  1. While I agree on the bottom 6 and likely 4th line center, I can't help but think he is one of those guys that needs the right system for him. The right line up chemistry. Just look at his last year in the Q….. what happened there? That's the player we want, but not likely the one we will see.

  2. He's had 4 different coaches in 5 years and with the lack of playing time, maybe he just couldn't get going. MSL has a way of redefining a player's role and hopefully the system suits Velano style. Plus aside from Detroit, his previous teams were lower tier. Being a hometown boy, if that doesn't get him jacked, nothing will

  3. I like it. I don't want to mortgage the farm right now, wait for the right deal at the deadline or even next year.

  4. Could end up being a good signing for a young guy who wants to prove he belongs and with the young group i see it as a great fit, go joe go

  5. I took notice of Veleno when he was in Detroit. He looked like he had potential. I hope the hometown boy makes good.

  6. Hey guys I’m the kid that was in the Zamboni in junkies trip to Montreal vid a year or two ago and that clip of veleno skating in the Detroit practice rink even though I’m a big Habs fan I played for a hockey team that was in Detroit and I got to skate on that ice just wanted to say and great vid junkie!

  7. I don't see Joe making the team. My guess, he will play in Laval and be brought up to the Habs only if needed. Priced well, he is insurance for flexibility and depth.

  8. in the grand picture, its super smart. you plug a hole in the center where you lost an overpaid Dvo. give him a 900k deal which is peanuts. Gives him a chance to play in his hometown., and also gives the younger talent another year to develop. Super objective move by kent. Low risk deal. Don't wanna say it, but I'm going to.. This could be another Paul Byron type of move. Only time will tell!

  9. A pretty risk free signing that won't hurt us and might be a pleasant surprise ! As always buddy ; enjoyed the video and that Newfoundland humor ! GHG

  10. Great signing. Gives management and coaching options. This guy with Andy and Gally or Bolduc should be fun to see…

  11. Only 25 years old, drafted 30th overall, born in Montreal, and put up 7 points in just 18 games with Chicago last year—all at a bargain price. I’m excited!

  12. I think if he actually plays a meaningful role it's a bad signing. I feel Beck or Kapanen would be much better suited for this team than Veleno, I honestly don't like the signing what so ever.

  13. It’s a legit Montreal story as you tell it.
Tony Marinaro started his career as a kid of 14, a constant call-in character in the old Team 990. If a guy hangs out enough and really has the skills, Montreal is down with that.

  14. Personally, I love it. Way back when, I wanted the Habs to trade their 3rd overall for the Islanders two 1st's with the hopes that they would snag Dobson and Veleno. Instead they drafted Kotkneimi…. Lol but low and behold, in less then one months time, HUGO and Co. just brought both into the fold. I feel like this is a pair of moves made just for me 😅

  15. As a Saint Johnner I remember him captaining our Sea Dogs to the Presidents Trophy and a spot in the Memorial Cup. Yeah his NHL career is on the verge of fizzling out but I'm interested in seeing what this kid can do back in his hometown and with a better team behind him.

  16. A bit worse than Dvorak overall…for 900K/1year (Dvo got 5.4 Millions SOMEHOW)…literally 0 risk there if things don't work out (Just put him on waivers and forget about it), blows my mind how people are making this a bigger deal than it is

  17. People in the comment section are comparing Veleno to Dvorak a little bit too much. Instead, the real replacement for Dvorak is Jake Evans who will be our 3C with all the defensive assignments that Dvo had last year. Only downside is Dvo was still way better in faceoffs than Evans is right now but Evans will be on our top penalty killing unit and is quite responsible defensively 5v5 at half the price Dvo is right now with Phily.

Veleno on the other hand will be our 4C tasked to go shake the other team deep in their zone and with his skating abilities will be a good asset for a very cheap price. Either he takes off next season and we can keep him (and maybe he develops to be our next Jake Evans) or we bring Florian in at some point to take his place and we let Veleno go. A cheap bet with little to no downside and possible nice upside cuz he is still a 1st round pick potential talent. I trust in MSL and the team to make something positive out of this.

  18. I like this pick up

Not for 2C but a great bottom 9 depth , versatile Fwd, speed, size, skill, snarl

The kid will want to show well in front of family in friends.

St Louis can “Fix You” Veleno

  19. Team got bigger, grittier and more skilled, gave up PK but it will give an opportunity to others to rise to occasion

  20. Eh remember when Phillip Danault was traded to the Montreal Canadiens by the Chicago Blackhawks on February 26, 2016. The Canadiens sent forwards Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann to Chicago in exchange for Danault and a second-round pick in the 2018 NHL entry draft. He seemed to figure it out alright.

  21. If he turns out to be a strong two way 3c and gets better year after year? That’s a huge win right there.

We can safely say Dach has fallen from the opposite direction and I hope he has better luck.

  22. Good depth player…right age, good size, and if he can score 10-15 goals, learn to kill penalties, and play good D, it’s well worth the dart.
