The Toronto Maple Leafs acquire a franchise player and everyone hates it (Seasons of Sundin)

After two consecutive trips to the Western Conference Final, the rapidly aging Toronto Maple Leafs need to make a swing, even if it means trading the most popular player in franchise history, Wendel Clark.

Special thanks to all hockey archivists here on YouTube but especially @greendayrock for archiving of tons of Leafs highlights from this era.

  1. 19:43 The more stories I hear about officiating, the more I think they should all take Jim Schoenfeld's advice and have another donut…

(For the record, I wrote the above before seeing Don Koharski in the newspaper snippet at 23:26.)

  2. Still got my fingers crossed for the blackhawks dynasty video like the amazing pens vid you did.🖤🤞

  3. One of the blurst deals in Leafs history. It's very rare where you catch a star when the price is someone as beloved as Wendel, and the only one I can really think of in recent pro sports is the Pittsburgh Pirates giving Andrew McCutchen to San Francisco in return for Bryan Reynolds, but that's not even close to the general impact that Mats for Wendel had.

  4. If I had a nickel for every time the Leafs acquired a transcendent Swedish talent in an era where rugged Canadian players were en vogue, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s interesting considering it’s happened twice.

  5. Crazy that Fletcher pulled off the two best trades in franchise history in such a short time. Now if only he didn't shoot himself in the foot undoing this one…

  6. Cherry is such a xenophobic boomer. I know Wendell was a tough, physical power forward but even if he didn't know that Sundin was going to become the greatest player in Leafs history, he should have known that Mats was younger, healthier, and more skilled. But noooo all Grapes knew was "Swede bad, Canadian good" 🙄

  7. He had 46 goals and 10 in the playoff and this guy describes him as a 30ish goal scorer (because of a chronic back injury) who could not lead his team in the playoffs. We did not get to the playoffs until we traded for Wendel again and got Doug Gilmour to lead us. Sundin didn't lead us anywhere but this video needed to be made right?

  8. Sundin is the greatest Maple Leaf of all time. The fact that Cherry didn't like him, he wasn't from an anglo-Canadian small town, he didn't drop the gloves regularly and he came across as distinguished has and will cause him to never be really appreciated in the Toronto market.

  9. the real story that you should talk about is the price difference for tickets between now and then, it's criminal.

  10. lol, I will never get over Cherry’s outward xenophobic drivel that some continue to excuse and praise. Absolute JOKE of a coach and person that dressed like a complete clown.

  11. Oh shit as a leafs fan I’m hyped to see this video. This was before my time so it’s nice to hear the little details

  12. Based on what happened with your previous series about the Oilers, this means the Leafs are destined to make back to back Cup finals and lose them in heartbreaking fashion.

We’re gonna make the finals!!! 🥳🥳🥳
