How FILIP ZADINA Went From A 40-Goal Scorer To A HUGE RED WINGS BUST
You know what? I understand that there can be some mixed messaging with the way we are making our videos, but I wanted to do a little bit of a blast of the past. This is a series that we did 5 years ago. It was the height of COVID and I, as a Vancouver Kucks fan, wanted to talk about some prospects in Vancouver Conucks lore from yester year that didn’t pan out. guys who in my Kucks fandom I actually thought were going to be pretty good but who inevitably were not and who inevitably disappointed not just me but tons and tons and tons of other fans around the world. This what could have been series was very short-lived, but today we are going to add to it because I thought today was a really great opportunity to go over a guy in the Detroit Red Wings organization that was supposed to be all that, who was supposed to be a 40goal guy, a player who exhibited so much potential, but who ultimately demonstrated none of Let’s head over to the news that was posted about on the Detroit Redwing subreddit earlier this week. It was posted on casports.yahoo.com and it talks about how former Detroit Red Wings forward Philip Zadina has signed a multi-year extension in Switzerland. Swiss club HC Davos has signed Philip Zadena to a three-year contract extension. The forward scored 21 goals, 34 points in 43 games with the team last season. Now, for the most part, this piece of news isn’t really significant enough to warrant its own video. Oh, Philip Zadena signed a multi-year extension with Davos Ocean in the Swiss League. That is great, right? We got to make a video about that. No, it’s not really that big of a deal, especially to fans of the Detroit Red Wings in 2025. But I thought this was a great opportunity to dive into what should have been, what could have been, and what a lot of Wings fans thought they were getting with Philip Zadena when the Red Wings selected him sixth overall in the 2018 draft. But before we dive into all of that, we have to get into the story, the narrative. Philip Zadena. Right now, he’s 25 years old, 6′ 196, a left-handed winger whose birth date is a little bit earlier into the 2018 draft class. He was one of the older guys in that selection of players with a November 99 birth date, but as a result, Philip Zadena was actually able to play in the QMJHL in his draft eligible season. In this season, he was particularly noted as one of the best goal scorers. Philip Zadina was shot out of a cannon in North America in his first season here. He had 44 goals in 57 games played and 38 assists for 82 points and was over a point per game in the playoffs. The thing is about Philip Zadena that really stood out for him and his development was that world junior stint for Czecha. In seven games played, he had seven goals, one assist for eight total points on the tournament, which to my recollection, did that lead the tournament in goals that year? Uh, no. He was second behind Kefir Bellows of Team USA. But Philip Zadena as a draft eligible player scored more goals than players who had already been drafted like Leash Anderson for the Rangers, Ilas Person for the Vancouver Conucks, Casey Middlestead was outgo by Philip Zadina and as a result you had conversations back in the December January period of that 1718 year asking whether or not Philip Zadena could even go as high as second overall. There was sort of this bubbling narrative that Andre Fetchnikov could potentially challenge Raasmus Dalene for going number one, but then at the World Juniors, Philip Zadina challenging for number two all of a sudden became a big deal. Scouts, analysts, and fans saw the level as to which Zadena was putting goals in, and it really catapulted him up to the top of the draft rankings. Now, for the most part, he did stay there. If you scroll down and you look at the lists over here, you will see that Philip Zadena was essentially ranked top three by most outlets here. Future Considerations had him at number three. McKeen’s at number three. Mackenzie had him at number four. They had Brady Kachchuck at number three. And then NHL Central Scouting had Zadena ranked as the third overall North American skater. If we head over to the actual list here, you can see that NHL Central Scouting had Fetchnikovka Chuck Sadena as the one 123 in North America. And in Europe, they had Dollian number one. And Dollian was going to go number one. So you could kind of just shift everybody in North America down one spot and you would have the draft order. Quinn Hughes at number six, by the way. Look at how that ended up turning out. But nevertheless, Philip Zadena was so highly touted in that 2018 draft season that a lot of folks started to bubble around the time of the draft just debating where it was that Zadena was going to go. And I remember around the draft period itself, we started seeing sort of narratives bubbling up asking whether or not Zadena would drop. We made this video seven years ago, Philip Sadena dropping to the Canucks at seventh overall and ultimately the conclusion was, oh yeah, it’s really going to depend on Montreal because the Habs have the third overall pick. They wanted a center. This was sort of the narrative back then. Are the Habs going to take Zadina, Cotammy, or Hughes? We all know and we all remember what happened afterwards. Yeah, that’s right. Montreal ended up taking Kanye with the third overall pick which started this entire spiraling process of Barrett Hayden going fifth overall to Arizona and Brady Kachchuck going fourth to Ottawa after this top five. Philip Zadena was still available and I remember as a Vancouver Conucks fan I was super excited because I was like yeah okay if the Red Wings go Quinn Hughes because he’s a Michigan guy then Vancouver will get Zadena. But the Red Wings ended up taking the check with the sixth overall pick and Quinn was available for the taking in Vancouver, seventh overall. He is now the best defenseman the Vancouver Conucks have ever had. Thank you very much, Ken Holland. Now, this is the unfortunate part of Philip Sadena’s progression post 2018 draft because we all kind of recognize that the skills that he had that made him such a lethal goal scorer at lower levels of play were never able to translate into the National Hockey League as well as we would have thought. He’s a smaller guy, not really a big frame, but he has this skill element to his game and a goalcoring touch. He could just put the puck in from anywhere. But what happens when he gets to the NHL level and he tries to play that same game and he tries to shoot and score from distance and he tries to find those angles and the puck just doesn’t go. When that happens, Philip Zadena does not live up to that expectation that was placed upon him by most Red Wings fans in the 2018 draft. Zadena maxed out getting 24 points in one Redwing season in 74 games played, 10 goals and 14 assists. Inevitably, it got to a point where Zadina and the Red Wings terminated his contract because Zadena wanted to bet on himself and really try to win his way back into a top National Hockey League role. He ended up getting 23 points and 13 goals in 72 San Jose Sharks games and was a minus 44 in that season, too. But that was about it. Philip Zadena’s time in North America was over. And last year, to be fair, he was good with HC Davos. 34 points and 43 games played, 21 goals. Also was a point per game for Davos in the playoffs. Definitely not a bad showcase for a guy that at one point was seen to having the potential of a 40goal guy in the National Hockey League. To end off this video though, I wanted to go over to the Red Wings subreddit and read some of the thoughts posted by Wings fans. Good for him to find a home he can thrive in. He really struggled in the NHL. He’s one of those prospects that I feel has his development permanently damaged and never recovered. He was too good for the QMJHL when he came over. He wasn’t NHL ready, but he had the confidence to try it. And he also wasn’t happy splitting time in the AHL. Then CO hit and it all went off the rails. Zadena did great everywhere except the National Hockey League. Even now he’s fine in Switzerland, but the NHL game was just too much for him. Hindsight coaching doesn’t mean much. But maybe if those things don’t happen in that way, in that order, he doesn’t have that problem and he makes it. Sucks, but I wish him well in Czecha. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below about the what could have been with Philip Adena. How the Red Wings missed out on a 40goal score whose development path absolutely did not do him any favors and whose willingness to adjust to the NHL game was maybe takenback by his actual ability to do so. Philip Zadena, everybody, is a guy that I still look upon fondly as a top prospect, but I know a lot of other Wings fans don’t share the same feelings. So, let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. I hope you enjoyed this British Ash 999 and bye.

They didn’t miss out on him, he didn’t live up to expectations. He had a chance to light it up and failed. He seemed like a good kid but didn’t have the chops to be an NHL’er. It’s a shame, I was excited when he was drafted.
Did we ever know, the famous woman reaction to the KK draft, what player she wanted MTL to draft? Zadina, Tkachuk or Hughes? Or anyone else.
Just asking in case it was Zadina, because that would not have been good either for MTL. 😂 In any case, I think the world needed that reaction, so drafting Zadina would have robbed us of that epic moment
Man shinkaruk is a name i havent heard in awhile thought he was gonna be a decent forward for van 😅 man was i wrong 😂
At times, it honestly felt like Ken Holland was trying to sabotage the team
yzerman ruined his development 😭
There are too many teams who have a bunch of incompetents as General Managers & coaches.
When you put a high-performance tool in the hands of a incompetent contractor he will usually damage the tool because he refused to read and understand the instructions on how to use the tool for what. Sometimes if you use the tool for the wrong purpose for the wrong job, you wreck the tool forever. That contractor simply throws away the tool he wrecked and continues on his merry way wrecking more tools in the future.
This is what happens in the NHL. A good example is the coach & general manager they had in Montreal in 2020-21 named Dom Ducharme Marc Bergeron.
Under Ducharme, Cole Caufield looked terrible, like he lost his scoring touch, but that all changed immediately under MsL.
Ducharme didn't have the skill to coach a pee wee team & his GM thought that hiring a coach with a losing record that started a mutiny among the players to have him fired was a good idea to sign him up for several more seasons.
Well, we all know how that turned out with both of them being fired but walking away with truck loads of money.
Ken Holland is the greatest GM of all time.
He wasnt mismanaged at all. He came in the NHL with over confidence, and in his last few years, had zero confidence. His final year, i was surprised the rinks kept his shots inside. He had all the skills, but once his confidence was gone, he was done. It reminded me of Tarasenko last year.
Zadina can’t process the game at NHL speed. He was always a second late to the loose puck. A second late on the back check. A second late to make a pass. A second late to the rebound. A second late to shoot which is why he either missed the net by 4 feet or hit the goalie in the chest. That’s why he lit up the Q but was a bust in the NHL.
Bro started reading comments and decided to make a real video
Just another terrible kenny holland draft pick
Lego why….. why ya gotta open deep scars again. The pain! The paiiiiiiiiiin!
