2006-11-14 14:15:00 PST SAN JOSE — The Oakland Athletics will move to Fremont, team officials confirmed today in announcing an agreement to buy a 143-acre site for a stadium in the East Bay city.
What the team will be called remains to be seen. But the “state-of-the-art baseball-only stadium” will be christened Cisco Field as part of a 30-year naming rights agreement, Oakland A’s managing partner Lew Wolff said.

The team has bowed out of plans to build a new stadium and relocate 25 miles south on the Nimitz Freeway, A’s officials said Friday.
“At this time we have decided to no longer pursue the Fremont project,” said A’s spokesman Bob Rose. “We are regrouping and will have discussions internally about our future options.”
The team asked the city of Fremont this week to halt the planning process required to build a stadium. A City Council meeting on the stadium scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled.

Sometimes I think the A's should go back to Philadelphia and start all over.
The late Colin Powell remarked on one of his life rules at the end of his autobiography: Be careful of what you ask for. You just may get it. Sure, those who opposed the A’s move to Fremont at the time may have thought they were keeping the A’s “forever” in the Bay Area, but they ended up losing to Sac Town for now.
I also recall some hullabaloo when the Braves said they were leaving the city of Atlanta to build a ball park in nearby Cobb County. Well, the ball park got done, and at least they are still in the Atlanta metro area.
People also have to take into account what they might lose as well as what they might gain when making decisions.
As a (former) San Jose-based A's fan Fremont would've been the best of both world's: staying in Alameda County AND being close to all the Silicon Valley corporate support. Like "The Battery" for the Altanta Braves in Cobb County, Pac Commons/Fremont would've been awesome for the A's and fans. AND NOW THEY'RE GONE FOREVER!…
Politics and inability to agree on both financing and final architect plans ruined the A's move to Fremont. Fun fact; John Fisher was secondary owner at this time.
Moral of this story: Don’t believe all the PR hype you hear.
I used to know a lot of people in both San Jose and Fremont. Either one of these cities would have been amazing
Didn’t the A’s give up their rights to San Jose in the 80s in attempt to keep the Giants in the Bay Area when they were still trying to leave Candlestick?
My grandmother cursed the A's for leaving Phila. Just might be something to it at this point.
Honestly, I think Fremont would've been a better choice than San Jose. More convenient, as they already had access via BART. Going to San Jose would've been very roundabout. They would've eventually given in if the A's moved to Fremont. Not so sure about San Jose.
