If I asked you to give me a number grade for the moves and the work Habs GM, Kent Hughes has managed to pull off, what would that number grade look like?
Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico go over the body of work Kent Hughes has put together since being the GM of the Montreal Canadiens.

The best move Kent Hughes made was hiring MARTIN ST. LOUIS…….💯
If someone told us, in advance we will trade both our 1sts, Heineman & Mailloux and we won't get a C we would be all be shocked shocked.
No management team will ever hit for a hundred but the way they've managed contracts up to now, masterful!
You guys have helped me comprehend the team and the move forward plan throughout the 3-4 years of this rebuild. I’ve enjoyed hockey from an off the ice standpoint more than ever! Everything about this team from the reporters, analysts and Habs management have reignited my love for the team. Long story short, thank you!
At least Hughes and Gorton have a
vision of the team and are constantly making moves to improve.
Also Bergevin made ok trades at the end but never sophisticated trades like Hughes/Gorton make. Bergevin's trades were usually simple one on one simple trades.
I mean look at the Kirby Dach trade that was not a simple trade and I could never see Bergy doing that trade. I am very happy with Hughes/Gorton, very smart, very classy duo.
Klague was a Jeff Gordon move before Kent he was hired
Easy 9.0/10.0 grade. Getting a 1st pairing 25 year old RHDman signed for 8 years without giving up significant assets was a monstrous move. It suddenly gave the team more options like sacrificing MyYou to get a running mate for Demidov and allowing Reinbacher not to be rushed.
It's 2 episodes now Marco mentions 35+ contract for Kuznetsov. He's 33…what am I missing here?
I agree with Marco a B is the grade i would give Hughes.
Man this channel came out of nowhere and it’s my top two now with hockey junkie!
I find it hard to "downgrade" Hughes for not getting the 2C yet, when we dont see what is available.
How many 1C or 2Cs have moved so far this summer?
Great conversation guys, props to Marco for being very realistic about his opinion on the Habs. One thing I would disagree on a great team completion is the goalie. II belive taht we wont have a full complete package until we get a great goalie. Currently, we do not have it.
Hughes best trade and draft pick are 1 and the same: Brett Kulak for a 2nd round pick, which turned out to be LANE HUTSON !!
Management continues to impress, their collective experience has uplifted virtually every aspect of the team. As a team on the build how could they not be seen as one of or the best? Hope is restored for the majority of the rational fan base. Can’t wait to see what this team has on the roster in 2-3 years!
I predict Price’s contract will be traded once his $5 million bonus is paid. Paying $2 million salary for $10.5 million hit is a great deal for a rebuilding team trying to get to the cap floor.
Getting a top six forward – or a second line centre specifically – should not be a demerit on Canadiens management. It’s not a need and the long term goals of the team override any desperate moves to anything. Opportunistic trades or signings are the name of the game and they’ve taken advantage of their opportunities perfectly.
The best thing they’ve done, and the reason why they deserve an A, is being patient and sticking unwaveringly to the team’s vision and plan.
Kuznetsov is 33 and is a mid now. Habs can do better. Much better.
Just don’t fuck it up now…….be calm…take what’s there…
One of the greatest achievements of the Hughes/Gorton team has been making Montreal a place where players actually want to play. Their first major move toward that goal was hiring Martin St-Louis as head coach, followed by smart hockey trades. Players consistently say they love playing for the Habs for a variety of reasons…and there's no doubt that Martin's coaching style has played a huge role in that. Around the league, players are starting to notice that Montreal has a management team that’s not only serious about building a winning culture, but also leading by example with their relentless work ethic, even in the offseason.
Now, if we could just talk Crosby into coming to Montreal, that would be absolutely epic. Maybe we need to convince him that playing for Team Canada isn’t enough—after all, the Stanley Cup hasn’t been won by a Canadian team since 1993.
This episode might demonstrate the best understanding of the Montreal Canadiens by the media rebuild that I’ve seen or heard so far.
Culture. Internal development. Patience. Making Montreal a destination. Contractual responsibility…
I’m reading rumours Habs focus has shifted from Kyrou to Mctavish! Marco have you heard any rumours on this?
Marco is right, that Monahan play was legendary!
I would say that Utah might have had a perfect off season. Peterka and the 4th overall pick (winning the lottery). They are going to be a handful very soon.
Stop calling them steals and start calling them team friendly. 😅
The worst Bergevin did was to shut the door to habs vétérans and not let them talk with the players
It wont be easy to get back in the playoffs!!!GHG!
Upcoming year will determine quite a bit … will Dach and Laine earn a spot ? I hope Laine gets stronger physically and psychologically because he has value and ya want to root for the underdog. But he needs to become a 200 foot player if he can't score 50 goals. Salary
Don't forget to thank Bergevin for drafting Mailloux in the first place.
I thought you guys were about to go through the entire video without mentioning the Sean Monahan trades, which to me were Kent's shrewdest moves. Agree with Marco here. Great episode as always dudes.
I think Kent Hughes has kicked it up a notch! I expect a more systematic Montreal team for 2025-26 season!
Im surprised no mention of St Louis.
hughes needs to get a leader in the clubhouse ( a cory perry type ) because MSL & suzuki hav no leadership skills
I think Kent Hughes is doing a bang up job Because all the other GMs are probably are on holidays he wants to build his team and he's doing a bang-up job because he said that he wants a Winning team! I'll give him about a B. plus .. I'm sure that they will have that 2nd line Center before training camp ! Thanks again! Newfie Boy!
Love watching u guys , Marco is so knowledgeable and doesnt spread stupid rumours . Thx guys for all u do . Go habs Go. I give hughes a B , i think it woulda been nice to keep Armia and Dvo but no not at that price , too bad they moved on .
Florida kept the core but in 3 years from now, these contract extensions will look very bad.
Let's not forget they hired a lot of new staffs to surround this whole mtl organization. They hired winners like Lecavalier to help Hugues, they hired brand new scouting staff and improved it by huge miles , they hired Chantal macabe to be a voice for the team , hired a bunch of ex players who were not drafted or drafted late to help show our kids the good way to prepare to reach the NHL. MTL changed their whole culture and it's amazing to see, Hugues is by far the GM mtl has had for so long.
Islanders had A– 1st pic ect
This isn't a cheap hot-take, I think Dach is going to pleasantly surprise us.
MOST of the moves have been below average and if Bolduc does not make top 6 this would be another bad trade.
I sense MTL might do something really stupid and that is trade next years first pick to make a big trade losing Price's contract. You do NOT trade either of the next two years draft picks no matter what.
I consider i to be VERY lame to infer MTL made that trade becuase they saw Hutson as a late second round pick that pick was pure luck and had nothing to do with Hutson. If Dobson truly did turn down Columbus he is a dummy because Columbus has a pretty good team that should have made the playoffs last year over MTL.
Slafkovsky's contract has NOTHING to do with value he is an actual 3rd line player he is NOT a first line player so we paid 8mil for a third line player that is a BAD contract.
