Gus is better than Holl.
Part of the reason Talbot struggled is our third pair (Gus/Holl) were so very bad and bad together that it absolutely made our goalies lives much worse. The blue line regression between 23-24 and 24-25 was notable.

Heres the key for Detroit to make the playoffs. Dont collapse March. They'd of been in the last two seasons if they didn't have their worst skids of the seasons every march. 2 1/2 games away this past season because they collapse in March. season before , don't get in on just a tie breaker because again they cant get their ish together in March.

As a wings fan since the 90s, I’ve obviously loved Yzerman as a player but not so much as a GM the past couple seasons. I did however love the Gibson trade and some of these signings aren’t gonna move the needle much but a little bit is better than nothing. He did the best he could this offseason so far with the options he had..which weren’t much since unfortunately it seems no one wants to play here anymore. And it makes sense, the last several seasons they have blown it once the calendar turns March. So I say all this to say, yes they can make it if Gibson stays healthy and the young core continues to improve. I lean with my head and my heart that this season they finally get in and make several big moves at the trade deadline and finally end the big losing streaks in March and April! Do they win a series? I doubt it, probably out in 6 first round but that would still save Yzermans job. He has to show this team can get in, then the next season they may win a round then the season after that, finally contend. We shall see. Biased wings fan out.
Not to beat up on the red wings a great organization but there's other teams that have been suffering as well Minnesota, Calgary, Columbus ,etc. Some people say they deserve better I get it but they were in back-to-back cups 14 years ago im guessing??? Look at Buffalo for goodness sakes talk about a team that's in desperate need of a playoff run

If you look and compare yzerman 1.0 Tampa bay with 2.0 Detroit we are at year 2015… vassileski getting feet wet Hedmon just getting comfortable, kucherov and rest of team less than ppg, no point…. Yet they made it to Stanley cup finals losing to Chicago. A lot has to happen this year if redwings are on a similar trajectory… Cossa emerges, Gibson stands on his head like Ben bishop did, Seider takes next step, Raymond has not reached his ceiling… kasper gets 65 points as 2c … we have wingers coming up Lombardi being one overlooked.
This year? Next year? Wings are close internal growth is key, and then trade those who don’t pan out… the wings are very deep with two way forwards defense weak for 1 more year… the path to nhl regular for defense is the longest, centers is the second longest. Wingers come up quickly… this year and last year yzerman drafted wingers mainly… lots of competition in the system and completion allows the best to excel
I am still hoping we can see Holl and Chiarot off the roster this year. Most goals occur while they're on the ice and their shortcomings are demoralizing.
Detroit lacks toughness. They have some guys with size but play smaller. Rasmussen is useless for his size. He should me moved. The team has no identity or chemistry. This shows in the inconsistent play and the fact not many players believe in the Yzerplan and won't choose Detroit for a destination to play. Detroit has had great draft success for losing place year after year but poor management beyond the drafting. Not much to move the needle for 2025-26 other organizations are doing more and Detroit will lag further.

Tough call if the wings actually break through this year, with the depth of the east. One thing I sure am getting tired of no playoffs after making it 25 years straight. I think if the wings miss the playoffs you have to consider firing yzerman. Great video
We need a guy like Berggren to show up, we need some sustained offense from our rookies if we are gonna do it. I think we’re exactly where we were at two years ago, just barely on the cusp.

As a wings fan, I don’t think so. The teams in their division have all made moves to make them better. The only teams I think that may be worse are Buffalo and Boston.
I think a big thing that went unmentioned was our coach, we were much better after Todd came in. Hopefully a full year and more development from our young guys push us over that line
The defense is terrible, after Seider and Edvinsson. They won't make the playoffs with this defense.

If they can hang around till the trade deadline and remain relevant it would be a great time to a a couple of prominent pieces to put them over the hump. If not we are need to continue to let the youth mature and get another good prospect.

As I did last season, I pondered whether I was going to watch the Pistons or the Wings. The Pistons won. Same this year. My focus will be on the Pistons. As for the NHL, it's season five watching the Panthers.
We ended the playoff drought but the cup window is going to depend on some trades or an absolute banger of a late draft pick.
