Could Toronto Maple Leafs make trade pitch for Bryan Rust? Re-examining the ‘DNA’ narrative

Could the Toronto Maple Leafs take a page out of the Toronto Blue Jays’ playbook? Mike DiStefano and Dave Morassutti dissect the Maple Leafs’ offseason strategy, questioning how to change team DNA without major roster overhauls. They provide their takeaways from Matias Maccelli’s media availability with reporters. Mike and Dave wonder if a trade is in the works for the team and wonder if Bryan Rust could be a worthwhile trade target. To end the show, the hosts discuss Gavin McKenna planning to head to the NCAA and the tough situation the CHL find themselves in.

  1. You guys are insane to trade Easton Cowan. You only trade a top prospect when you're trying to win a cup. If they couldn't do it with Marner how can think that Bryan Rust is going to bring you the Stanley Cup home?

  2. Trading Cowan now is a dumb idea. Let him play a few seasons. Let's see what he is. Then, when his RFA deal comes up, you can trade him for a superstar level talent, not just a top six forward. Look at what Dallas did. They turned Stankoven into Rantanen. Cowan is of a similar size and skill set. I think he'll be fine on the third line. Let him dominate weaker competition. And if a team offers an all star forward in his prime, that's when you make the deal. Not now.

  3. I love the podcast but that trade proposal for Rust is insane. Rust is 33 and coming off his best season with 65 points, you really think he’s going to continue that level going forward?

  4. This group needs a jolt. You seen what a jolt last off season did to the defence and goaltending.
I think the addition of Mac, Pezz and Roy is a good start but I also wanna see Cowan make this team. I think Cowan skill and attitude is exactly what this team needs and can help fill the hole left by Marner. You don’t want to fill the hole left by Marner with one player, you wanna fill it with 2-3 players. I strongly believe Cowan, Maccelli, Roy and internal improvement from guys like McMann, Robertson, Domi and even Knies with more ice time and opportunities can fill the hole left by Marner while also making this team deeper and way better.

  5. They already have a winger to play with Matthews it is MAX DOMI we have seen it we know it works it was MITCH MARNER needing to play on that first line because he is jealous of Matthews getting the spotlight that killed the Matthews DOMI pairing now the Drama Queen is gone and Domi needs to step up or mb find another team

  6. Stop talking about moving Easton Cowan for 30+ year-old forwards. Insane.

The Leafs aren't going away in 2 or 3 years.

  7. Keep domi. Domi stays for life. He's part of the DNA we need on the team. Getting rid of him is a big mistake. I like Cowen but he's small. Trade Cowen and someone else.

  8. I don’t see why Cowen can’t both be impactful as a bottom sixer and also develop into a top sixer over the next couple seasons in the NHL instead of dicking around on the Marlies for a year or two.

Let’s play a dozen games and see what shakes out, THEN identify the needs. This team is likely making the playoffs as is, if Mathews is healthy.
F—k, we don’t even know if Mathews is gonna be himself again without a surgery.

I’m in the Don’t Trade Cowen camp! Certainly not before the deadline.

  9. Mathew’s must be 100% because last year he was only at 60% due to an injury he never disclosed. If he’s not 100% nothing will matter.

  10. Trading Cowan proposals are beyond dumb and bad asset management. If you redid the draft he’s about a #4 pick. Do you not understand how difficult it is to get a pick that good? A young player with that much potential? You simply don’t trade those assets for middle of the pack players. For a Rantanen or better makes some sense. Knies is another example. There was a lot of trade Knies proposals. Where is he if a draft was redone now? Could the Leafs trade for another young player with the ceiling of a Knies? They cannot. These players are hard to get. The level of trade proposals I have seen for trading these types of players if often like trading a Ferrari for a golf cart. Only idiots would make that trade. Evaluate your assets properly. Moving on from a Minten is not the same as trading a Cowan or a Knies. Cowan is basically a Marner level replacement (a #4 pick) with some lower offensive potential but other good attributes. He could be the 2C on the team in 2-3 years. On top of everything I just said he is a cheap cost and term controlled asset. You need to draft and keep your best drafted talent unless you win a home-run trade.

  11. You CANNOT trade Cowan especially if it’s just for Rust AND we’re sweetening the pot? Cowans ceiling is so much higher than Rust! If you’re trading him you need a better return than that!
