If he signs a team friendly deal under 4M with the cap going up, he would be great even on the 3rd pairing… never forget injuries (specially for Ghule and Reinbacher).. having players that can play top minutes is always a better than not. Matheson plays big minutes against the other teams best players, any defensmen in the league will make mistakes, some fans just focus on that (like NYI fans with Dobson and Oilers fans with Bouchard) yet, they all play around 23+ minutes per game, so the coaches must see something that these fans dont. Plus law of averages are staked against these players.
He is still better than Xhekaj (anyone saying he’s not needs to seriously re-evaluate their hockey knowlege) . His experience would serve the team very well along with Carrier in the next 2-3 years to help the kids grow. You can’t have a blueline with only sub 25 yo players. We lost “daddy” Savard, and players need to have some experienced players to help them.
Imagine having access to these players in the next 2-3 years:
Dobson – Ghule
Reinbacher – Hutson
Carrier – Matheson
Xhekaj – and any other fringe up and coming players in case of injuries
Dont get me wrong I do like Xhekaj, but he needs to be more calculated in his aggression and better in his zone, for the little ice time he had facing non top lines from the other teams vs Matheson, he was a huge liability . If he improves his defensive play and stays out the box, he could get decent minutes at some point.
