Breaking news, indeed–So, Tavares decides to stay with an long term extension–this is good news for the Leafs , especiailly with Marner's impending departure. They are getting good value on this contract extension, IMHO.
What a mistake by removing the C from JT he had my respect but going forward it's stronger than ever
all he is at this point is a trade piece at the deadline ! some teams like to get players at the deadline with term on their contracts vs e rentals on an expiring deal !

Heres the way the contract works:
Tavares contract:
Year 1, $1M base salary, $4.5M signing bonus
Year 2, $1M base salary, $4M signing bonus
Year 3, $3.7M salary salary
Year 4, $1.8M base salary
Plus $2M signing bonus deferred payment payable 5 years after the end of the contract.
The deferred payment part lowers the cap hit from $4.5M to $4.38M
Full NMC in Years 1-2
Modified NTC, 5-team list, in Years 3-4
I wonder how much he would have gotten as a 2C on a good team on the open market? People are saying 8mil but I think it was probably more like 5.5-6 for 2-3 years
